NEWS Boyd Urged to Consider Early Retirement

We all did hear Boyd say if asked to retire for retaining the young blokes he would put the team first, right? Maybe the club hasn't talked to him yet because the money isn't actually needed yet and they have their clause for next year. The panic is media generated crap, the guys we let off and the upgrades we have given are not equal yet. Their is no way. You can look back at when we signed Sua , TPJ was going to be gone ect the media are full of it. The club so far has not allowed one player we want stay, go to another club.

I think this is very true.

The media love us being mediocre, it does their job for them. They don't have to chase stories or work hard because The Broncos being mediocre or 'also-rans' sells papers and get's clicks. The can just write story after story of "look how shit they are", "look at this player they missed", "remember when they could have signed Smith, Thurston, Slater etc." "They have no halves (conveniently ignoring our extensive injuries/suspension at half)", "couldn't beat the Rabbitoh's who without Burgess (nevermind that we without Turpin and TPJ and they have one of the best spines in the comp that have been together for over 2 years)" and it will get clicks because the large Broncos fanbase will read it and all the Broncos haters (which is everyone outside of their fans) will read it to laugh and feel justified in their hate.

They are terrified if we keep this forward pack together we will be competitors for a decade and where will they get their clicks then? Also usual, if the media are hating us we are doing something right.

Apparently your brain cannot allow you to see the OTHER attacking player. Boyd tried to cover Roberts, the pass AND the other attacking player. He was positioned perfectly but like a thousand players before he was beaten by pace and the fact he was virtually stationary.
I do wish you had of said he was `stationery' because then I could have said he was just enveloped by the situation.

Where Boyd was after Roberts had busted the tackle, ran 5-6 metres and started changing direction -

"He couldn't cover the gap. No one could" 😂

Not to good at judging measurements. Boyd is standing at 5m and takes a step back, Roberts changes direction a few strides in. At most 3m , big difference. Not saying he could've done better but you're exaggerating the distance and time to react if you want to blame someone for that play , have a look at the defenders on the ground in the front line.

It's not impossible to avoid the media and social media. If I didn't want to look at it, I wouldn't have a clue whats going on. You just don't look at it or use it. He would be aware probably when he does interviews of some things, but he could easily have no idea what they are talking about.
It is simply impossible to do what you’ve suggested, particularly when you are the captain of the Brisbane Broncos and quite literally have the media asking you questions most days.

I’m not saying that’s necessarily fair, but with fame and fortune comes increased scrutiny, so it is what it is.

Indeed, even if you are just an Average Joe, if you do the mundane task of leaving your house for the day, you will see what’s going on in the media. Aside from the obvious sources you MAY be able to avoid for one day, you cannot control overhearing what others say or seeing newspapers in the lunchroom at work or at the coffee shop you go to - and that’s just in one day.

How do you think someone could do that, as well as not turn on the TV or check their text messages or emails for months on end?

His only chance; be Tom Hanks in Cast Away.

Wouldn't people at the footy grounds be yelling shit at him? How does he not hear that?

When the players and management are telling us that Darius brings a lot to the team as captain, it makes me wonder what they see that I don't. Then I remember that we haven't won a premiership in 12 seasons and this probably plays a large part in why I don't trust their judgement.

The media aren't just after the Broncos guys. Have a look at how the knives have come out for the Knights and the Panthers. As soon as they smell blood in the water they start a feeding frenzy on the carcass. Let's not play the "they only hate the broncos" victim mentality when it comes to the media.

As it stands, I have been loving the knives for the knights, it's been bloody glorious. Just gotta take it when it's our turn, and can I say it's warranted - we do need to spend our money on a half. We do have an under performing captain and we are spending a lot of money on a forward pack that has no-one to steer it.

If you don't have a phone or a tv it wouldn't be difficult at all. I know a few people who don't, but they are in the minority.

Like I said before though, he can still be unaware of what's being said about him even if people ask the questions. I genuinely believe he takes no notice of anything media or social media related.

Oh, to be honest I did. I only caught it during the proof read!

It's true that we have the media in our faces all the time but there's literally dozens of shows I know nothing about simply because they hold no interest for me. Similarly I know virtually nothing about the afl despite the Lions doing well, I don't even know who the coach is nor any of the players.

I agree with you @Wolfie that one can shut out many of the distractions and I believe Boyd because he is well practiced at avoiding the gibberish since his battle with mental health was joined in earnest.

I too know a couple of families without tv and limited internet who seek to shield their children for a little while longer during their early years.

as a fan, you see a very small amount of sample of the captains requirements (i.e. game day)

I suspect that you also make the same mistake many fans make ... and that is mistaking poor form for poor leadership

C'mon now Foordy good leaders lead by example, Boyd is not capable of doing this anymore, therefore equals bad leader. Pretty simple 👍

I think we may be discussing different things, or more specifically, what he’s saying and what it means.

Being oblivious to something means you are neither aware of it, nor does it concern you.

I don’t know (and none of us can for sure) what or how much of it he actually takes in (I said as much in my earlier post when I said he may be unperturbed etc. by it) but I do know he simply can’t be unaware of it - the noise has been / is deafening.

So to say he is oblivious to it is just not true - IMO anyway.

I still think he is because he pays zero attention to it. He would be aware to a point people are saying things about him, but it doesn't have any real effect on his mindset because he pays no attention to it whatsoever. The people whose opinions matter to him are all giving him no reason to doubt himself. That more of a worry probably.

Exactly, I have no idea about AFL and what's going on at the Lions, except for the hilights on the news/radio, and I'm not even actively trying to avoid AFL news.

Geez I did not know that Boyd was that strong mentally, he has come a long way since his mental issues several years back.

Not sure if you know him personally Wolfie but what you are saying doesn't really make sense. Surely it is likely that his poor form and harassment by the media and fans would be affecting his mindset.

None of us apart from Boyd actually know what's going through his head.

No I don't know him, and I'm basing things mainly off a few people I know who know him and him in interviews saying he reads nothing these days.
