Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2021

Just had a thought - everyone knows how well Sam Walker is going at the Roosters and correct me if I am wrong but I do not believe he is signed on beyond the end of the year with them. He has been mentioned as one of the many halves available at the end of the year. Now I do not expect him to come back here but it certainly wouldn't be a bad move if Broncos signed his dad and uncle as assistant coaches? Might be bit of an incentive to lure him back here but would still be a longshot.

100% no point in recruiting and developing juniors. They just leave for more money anyway.
I think a bit issue and why our forwards are so shit is because a lot of them have a background in rugby union where they don’t need to run back each play and also don’t run into the ball as hard. Most union players stand still and run a few metres like ours do (particularly cardigan). Our team is so fundamentally flawed it’s funny. Also, what’s the go with all our players being offered stupid money when we are going for back to back spoons but no one tries to sign anyone from any other club.

we are so beyond fucked if a second Brisbane team comes

Need more paper bag money to get anyone to leave the roosters. Simply doesn’t happen. They haven’t lost a player they wanted to keep in a decade

After this week this is where you want your chairman to come out and subtly hint that the broncos are reviewing the possibility of reducing junior investment funding.

It's not a decision that anyone can make except the board... you can use the fact that Fifita (scoring a hat trick), Walsh (debuting ahead of RTS... even though 6 rounds ago he was a bronco on a development deal) and Dearden being poached has made the club reevaluate the benefits of investing so much money into junior identification and development and whether it's actually worth it.

You wouldn't do it as the chairman coming out and releasing a statement you would simply do it as a journo asking planted questions
"what did you think of the Walsh's debut?"
"Are you disappointed to see Dearden leave?"
"Are you disappointed seeing Fifita playing elsewhere and other Broncos kids playing and succeeding elsewhere?"

That way it's just throw away lines, but it still plants the story that one of the biggest clubs is thinking of turning its back on junior development (because there's no benefit) and make the league think of how they would fix the mess that would be created from it.

Obviously other clubs would just up their involvement on junior development in qld, but can they cover everything the broncos do and would it just end up as a patchwork mess with teams vulturing and cherry picking.

Sydney clubs wouldn't really care all that much and would just be looking to pillage and plunder a couple kids that look good each year... that becomes a QRL issue, and if QLD talent drops to the back burner because it's left to Shitney clubs then state of origin becomes an issue down the track as less and less QLD talent is making it to NRL.

GC would talk a big game about upping their involvement, but their entire recruitment plan has been poaching broncos that played at Keebra Park or PBC... unlikely they would have the resources to venture out too far from that.
I wouldn't have any idea as to the money required to up the Titans involvement, but to be fair to them, all of the players you mentioned, (Dearden, Walsh and Fifita) all went to PBC or Keebra Park. We now have agreements with both of those schools as well as Marsden. Would it even be worth our while digging in to Brisbane when, with exceptions, the majority go to these schools. I'm no junior scout but from what I hear, they're easily the three biggest league schools in our general vicinity.

This also seems to overlook the fact the second Brisbane team is coming and given I believe one of our biggest mistakes when coming in was having no junior base whatsoever with even Sydney teams having deals with Keebra etc. They might be more than happy to pick up where you left off. It is a big risk if that happens imo especially surrounding junior support. Why wouldn't young kids latch onto the second Brisbane team thats attached to their junior clubs etc. as they'd be exposed to it all the time.

Just some quick thoughts, I'm by no means an expert.

This would be the point... Broncos wouldn't actually pull out of junior development they would just threaten to do it in an attempt to send NRL into crisis mode... "Who will pick up the slack?"

GC via Mal would suggest "look if broncos want to pull out that's fine with us we will just pick up the slack"... but they wouldn't. Why would they bother they have created agreements with Keebra Park (only took them 14yr) and PBC. Broncos should be pissed about losing Marsden though (another serious **** up by R&R).

The Brisbane plastics don't even exist yet, but to think they will be able to start up in Ipswich or Redcliffe and then instantly expand out to cover the kind of ground Brisbane already do at start up would be a bit much.

The NSWRL teams would just jump in and start throwing down flags to mark their territories and pick scraps here and there. It would leave qld development in the lurch for a long time... and that would be a problem for QRL and NRL by way of state of origin.

But it is NSWRL so they probably wouldn't really care until Melbourne and Roosters kick up a stink about one of their development teams proposing to pull its funding.

He wanted to be fullback. Roosters offered him good money but couldn’t give him fullback with Teddy. That’s all that is.

He was still a player they wanted to keep

If the Broncos aren't in his ear ALREADY offering him close to $1m / year to move back home then they are nothing short of completely incompetent and negligent.

If you're going to gamble on a young player to build your team around then this is the one. Yes, he's probably happy in Bondi, but Fifita was happy too until money came knocking and this kid will be no different. It's not good enough to wait for players to become available, we need to front-foot our recruitment and create our own opportunities. Same thing with Grant.

Ponga was even more of a gamble when the Knights made the same move - and look where they would be without him.

The most upsetting part of the weekend is Demas Wong has found his way to Panthers and analysing his little heart out and they're top of the table.
Did demas do anything wrong here? It’s getting more and more clear that the players need children’s picture books to explain what 5 tackles means.

I don't think Ponga was a gamble at all, they were even more of a basket case than we are

also about Sam Walker, you throw a kid like that in our team full of inexperience and all that, he probably doesn't look half as good

That Roosters side is a gun team

Not at the end of the day. Not at the position he wanted. It doesn’t count when they leave to change positions. At the end of the day they chose Tedesco at fullback over latrell at fullback
