Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2021

I think that players as a general rule don't give two shits about who the CEO is. it likely doesn't even factor into their thinking, unless they are worried about whether they will be paid or not, which isn't an issue when talking to a club like the Broncos.

on Kevie. they could look at him as an unproven coach ... or they could look at it as being coached by a legend of the game, who has won 5 premierships, multiple Origin and Test series as a player and won Origin as a coachso he knows how to win.

on the wooden spoon, they could look at it and see an off year, riddled with injuries and COVID issues under a poor performing coaching team that are now gone. IMO, one outlier year doesn't alter the perception of the club too much. This is a club that has always been in the conversation for the top rather than the bottom. now if the 2020 season becomes a pattern, then that is a different story. Hell, players these days have big enough ego's they probably think they can turn things around on their own.

What players would see is club that has the best facilities in the league, a roster that has some talented young players (although a few tweaks are needed) in a city with a lower cost of living than either Sydney or Melbourne.
Some players might see it your way, but I’m sure many don’t.

regardless, we’ll soon find out through the actions of players. Coates and Staggs definitely don’t give me the impression that they view the club in a particularly positive light, nor did Fifita’s, or Jack Bird’s.

most players aren't as the sky is falling, doomsday prophesy, the apocalypse has arrived as the majority of BHQ.

I'm not sure Jack Bird ever really wanted to be here

Fifita had no issues, until he saw the $$$ signs from the Titans, which IMO, has had the likes of Coates and Staggs (or at least their advisors) also seeing the $$$ signs. now they are trying to force the club into offering them overs to keep them (which IMO contributed to the 2020 season by doing what the fans wanted and keeping the young players at any cost)

Saw a quote from Tom Trbojevic and his brother about re-signing with Manly. Said both knew there was maybe big money on offer elsewhere, but told their managers they don't even want to look around - Manly is where they want to be and as long as the offer is reasonable then get the deal done, they were happy and wanted to stay loyal.
Was touching and refreshing to see considering every player we have wants to innocently 'test the waters of the open market' before they're even off contract. It's half the grubby managers and half these poorly guided players.
This 'its just a game' / 'its all business' type mentality is eating away at the fabric of our game and it's good to see a couple of talented young fellas use a bit of common sense and old fashioned loyalty to make an easy decision in everyone's best interests.
Good on them, wish we had more players like that here.

Agree to disagree I guess. If you really don’t think players care about the mess the club is currently in than I couldn’t be bothered to convince you otherwise.

I definitely don’t think the sky is falling. I think it already fell last season and is now on the way back up.

both got pretty well paid iirc, one just over 1 million a season the other just under.

Fifita would have got pretty well paid here too

yeah but in the Turbo's case it was a difference of about 100k (not to mention that there was the possibility they wouldn't be able to keep playing together if they left Manly) ... in Fifita's case it was a 500k difference

We have lost better players than Coates in the past and will lose better players in the future.

He is not close to an Inglis clone at the moment, just doesn't have the physicality at this stage of his career. He could very well develop into one of the better wingers in the game, he could also not go any further than a solid wing with good pace and finishing skills. I'm happy to let another club pay overs to find out which version they get.

I'm in the camp of offer him a decent contract (~300k) for 2 years with a strict tight deadline and if he umms and ahhs over it take it off the table and publicly state to the media that Xavier Coates has decided to not sign on with the Broncos and both parties will move in other directions. Time to put a line in the sand around contracts, especially young players, weed out the guys who don't want to make sacrifices to be here.

See this is the real elephant in the room. When did Red Hill change coffee beans and vendors? I’d dare say this is what started the rot.
Never seen a coffee 'bean'.

Honestly just **** him off. He wants to play these shit games of making sure he is seen having coffee with rivals then just get rid of him. The culture is shot and the last thing we need is entitled brats like him that think the owe the club nothing and deserve the world after a handful of tries scored and triple that amount let in.
I dont think the very public meeting is on coates. I am guessing it was very much arranged by his agent and/or melb. Just that extra push to make brisbane panic and offer overs for fear of losing him.

Like people have said, premierships are not won on the back of wingers (particularly one dimensional wingers with lots of holes in their games).

Do what we did with Fifita, offer what we see as fair and don’t pay overs because his manager is manipulating the situation.there Needs to be a hard line on contracts, offer them what they’re worth to you and don’t match stupid offers from other clubs.

seriously, coats has years to go before he’s a finished product.

Put him on Addo-Carrs vacant wing position in 2022 getting fed ball by Munster. Kids a freak in the making.

The very public meeting for coffee might have been Bellamy getting one back for the very public meeting between Seibold and Croft.
