Broncos Player Movement and Rumours 2020

Fox sports is quoting a channel 7 report saying that both us and the Titans are "monitoring" the situation with Papalli

James was off contract and Boyd was granted a release as reported on NRL.com. The only overpaid ones left would be Ash and possibly Wallace on 600k which is barely a salary cap killer. I won't go into too much detail as I have posted it somewhere else before but we have literally got rid of over 4M of cap space this year and signed just over 2M to come in. I repeat we are not struggling for cap space. Only reason we wouldn't have a go is we already have a fairly strong forward rotation and our weaknesses are elsewhere. Obviously some of that cap might also be needed for upgrades and a salary cap decrease is also a possibility.

As much as I would usually love to have him at the Titans if he comes to QLD I would have money on it being the Broncos. Not because we don't have the money but because he isn't what we lack and hence wouldn't bring as much value as a strike centre or elite hooker. Hope you get him.

I’m happy to talk Titans but this should really go in your thread from now on. This is a Broncos player movement thread, so in terms of the Titans, in this thread no one cares.

They shouldn't be getting any cap relief for Boyd.

You can't medically retire for being fat and no longer able to play the game.
Mate, it isn't about the medical grounds, it's about the player themselves and particularly the club they play for and how invested the NRL is in seeing that club get what they need. It's why Inglis was able to be retired at a club like Souths despite signing up to play 5 minutes later in the ESL and now is even talking up an Origin comeback, also why the Titans who the NRL have had enough of propping up financially are able to get someone like Boyd off their books with no real questions asked if it helps them relieve a financial burden and become more competitive.

I don't know why people keep bringing up Inglis. He literally just retired, any player is allowed to do that just like Boyd is retiring and not taking up his contract for next year.

Genuine remark / question, as I don’t follow the Titans.

If you’ve only signed $2mil for next year, surely Fifita and Tino take up most of that, so you haven’t signed anyone else, or at least anyone of note?

Just them and Ese'ese with perhaps a few re-signings/possible small upgrades i.e. Jolliffe/Lisone.

Didn't he get a $500,000 "ambassador" type role immediately after?

Anyone who truly believes someone (s Boyd, Burgess or inglis) would give up $100,000s, I have a bridge I can sell you.

It's different, Boyd is getting his money in some form. Inglis took some work to figure out because he walked away from his contract- that's why last year they got little to no relief from Inglis and his pay up to retirement was included and any future earnings from Souths for his coaching role was under the cap.

They couldn't include his contract because he never got it. Pretty rare for a player to just walk away and be happy to take up a role with a third of the pay.

What do you mean by your first line? If Boyd doesn't take up his PO for next year (which I understand he would have been eligible to?) why would he get any pay for next year.

I get the whole it's hard to walk away from a million thing but Cam Smith will walk away from an easy million + next year straight into a club role and earn big money for it. It happens all the time when greats retire.

My understanding is any off field role he got was included entirely under the salary cap until the conclusion of his original contract. So they only cap relief they got was his original contract minus the difference in his new role.

Boyd is only half way through his contract, he will get a pay out and it will be on the cap. Inglis didn't get a payout.

Players get off field jobs but they don't normally walk away from their playing contract and take up another role with less money. NRL had to make sure that the role he was doing for Souths wasn't 1 million dollars a year to pump up footballs. The role has to match the pay. Once they were satisfied that the role matched the pay it was on the cap for last year. It closed the temptation of players and clubs retiring guys to massive pay for nothing jobs.

1.25 million + 600,000. Ese ese 300,000 MINIMUM. Say 500,000 on upgrades. There's also no way you get every single CENT of the contracted players contracts off of the salary cap, that'd be politis-like cap management with some souffs-level NRL help . You release 8 players you need to replace all 8 in your cap space. You can't just fill spots with 4 million dollar players

Would just like to mention in regards to potentially luring Brandon Smith here next year, his younger brother Jayden is currently attending my beloved Wavell State High School (Pretty handy player himself by all accounts).

That's gotta be a factor if he does hit the open market.

Great news to look forward to if you're a Storm or Roosters fan, because if he is in fact a handy player running around within 15 minutes of Red Hill then he's probably **** all chance of being picked up by the Broncos.

wait, so even though Boyd isn’t taking up his player option next year, he will still take up some amount of cap space in 2021?

**** me, his extension has to be one of the worst NRL contracts of all time.
