The reality is that Capewell isn't the player some fans thought he was. Compare his numbers to what he was producing at Penrith and there really isn't that much difference. If Brisbane had as much ball and opportunities Capes was able to enjoy at Penrith, he'd be thereabouts again.
Reportedly we had the option of signing Nico Hynes or Kurt Capewell and we chose Capewell...

Looking like yet another recruitment master-stroke from us again...

Jake Turpin - zero runs, zero metres. Zero kicks and zero kick metres.

35 tackles, 3 misses, 1x ineffective.

How is this acceptable to Kevin?
Great question, I lost faith in Kevin a couple of weeks ago, we don’t look any better outside of Arey.

I mean wtf?

I'm not on the Paix bandwagon either...

I do not understand why this club thinks it is acceptable to have the bloke who touches the ball the most out of anyone in the squad, be one of the least useful people on the field with the ball in hand...

How is that of any use to us as a side? Other sides are well aware of how much of threat Reynolds is and how little of a threat the rest of our spine is. Guess where they apply pressure?

Add the fact that week in week out we don't know who will be number 6 because no-one is locking the position down and Nui has been placed on notice by Kevin through the press that he needs to improve and we have no other recognised fullbacks in the club if he gets injured / suspended / continues to play like ass...

It's a disgraceful squad.

It's a strange one. Most teams look to have impact off the bench at hooker, but we are the opposite. We would probably be better starting with Paix/Walters, and then bringing on Turpin to keep our middle defence tight. At the moment, every time Turpin comes off along with our starting props, our middle defence gets exploited and that's the period of the game where we struggle to stay with the opposition. Most of our games are essentially lost in that period, and the damage is too large to recover from.

That's a fair point. Though I guess my thought process was that at this stage I'm not really concerned about having impact off the bench from our front rowers. Instead, I'm looking for two reliable props who can continue laying a platform and can continue getting us going forward when Haas and Carrigan are interchanged.

For far too long, that is the part of the game where we fall away from the opposition and start losing the yardage battle. The moment we struggle with our go forward, we start having to defend repeat sets, and that's where teams seem to pile on consecutive tries in quick concession.

But if we can have two starting quality forwards coming off the bench, we can stay on the front foot and get the team into position to let Reynolds use his kicking game to build pressure.

At the moment with our bench forwards, Reynolds can't pin the opposition down in their own end and he can't force drop outs since we struggle to get out of our own end.
Yeah that's right getting the balance right between the middles is key to not having those periods where we drop off and loose momentum.

Some very good signs there tonight. We were right in it for 60 odd minutes and with a bit more luck we could have stretched that till at least the 70' mark. Jensen and Kennedy both had good games with Jensen the better.

RK still went well aside from a dumb offload which fortunately didn't cost uus. Made up for it though with some great runs and the team's best tackler on the night , 32 and 2 misses, 94% tackle efficiency AND 3rd fastest play the balls. Good stuff. James was even worse than normal, shit 50 metres and 4 missed tackles.

Some poor misses tonight from Riki and Palasia led directly to tries when we were still in it.
Overall we had some good performances and we'll get better over the the next 3/4 of the year. Heading in the right direction.

You nailed it. Time to bring back Sydney and Brisbane based refs to even out and improve the current officiating. With a good profit last year there is no excuse why it can't be done.

They do that now.

Before the game I think myself, and I'd probably say most of BHQ were of the mind that we'd be well and truly thumped in this game. The scoreline does sort of reflect that but I think we went a lot better than expected. Though some of the points scored against us were laughable in terms of them being fair dinkum. For example, Luai holding Hetherington back to create a hole in our line was highlighted by the Ch 9 commentators. We all saw it at home too, yet the bunker and the ref somehow managed to miss it even with the help of replays. I mean FMD!!!

I said it last week and I'll say it again even the 50/50 calls always seem to go to the opposition side. If the commentators were really fair dinkum their analysis would pick this up, but each week all we get is crickets. How did they miss Cleary's cynical tackle on Billy Walters? What were the officials doing at the time? Staring into Nathan's beautiful eyes? They sure as hell were blinded to his shitfuckery in the tackle. Or maybe they couldn't bring themselves to penalise the golden child so he was quietly put on report after the event. The commentators quickly rush to mouth platitudes like " but it's not in his game" and I sit in front of the idiotbox and say "well it frikkin is in his game as he just did it FFS!"

And hellooo! No sign of a penalty for us though.

The stark contrast on how much time we had to clear the ruck and how long Penrith were allowed was another glaringly obvious anomaly.

I'm sick of seeing Penrith players riding on the backs of our players as they get up to play the ball. Yet nothing was said. Also, on the PTB. How many times did penrith players put the ball on the ground let go of it and then use both hands to push themselves to their feet? By the letter of the law this constitutes them losing control of the ball and also means there is no danger of them bobbling the ball as they try to play it fast. All they were doing was putting the ball down, getting up and walking over it. So there was perhaps maybe even three different reasons why this was an incorrect PTB, but ....crickets from the officials and the commentators.

We were missing Haas, Carrigan and Flegler in the forwards and Herbie (and Tesi for most of the game) in the backline. So we played with 16 men for most of the game. Despite this we had Penrith worried and if Staggs had held that put down we would have really rocked them. But surprise, surprise just when Penrith are beginning to wobble right on cue here comes a stack of 6 agains to march Penrith down the field.

Sure our defence should have done better, but they can only do so much before manufactured fatigue will see errors creep into their game.

I expected the loss, I mean we haven't won down there since 2009 despite sending teams led by Locky and co. What i didn't expect to see was how well our guys held up against the reigning premiers on their home patch despite having 1 out of 4 of our spine playing well and being without 5 of our top line players.

I think Kevvie and his coaching staff are improving the team. Are they better than the Siebold days? I can honestly say yes. Are they close to being a top tier side? Not at all. There is still so much work to be done for them to be consistently mistake free and strong enough to compensate for perceived bias officiating.

Will this current coaching team get them there? I tend to lean towards NO.

Kevvie needs a ruthless assistant that allows him to play the good cop bad cop scenario. And that assistant needs to have tactical nous that complements Kevvie's persistence.

Cameron Smith has to be headhunted and paid whatever it takes to get him onboard as without someone like him who has the utmost respect from players we will not progress to where we need to be. In addition, we will look a far more inviting proposition to up and coming elites who know they will be 'schooled' by one of the best.

Finally, Kevvie please stop 'cleaning' imaginary mess off the table during your presser. It screams nerves and incompetence.

We were on fire, then it all went to shit when Jake Turpin got replaced. Draw your own conclusions, but I think it's pretty obvious who our MVP is.
