Jake Turpin Discussion

The answer is fairly simple but the coach doesn't get it.

Turpin - 30 mins to start
Paix - 10 mins before half time, 15 after
Turpin - 25 mins to finish

That way you can be explosive at 9 for the full game.

I certainly wasn't. At this point I'm speculatively blaming the coach for not encouraging him to run. His outstanding defence, in this context, is a non-sequitur. But it's part of the package that makes him attractive.

That would be a strange conclusion to make, given it was Seibold who turned Cook from an average first grader to the Australian hooker in less than a season.

You'll have to define "pretty good". He hadn't looked too different to me....other than having different players around him.

I'd rather be playing someone else. Paix?

Paix would be a good option

I think Macca just looked a bit more dynamic in what he was doing at Newcastle. Maybe the change sparked him a little.

Turpin gametime in minutes this season. He usually tops the tackle count, or close to it:

Cowboys: 57
Souths: 63
Eels: 80
Sharks: 60
Souths: 65

How much do you want to cut it back?
NB: we have the worst point diff in the final twenty minutes in NRL history.

I'd be playing Jake probably the first 25-30 mins, swapping him with Luke or Paix, then bringing him back on for the last 25-30 depending on how the game is going. Its all about managing him to keep him fresh. Playing him 60 mins straight is no good, he cant handle it. Topping the tackle count shouldnt really be what we are judging our hooker on anyway. Thats how a lot of people defended Macca.

Spot on.
So fucking simple!

Turpin is above average with scope to improve. Compared to Harry Grant, Turpin is about a 6.5/10, Grant 8/10. Just wish Turpin had more height and weight to him, but he plays with heart and adds a new attacking dimension and speed to the team which Macca lacked.

I'm sorry, but that just makes too much sense. Never going to work.

You can't turn someone like Turpin into a 80 min hooker during the season, it all has to be done in the off season with more stamina training.

Seibolds interchange with him last night was beyond stupid, rests in each half work better then playing 4/5ths of the game no break.

I do think though if he doesn't lift and be an adequate 80 min hooker next season we should be looking elsewhere.

Turpins problem his game is based around spells of high intensity and impact. He isnt an 80 minute hooker and playing him that way dulls what he does imo. He is a solid player, but there is a lot in his game thats missing compared to the better hookers. If we keep playing him the way we are, he is going to be no better than Macca tbh. He is just going to become a tackle bot.
I wonder if Turps can become a utility player on the bench like BSmith, Jazz, etc.

he’d need a little bulking up, but he brings energy with his defence and he’s always supporting through the middle if something happens... would also provide cover to hooker if an injury occurred.

I only suggest it because he looks somewhat limited at hooker and a guy like Paix may be earmarked... I think we should hard for BSmith anyway... but Turps is very handy as a defender in the middle (last night’s miss excluded) so all he’d need is an ability to take some runs in the middle and he suddenly becomes a very handy player to any team.

I guess the difference is Jazz, BSmith, Robson, McInnes, etc. who have been used in this role in the past are pretty accomplished runners to begin with

He’s looking for a new contract... Macca plays well when there’s pressure on his position

He is fairly safe until the end of next year with his option for 2021.
Yeah but he's pretty well unemployed beyond that.

He went to Newcastle because he wants another contract.

Another 3 yr deal and then off to become a copper.

It looks very long odds he'll get that extra contract now that he's injured, because he comes back to Brisbane to resume the role as depth... unless there's an injury... so considering our current luck Macca will play 24 games next year after Turps and Paix do ACL's tackling each other in preseason

I dont think he will stress too much about it. He has another year of a good contract at Brisbane, he will be almost 32 by the time its done. I think he more went to Newcastle to play imo rather than chasing a contract. I could see Brown actually trying to get him to the Warriors for next year.

So he went to Newcastle just to play... seems a bit of a dog act to just up and leave your team mates because you're not getting a game.

He may have issues with the direction of the coach, but apparently he's happy to just relocate to Sydney to play out the second last year of his contract.

If he's looking to retire end of 2021 then it seems more plausible that the admin said we have received an offer for you to go to Newcastle and we can use your cash to get a couple other players (at that point they had a spot to fill (excluding a replacement for Macca), but only Perese's cash available... probably on $75k )

I cant see how it was a dog act. The conversation must have been had that he wouldnt be getting much game time so rather than kick his heels here he went to play some footy. I'm sure if Fraudbold said we needed him here he would have stayed. I cant see any issue with what he has done when he was surplus to requirements. If he stayed he would have probably been accused of taking money from the club for nothing and if he cared about the Broncos he would have walked away from his contract. Its one of those situations where with some people he just cant win.

It really is that simple, yet our spud of a coach can't see it.
Getting rid of said spud is also that simple, yet our bag of spuds (AKA the board) can't see it.
