Should Wayne Bennett's Contract be Extended?

This is getting very messy.

The reports (if true) that wayne will not be extended mean that he will now consider all other options.

This speculation will not help the club and I can't see us doing much more than scraping into the 8 and not lasting too long in the play offs in which case they will pull the plug on wayne.

Even if he were to survive this so called end of season board meeting I don't think he will want to go into next season being a dead man walking. A few options are starting to emerge.

They are in no particular order:

Penrith: They do not have a coach for next year and their preferred option (Cleary) has supposedly ruled himself out.

Manly: Barret has sent the board some sort of legal letter demanding more support/resources from the leagues club. When a coach starts making demands on a board it is likely to end badly.

St George: They are starting to look like having another one of their late season fade outs after promising big things all season. The club may get tired of this occuring again. I don't know who is to blame but I know who will wear the blame. They may decide to look at other coaching options.

The way things are going I wouldn't be surprised if at least one more club has a 'coaching crises' at some stage soon.

There are a lot more twists and turns to this saga and none of them look like being any good.

then enlighten us ... where else are we weak
Some mental fortitude wouldn’t go astray.

I remember Bennett saying after the 2006 grand final that everyone was raving on about the Storm having Smith, Slater, Cronk and Inglis but he wasn’t concerned because we had Lockyer.

I personally think that’s partially (and obviously) because he was such an amazing player, but equally because he never got flustered and never gave up. Such a competitor and someone, when he was in your team, that made you feel like you were never out of a game, no matter how bad things might be.

The current (and recent (barring 2015) for that matter) Broncos do not exude such qualities.

And for clarity, I don’t mean a Lockyer in the team. Love him or hate him, Tallis was always the same. Lockyer said it himself, no one bullied a team with Tallis in it.

For too long we’ve been a team that, when things go south, we crumble. Is that a lack of leadership? Is it a lack of skill? Is it a lack of something else? I don’t know. But something is clearly missing.

It's a lack of leadership and that only comes from having 5 or 6 seasoned veterans with one real standout leader amongst them to ensure they are all on the same page. Sadly we are just falling short there we are perhaps one maybe two seasoned pros short and have no real standout leader at present.

Without that steel galvanising the youth our team is very vulnerable to dropping their bundle when push comes to shove. There is no real enforcer at present either. So other teams with those very same veterans find it easy to intimidate once they get a sniff of the team faltering. A great leader recognises this and snuffs it out before all the young colts panic and stampede en masse.

I've said before, Darbs may well be playing busted, but without his input we'd be even more vulnerable. If we can get a fully fit Bird and Gillo on the park next year along with Su'a and Hass we'll be far less susceptible to being rolled in defence.

I've followed the boys since inception and I can honestly say that I can't remember a season where we blooded so many colts in the course of a season and we're still three rounds out from the finals.

You really think Bennett would stay on as anything if we give him the arse? I think we know Wayne well enough to know that he can hold a fairly decent grudge. The old bastard is just as likely to stay coaching for as long as he can at another club to try and win a premiership purely to spite us.

Agreed. I don't think Bennett would stick around in any capacity other than head coach.

It's fun to wonder though.

I'm mainly in it for the lols.

Rugby League is so bat shit fucking crazy at the moment I could easily imagine the Broncos sacking Bennett this year and then he goes to the Panthers and wins the comp.

Would this forum even survive if that happened?

Like I said, think of the lolz.

It's a game of chicken, the board don't want to pay him out & will publicly say he will see out his contract while privately hoping another club bites.

Maybe because Melbourne bluffed us a beauty and we paid overs for milf?..appreciate we didn’t think the dragons would pay overs for hunt but we let Taylor go and thought he’d roll on back... come on Wayne has to take some responsibility notwithstanding some uncontrollables.

Defending is attitude (particularly goal line) which is a straight line to coaching IMO. It looks like we’ve stopped playing for him.

Your loyalty to Old timers is admirable but i think a rookie would have done better than Thaidays 34 running metres on Thursday and think Boyd sets a rotten example to young players with the nonsense in the ruck. If he was Kahu, he’d have been dropped 5 times this year . Yeah I know he’s the captain...the worst in our 30 year history
I'm certain, absolutely certain Tagatese would have added more than Sam Thaiday did in the last game. I'd say triple to quadruple those numbers if not more.

Dont be surprised if Bennett does go a certain mate of Paul White doesnt get thrown into the mix for our next head coach.

Absolutely 10 million percent. Thaiday is a poor example and possibly too much of a clown in his current condition.

His win rate is still close to 60%. I'm not sold on him, and would prefer Seibold because he has the potential to be a 15-20 year coach, but he's better equipped at handling the job than some noob.

EDIT: I'd take Wayne over all of them. I can understand the club looking to move on with him coming out and saying he doesn't know how much longer he has left, but he'll call time before he goes a year too long. What the **** are the Broncos meant to do? Wait until he does retire, which could theoretically be in a month because we are a real chance of missing the finals, and then scramble for a coach? Let Wayne, who is admitting by retiring that he's passed it, choose a successor (hasn't EVER worked in the past might I add)? They're in a very tough spot, and Wayne isn't making it any easier by threatening to throw the toys out of the cot and move clubs like a 70 year old toddler.

Also, how is he meant to know if he's gone on a year too long? Many on here will argue that he's already lost it.

EDIT 2: Trying to play devil's advocate here and see the other side of the issue because I'm firmly in the keep Bennett camp for now.
Retiring doesn't mean your past it. Stupid statement. I could do my job at the highest level for another 5-10 but I am going to retire. I just won Lotto, see there are other reasons that can encourage you to retire.

Don't know 2ho Whites mates are, who is on that short list ? Hint, bold letters where appropriate.

Something is not right? Like the list someone posted earlier of Things That Crazy Uncle Bennett fucked?

I’d say having a marquee signing arrive busted would be one thing. He was the Hodges-like mongrel scrapper that we’ve missed since ‘15. Our best defensive player fracturing his neck a few games in sucks too. Add that, and the reality that some people can’t grasp in that young, raw players just simply are not consistent.

There were literally no halfbacks left that weren’t pea-hearted bitches (Pearce) or available for anything remotely close to what they were worth (Hunt, Taylor), so what exactly should we have done?

Oh, more season-ending injuries, and an unblinking media campaign to destabilise everyone from Matt Lodge through to Bennett.

Even the Boyd/Isaako switch is being done with a look to the future - like what the Roosters did with Mini & RTS, Bennett has found that Isaako’s ball-playing is not where it needs to be so he’s going to learn by watching the veteran.

People shitting on Bennett because they don’t understand how shit works, or because they don’t care and just want us to win every game out of entitled arrogance, is what has allowed the media to get a foothold. And now we’re going to see exactly what that petulance results in.

You are missing the point i am trying to make. Every team has to deal with an injury, or internal drama, during the season. The way in which the team has performed around this is not acceptable. There is a significant attitude difference for a team that loses by 30 to a team that loses by 1. Unfortunately when things turn to mud, the side of the fence this balance sits on is not great.

If our squad is that fragile that taking out Gillett or having Bird injured since the day he walked in amounts to such a significance that we fall in a heap with no resilience or discipline on field - then we should be playing netball. Neither player are that huge and the talent around them both in age, maturity and fresh legs should be enough to be performing more consistently then so far.

I am shitting on the results and performances and some of the personnel choices. Promising a halfback his position in the media was mistake number 1. Promising Thaiday would finish the season in top grade was mistake number 2. These two alone would be pissing players inside the 30 man squad off and i dare say even the starting side. They are not sack-able decisions, but they do raise a fair question if he is heading in the right direction. Of course we do not know all the information or whats discussed out of the media eye.

The only mate lf his I know of is Griffin.
Ha ha, I just remembered that after I asked the question. Unsettling to think that the usually well informed Wolfie seems to think it's likely.

Chris Garry has posted on Twitter that Bennett will not get an extension and pending a review he may be gone as soon as October.

I’m a biased Bennett supporter so I have to think there are things happening behind the scenes that we aren’t privvy too. Otherwise this is very reactionary. If that’s the case then I will support the club’s decision and not bitch or moan.

I really hope that they have a good candidate ready to replace him though.

If Griffin comes back here, Red Hill is officially a boys club and I will have lost all faith in the current board.

Perhaps the drunkard Slothfield was spot on a few weeks back when he claimed it had something to do with WBs new partner and OTHER issues.

Interesting article. Sounds like he's got a good attitude and approach.

Taga played a great game at north’s the Saturday before too. The losses don’t hurt thaiday anymore either, i’m Certain of it. He sat in that PC and didn’t appear to give a toss.
