Tom Dearden Discussion

Kid had syndismosis of the ankle tried to come back aggravated it .
How is that an example of his body needs more conditioning ?

Never heard of conditioning the ligaments that hold the bones of the leg together have you ?
Nothing to do with his injury. Everything to do with him being a teenager who hasn't even had a Queensland Cup standard pre-season yet, much less an NRL one. If you think a teenager who started last season in MM Cup and played like 8 games last year against grown men can't use more conditioning work before beginning a full season long NRL campaign then, hey, be my guest.

The warning signs are already there this year that his body could use some more conditioning to get him up to speed.

What warning signs were you seeing ?

I agree strength and conditioning could help him compete. But he didn`t look out muscled or puffed in the games I saw him play ?

...im not sure you can actually be serious with this...?

Not having a dig but..

Sezer and Croft have more NRL games than both Dearden & SoS combined; we don't even have a statistically valid sample size for both to make ANY sort of determination about what their first grade future with the club will look like?

You don't **** around with your halfback, neither of ours are NRL ready....they "may" never be NRL ready (i doubt it but..). Sezer and Croft are far more experienced and with Croft in particular his ceiling hasnt been touched yet.

Did John Plath have a successful career with Broncos? Did Brisbane find a way to include Ben Walker in the team when Alf and Kev (and Plath!) were here?

Having depth in this position is HARDLY a problem to lose sleep over...

I would disagree about Dearden not being NRL ready. He showed this year that he wasn't out of his depth in first grade. He defended really well, he played with poise and confidence. It was obvious that the responsibilty of being the primary game manager was given to Milf and Dearden was fairly impressive in his role. I'm eager to see what young Tom has to offer when shouldered with more responsibility.

so am i.....i truly hope he turns out to be what we all hope...but i also just witness a season where a few young guys were handed the responsibilities of steering the team well before they should be expected too...

So theres that too..........id rather see him hone his game than take that amount of responsibility from players, coaches and fans.

Yeah it's a tough one. After listening to him speak a couple of times, I got the impression that he has his head screwed on a little bit more than the average young bloke. For some reason I think he will handle the transition fairly well.

Me too, there is something about Dearden which screams confidence. He didn’t make a mistake in his six games, definitely under-playing his hand. But good to see that he can.

I wouldn’t be adverse to getting Croft either though, as someone pointed out - competition for spots isn’t a bad thing

I disagree, besides Fifita / Haas he has been the only thing keeping this team going. He gets a lot of hate considering he needs to account for not having a 1,7 or 9 in the team.

I don't disagree. I've said for a long time that I won't judge him too harshly based on the cluster **** of a spine that he's had to deal with this year. That said, he doesn't look in top shape and he hasn't for a long time. Considering he's a professional athlete, that shows a lack of commitment and/or discipline. The club need to challenge him to get back to where he was, which I think is what Sproj was getting at.

How many tackle busts for Milf this season ?
No where near enough at either 5 / 8 or FB .

I’m really not hating on Dearden. I like the kid and hope he kills it but I really have yet to see anything impressive in first grade. He was a passenger in attack. His defence wasn’t as good as people are making out. He was brave and never dogged it but he would often hold on for dear life until a fellow defender was able to help and he barely slowed the opponent down. Sure it might be the fault of the game plan or that Milf was the dominant role but even if it isn’t Dearden’a fault I still haven’t seen anything to suggest he should be locked in for next year.

He didn’t just hang on for dear life. He hit and stuck which is what you want from everyone and especially the halves. No matter who makes first contact there should always be someone coming to finish the tackle.

Simply don't agree with this. We looked immediately better with an actual hb

Milf played a lot more confidently with Dearden there imo. They were clicking, Milford looked less stressed and was playing with some initiative.

It was very promising.

Yep, watch the roosters game, he communicated well with shiba and gillett and our brittle right side actually held up well.

The roosters also tried to isolate him with mitchell but he got in front each time and handled it.

I’d be happy to admit if I were wrong. Maybe I wasn’t watching him closely enough.

To me it looked as though he was under instructions to not over play his hand and to keep it super simple. There were little moments where he had to do something because he ended up with the ball and he owned those little moments. It wasn’t highlight reel stuff but enough to prove he has what it takes.
