Walsh should have started the year at fullback. We need to show confidence in young players.. Not mess them around until all their confidence is gone.

The fact that Paix hasn't been given a shot in the halves for us is absolutely laughable when considering all the players we have tried before him.

Which one of the good teams throw 18/19 year Olds straight into starting spine positions?

I'm more getting across that he left us for cash and now that his form is blowing up, I can see the warriors having to invest heavily to keep him.

As of November 1 next year he'll be a free agent and Broncos can go back in for him if they want.

I just feel he may be a flight risk and therefore not really a long term option for the warriors unless they're willing to fork out serious cash to keep him. JT was loyal to the cows and was influential enough that they could put some lesser players around him, but they still only won 1 premiership across the 14-15yrs that he was there.

If he stays in NZ they will probably be forking out $700-$800k over 3-4yrs as early as 2023 in order to keep him, which might be a bit steep for a guy who's played half a season against men. Could even be more than that if they delay re-signing him to the back end of next year.

I think it will put a very short clock on their premiership window opportunity. They're putting some good forwards around him and now have SJ in the halves on the cheap, but if his salary blows up will they be able to keep talent around him and will he be able to deliver wins with lesser players... or will he just bail to get more cash or go to a better team at a lower price (Latrell style)

Looks to have the makings of a Ponga will he won't he situation ... where they're mostly a mid-tier team, but no real threat to the premiership and have a cloud constantly hanging over them that their star player could leave at any moment

I agree totally mate and this merry-go-round of young talent being nurtured by the club only to be lost is something that I, like many others, have whinged about for years. But the more I think about it and try to figure out the reasons why this happens with such regularity and we're forced to read catchlines like "Broncos lose young gun half to *******", the more convinced I become that it's like fighting a many-headed monster. There's no doubt that our player retention system has been redundant for years and staffed by people who were happy to rest on the fact that players wanted to come to the Broncos (buyers' market) but over recent times other forces have come into play. Can we consider the fact that the sports "press" have this thirst for inflating the egos of new talent by comparing them with the greats of the past, "this guy is the new Billy Slater" .. "so-and-so is from the same mold as Darren Lockyer" .. this, in turn, gives the player managers more ammo when contracts come up for renewal ... "worth x because he's been touted as a future Kangaroo" ... more press "Broncos cap stretched to breaking, set to lose emerging star" ... questions asked at coach interviews ... social media meltdowns and the wheel spins out of control. Then a young bloke like Dearden is packed off to Townsville with his pockets jingling only to produce little more than average performances to date. Rinse and repeat. Hope that made some kinda sense, thanks for listening.

We showed confidence in young players like never before in 2019 and 2020. You may want to have a look at where we finished up in those two seasons.

Exactly. Everyone forgets that injury forced the Roosters into blooding Walker this year. If Keary is fit there's every chance Walker spends the year playing lower grades.

We did not show enough confidence in Walsh, Walker and Dearden and that's ultimately why they left.

That's just rubbish. Dearden played plenty of games. Walker was too young to play and took a different offer and Walsh took the money and ran. There is a lot to criticise the club about, but the way they handled Walsh isn't one of them. You don't get an NRL spot handed to you on a plate. You have to earn it and Walsh took the offer where he didn't have to earn one, it was handed to him.

all of those players had actually played reserve grade footy prior to demanding big money and a starting spot.

in fact in Cameron Munsters case he had played a full season in the QLD cup in 2013, winning the rookie of the year award. in 2014 he basically played another full year of QLD cup (as he only played a single match for the Storm). so in effect, Munster had played 2 FULL seasons in the QLD cup prior to being a fixture in the Storm side, which is completely different to what Walsh wanted

I don't care what you think of my examples. Broncos have not been a chance of making the finals for years, therefore we should have been planning for the future years ago and from round 1 of this year. Isaako was never our long term fullback. Croft was never our long term 7. Milf was not our long term 6. They all started in the spine in round 1 and now look at where we are at.
