Broncos give Kodi Nikorima six weeks to prove himself ahead of Jack Bird’s transfer decision

then it would be interesting to know who we are targeting here are the halves (both halfback and 5/8) off contract at season's end according to zero tackle

Luke Brooks, Fa'amanu Brown, Mitch Cornish, Cooper Cronk, Michael Doolan, Jaelen Feeney, Ata Hingano, Ryley Jacks, Shaun Johnson, Luke Kelly, Kyle Laybutt, Mason Lino, Josh McCrone, Anthony Milford, Darren Nicholls, Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, Jordan Rankin, Tyrone Roberts, Jeff Robson, Johnathan Thurston, Gareth Widdop, Blake Ayshford, Jack Bird, Erin Clark, Lachlan Croker, Kieran Foran, Drew Hutchison, Samisoni Langi, Jack Littlejohn, Benji Marshall, Daniel Mortimer, Mitchell Moses, Shaun Nona, Will Pearsall, Josh Reynolds, Nathaniel Roache, Will Smith, John Sutton, Ray Thompson, Chad Townsend.

The bolded are the only ones that i would consider to be an "established half" at NRL level.

of them the only ones i would chase (that haven't already signed) are:

Shaun Johnson
Gareth Widdop
Kieran Foran

note: i have disregarded Cronk (because he will 100% be in Sydney) and Thurston (because he will finish up at the Cowboys)
I wouldn't mind getting Nicholls back

Why would you give up 400k per season to:-
- leave the current premiers
- leave the side that made you
- move houses / increased costs / leave whatever networks you have developed in sydney.
- increased scrutiny that comes from playing for the broncs.

The Wayne Bennet factor is nice, maybe as they were saying on nrl 360 its worth 10% to the right person getting out of a bad situation.

But really, if you want the money go the knights, if you want to stay in a good spot stay where you are.

Unless he has been promised a role in the halves and he is desperate to play there.... it just doesnt make much sense.

Wayne is no mug, he wouldn't be going after bird without a good reason.

It wouldn't to a canberra fan .

no it isn't, him and John Te Reo thought they were awesome and beat the shit out of someone after a booze session.

Just after breaking into the first team.

They self-sabotaged, nothing unfortunate about that.
A bit more to the story than that and it wasn't the crime of the century compared to what some players get up to currently. But you're right, they should've known better and being fringe players, it cost them both their careers.

Breaking: Cronulla has re-negotiated with Jack Bird today. They have upped their offer in a last ditch attempt to keep him. Decision expected tomorrow.

Someone else said Broncos haven't heard anything from him in 2 days . Not overly concerned but bennets strike rate is taking a hit if so.

It's been said a few times. If it results in clubs having to pay more, it's not the worst thing in the world. Every player that doesn't come here because they get offered more somewhere else then it's the same as that club having a reduced cap.

It only comes undone if we are forced to do the same. Milford at $900k is going to be worth it, especially as it seems like every club is looking for their million dollar player. $400k each for a couple of Kiwi reps is pretty good too.

I don't like the idea of $700k+ for a player who is chasing the money, especially if they are either demanding a position they don't fit (at least with us), or will be played in a position that we can fill competently for a fraction of the cost. Is Bird going to be better than a Moga or Opacic in the centres? For sure. But the potential $400 - $500k price difference may mean the difference between us having a Chad Townsend at halfback or a Shaun Johnson.

A bit of both as my neighbour is a well known former Bronco and a lot of my opinions are based on his. But a lot of it is solely based on my viewpoint like the famous one "Moga will never play a first grade game for the Broncos" or "Alex Glenn won't be re-signed". I occasionally eat my words but I am right on this one, Kodi isn't the man for the job and my neighbour agrees with me.

Is your neighbour Gordon Tallis?

How so? We make him a genuine decent offer and the club that he's already at have upped their offer. I daresay we were never really in the race. If he stays with the Sharks....see Papabears post. He nailed it.

Because he has missed a few he has chased recently.

Win win situation, we either get him at our price or we force the sharks to bust the bank to keep him.

I'm not overly fused either way, good player but I don't think he is make or break us for next year.

Yeah. Sign him, great. Don't sign him, even better.

The whole situation still seems really odd to me.

We need a genuine seven for next year despite what Knik serves up for the next few weeks.

I hope you're not poking fun at him. He had more heart than most that play this game. It is very unfortunate the way his career panned out. He is still one of my favorite all time Broncos along with Chris Walker and Dave Taylor.
Not at all, he stuffed up and paid dearly for it. From memory he did well in QCup with the Jets after.

I think it was more bird talking to brisbane than brisbane chasing bird. I dont blame them for listening, and tabling an offer, he's quality, but i doubt they were selling the house for him. If he cost us some of our young forwards, then i would be worried, but it looks like its dust in the wind anyway.
As for bennet missing a few signings, we have a side where the majority have played rep football and those that havent are expected to.
I think we have to understand that big signings can mean losing developing stars, established fan favourites and potential team disruption and chaos. Not to be done lightly and always with an eye to the future of the team not the present.
