Just watched the Broncos Roosters match . Sam Thaiday had another game where he had very little impact coming off the bench. Might be time to really question the notion that he should be an an automatic selection. And I know I will be criticized for saying it , but dam it , he is carrying too much weight,

I don't think you'll be criticized too much.

In fact I don't think anyone would disagree in regards to Thaiday carrying too much weight.

He's on track to be Darryl Brohman not long after his career is over.

Actually thought Guerra went ok off the bench . Myles and Liillyman should go. For me I would nearly be incline to drop Thaiday before Guerra , unless he can show us something next week . And I am a long time fan of Sam . But lets face it , his best attribute is his ability to charge fearlessly into the opposition. Mayby age is catching up with Sam , especially as the season wears on and I suspect he will have fewer and fewer of those fearless charges as the season progresses.

Also think Corey Oates may need a rest next week. He has just taken too much punishment in the last week.

He doesn't even target the line anymore. He targets the markers even though they are always onside.

That isn't new from Sammy, he's been doing it for years.

The only reason I know is because it drives me absolutely insane. It's supposed to wear down the ruck, but I think it's just a wasted play.

Yes fucken this. He doesn't even get a quick play the ball from it

He must have had no impact because he didn't start on the bench haha. In all seriousness he isn't a rep player anymore. Needs to be let go. No shame. Father time hits everybody

Am starting to agree. Probably should retire at the end of the year.

I'm 99% sure that for the last 5+ years Thaiday has been getting picked in rep sides because he's a funny guy and good to have around.

'12 and '13 he was awesome, even pretty good in '15, but yeah otherwise he's cooked.

*For QLD, that is.

So how come there's been no talk of Thaiday getting a tap on the shoulder. I mean hodges and Parker both got swayed into retirement and we all knew early on. But Thaiday still gets placed amongst the elite.

I think you're right.

Also, the NRL should really give him a gig post-retirement to help pull their arses out of the fire when they need it, which is pretty much any day ending with 'y'.

As Steve Mascord pointed out - his joke about his virginity in the aftermath of the Origin game last year was at the same time Police announced they're investigating players regarding match-fixing.

So we have a pretty lame joke up against players allegedly throwing games.

What do you think got more coverage in the press?

Thaiday would be worth his weight in gold to the inept NRL.

No one can run without legs. Fifita will faceplant just fine with first tackler going around lower legs. Can't fend that low and step will be less effective. Even an ankle tap will do in a crunch. Might sacrifice a few quick play the balls but as said if whistle is away then don't have to be straight at marker or get back the full ten. Either that or if he is playing that well again sacrifice a lesser forward to ensure Fifita gets HIAed. Betting a dumb meathead like him fails to pass even if not concussed.

This is part of the reason why there are so many head clashes .Leading to lots of HIA`s. And all the mothers watching cringing at the thought of little Johny banging his head ,will turn more and more youngsters to other sports . Mum`s have a big say in what sport little Johny plays .
Every player wants to block tackle . Low tackling is a lost art .
2 block tacklers and then the low clean up man . The 3rd man low was late or ineffective too many times on Wednesday night .
That`s a measure of desire .

Dirty play and taking out the opposition is not acceptable in this era . Surprised Mc guire wasn`t charged for his swinging arm on Fafita . Late , intentional , dirty .

I seem to remember the same tactic (low tackling) was used successfully to stop blocker Roach in SOO years ago. With Fifita we will definitely need to wrap him up top as well as he is going down

The thing is about good low tackles is that wrappingthem up top isn't really as important as it may seem. The reasoning is that when falling ( which happens very quickly ) a player has only a fraction of a second to both try to off load and brace for impact. What's more important is to have a player ready to be marker and or covering the occasional off load. When taking the big guys on up top you are attacking their greatest strength, the most heavily muscled upper body. A solid low tackle on a gorilla at speed guarantees an early arrival on the ground, it also has the odd benefit of hurting them much more ! Hitting the reinforced concrete which is the upper story almost never causes them much bother.

The other benefit of low tackles is that there is little post contact metreage gained. Frequently we see Fifita and others make 10 or more metres post contact even with two or more defenders. I used to watch Allan Langer face plant giant after giant and that was after they changed the rules twice to thwart his efforts. He simply clung on with both arms and let his body and legs entangle the legs of his victims.

Yeah , you are probably right . I can still remember blocker Roach hitting the deck hard time and time again with only one guy around his ankles . Would probably need to go more conventional when close to our line though.

Oh absolutely! On the line, ten metres out and closer in you would certainly adopt different tactics.
