if Oates was all about the $$$ he would be playing for a Sydney club next season
I honestly don't think many clubs were willing to go near the price he wanted. I really don't think there was much demand there at all. He is an above average winger wanting the biggest salary of any winger...

he was reportedly offered 700k a season by one Sydney club ... i have no doubt there would have been plenty of demand for him. he is a big strong winger, that makes plenty of meters (especially coming out of our own end) and a knack for getting the ball over the try line.

Makes sense for both parties. He is familiar with players already present and is joining a side with a terrible backline, and also will have Holmes and probably another big gain like B Smith in the squad fairly soon.

Or it could be nothing. I'm wagering nobody had the balls to approach him and ask him what he was doing in Townsville. It could be as simple as something like a holiday.
Didn’t Geno come from TOwnsville. Probably visiting the wife’s relatives

Yes, we all need a bex and a good lie down.
Showing your age there! It's really quite strange you used that expression as I was researching that very thing only a few hours ago. I was chatting with my boss about Vincents and Bex, things he'd never heard of. I was telling him about my mum who slammed Bex down quite frequently.

And then he ***** off the next year to another club on more money...
That's fine? How good a year could he possibly have to justify more than 400-500k on a Winger?

I think you're looking at this all wrong. The club are prepared to keep him for three years at whatever price they've agreed on. The club obviously can't pay him any more and for now he's happy to accept that. We get to keep him for now without having to pay overs because of potential etc and he can spend the next three seasons proving he's worth more than that if he's capable of it.

If he goes on to play way above that salary and another club wants to pay it then so be it, but we probably won't be in that position no matter what. If he wants to stay here he gets his current salary most likely, but if someone else wants to pay a heap more then good luck to them and him.

It's also not like we can't upgrade his deal at some point too if we feel he's worth more to retain. At least we'll have the inside running because he's already here.

By giving the player option, we may have been able to negotiate a lower salary than if we were to sign him for a straight 3 years.

Besides, given contracts these days, even signing a straight 3 years, players can wiggle their way out of contracts.

Bingo, I'm guessing that's exactly what's happened here. @Morepudding seems to be really missing this point.

Sure, if he plays well we might lose him to a better offer or we'll have to upgrade his deal, but it means at this stage we can retain him for a fair price, probably the minimum amount he would have taken anywhere, which likely makes it good value for 2020 at least and it puts us in the box seat to retain him again if he kills it.

These player options will more likely become the norm now, I for one dislike the player option, but managers these days will find every possible loophole to exploit the system.

Boyd and Macca are two examples of terrible LONG term p/o deals - I’m comfortable with Oates and 3 years

I predict that Fifi will sign for 4 years with two of them being player options.

Could you imagine if Haas had a player option?

I just hate how the players run the game and not the clubs or administration. If you compare this to team sports anywhere else in the world, it's not like that. Football, AFL, NFL, NBL, the clubs are always bigger than the player. Not here. We can't get transfer periods, can't get drafts, can't extend the length of season, all because the RLPA says no. Fucking bullshit.

not the case anymore with most of those sports. It’s their managers who have most of the control. The NBA can’t do anything about it, the NFL is slowly drifting towards player/manager power.

The biggest club in the world (Dallas Cowboys) had to pay a running back who still had two years and franchise tags left on the his contract.

Soccer / football in the exact position, in most cases players at big clubs can and will get out of contracts

The difference with other sports is competition though.

The NFL is basically the only league of its type and has huge rights deals... so if you get punished by the adminstration you've got no where else to go.

NBA is the highest paying and most prestigious basketball league in the world so falls under the same category as NFL... except some other minnow leagues are treated similar to how super league is in league

AFL is only played in 3 states across the planet

NRL competes with union who either have ridiculous salaries overseas (Japan, Europe, etc.) or the high paying salary earners are getting it straight from the national federation ie. Unrestricted salary caps.

The only sport even closely resembling league in terms of player transfers is football in European countries and the transfer system is just as disruptive, but condensed down to 2 periods a year. However that doesnt really end the media speculation and rumours... it doesnt stop the players whinging and looking to get out of contracts early, etc. The only real advantage they create is the team being compensated financially by disgruntled players looking to move on mid contract.

Not sure if it's been posted, but Mr. Mole is reporting that Jamil Hopoate is heading back to Sydney.
