[Round 19, 2021] Panthers vs Broncos

I feel I'm going to do a @Huge here (and no one should ever do this) but anyway...

Croft - He tried his butt off and to be honest, I thought he got better the longer the game went along. You know what, there's a dummy half in there. He reminds me a lot of Hunt in many ways. Given the fear everyone has running at him as one of the widely known greatest defenders in the game (I jest on this point of course), his defense is good enough to defend in the middle. I wouldn't mind a hooker pressing up as that can set the speed of the defensive line. His first and second instincts are to run and he has a good pass on him, he just gets flustered when to throw it, he isn't alone there. I am also not saying I think we should be the ones to carry out this experiment but it is what it is, in my opinion, he should be a 9.

Flegler - There are no two ways about it, his first stint up until the sinbin was absolutely atrocious, like appallingly bad. After he came back though, he was absolutely immense. He was throwing tacklers off left, right and centre. He was stiffening up the middle and he was still going when the game was on the line. He is by no means the finished product but I keep saying it, he is so, so young for a prop and he is going to be elite, there is just too much talent and such a good work ethic for him not to be.

Hetherington - He was super, super impressive. Haas will get all the accolades and rightly so but I actually thought in many ways this might prove to be Kobe's breakout game. That try he got was pure strength and determination. He hits as hard as anyone in defense and does all the gritty clean up stuff a lot of our prima donnas don't want to do. He looked miles ahead of Turpin at hooker as well. We've got a player here!

Paix - Such a shame he got injured so early because he was looking every bit the hooker he has been threatening he will be in Q Cup. I just hope the injury isn't too serious because it cannot be overstated how much of a handbrake top 5 in the NRL said no one with any sense ever Turpin is.

I only caught the last 10mins, what happened to Turpin & Paix? Hetherington showed he is definitely not a 9.

Flegler is screwed, media saying it should have been a send off means the MRC will predictably overcompensate and rub him out for a long time.

Croft is garbage, might as well play a forward at HB, he doesn’t create anything.
Paix has a foot/ankle/leg injury or threat of one

Turpin I’m not sure, someone above wrote maybe concussed, didn’t have a great night and worked out better for the forwards in the end to have Kennedy + Bully on with Kobe at hooker

Hetherington looks like Damien Cook compared to Turpin. Paix was alright but picked up an ankle injury.

We desperately require a decent hooker. Elite would be better, but right now, I’d settle for merely competent.

Alas…

I think we would be the only team in the comp that doesn't have a fullback sweep to create an overlap.
Herbies never given the ball in a position to even think of passing to Oates.
Staggs doesn't get the ball enough, Gamble was screaming for it and croft dummied and cut back inside.
Paix and Hetheringtin looked alot better than Turpin.
Bullemor needs to be in the 17 every week, he could easily become Haas's partner in crime.
I thought Issako looked dangerous with the ball.
Nui isn't our fullback
Our attack is like watching under 11s.
It wasn’t that long ago when the only play we had was the fullback sweep.

I may be completely wrong but was Croft a manufactured half by Melbourne like Cronk and Hughes? I know he did play wing in schoolboy union.
But I agree with the Croft as a hooker much like hunt.

Flegler definitely has the physical potential to produce good attacking stats, but I dunno if you can take the stupid penalties and errors out of him. Can anyone think of many players throughout NRL history that stopped being penalty and error magnets after the junior days? I can't think of any right now.

I know it is because of the club he plays for but JWH.

BTW, while stats don't tell the full story, they do give a good indication.

Flegler: 16 runs for 147m; 34 tackles (3 missed) ... not too shabby, offered some good assistance in the go forward department to Haas (who finished with 182m)

50/50 on the Croft pass but that was definitely the wrong option by him.

He would have scored if he had just reached out. Bombed it.

I agree he should have held it but I don't know if he would have got there. Look at where he finishes up in relation to the line, he would had to have got the go go gadget arms going which would have given Edwards a decent play at the ball.

Pros: Haas, hetherington & Bullemor (should have permanent spot in this side) were easily our best and a shout out to Kennedy who I admit came up with several good offloads in a very tidy stint.

Cons: Gamble is hitting the wall now, Turpin‘s forward passes seem to be getting more frequent, Herbie isn’t a centre & Glenn is becoming a lot like Boyd surely he calls it.

Overall: happier than expected, great effort all round to get back in the game but the last few sets were frustrating, need to score and they consistently pass it to a forward for a hit up, fucking spread it! What was there to loose! Team was let down by the spine.

I await Huge’s analysis on Crofts tackling technique and overall success with eager anticipation

Want to know why Herbie has alot more runs then Staggs in basically every game, because unlike staggs him, Oates and Isaako they actually do the tough carries at the start of our sets, Staggs doesn't at all, he needs to get involved more.

I do agree though it looks like Herbie will be more effective on the wing but our team has a serious problem moving the ball that way its been like that all season except for the few times Kelly was there and then amazingly Herbie looked like a centre because he would get decent ball.

Croft wasn't half bad tonight for his standards but his instincts are mud he is way too small to constantly look to run first he gets absolutely folded.

How many on here actually watch what is going on?

Like Blaming herbie for being a ball hog when most of his carries are basically being a Forward on the early tackles of the sets, most times he has the option to pass to Oates it will almost certainly result in oates going over the touch line, our Ball movement on the left since Kelly has gone has been absolutely shocking, there is never cut out passes to move to that side fast unlike on the right. I would put some blame to Niu for that as well since he overtly favours the right as well.

The way we are now Herbie might as well replace Glenn at Second row because he will actually make meters, and be able to tackle.
