POST GAME [Round 6, 2022] Panthers vs Broncos

I'm not on the Paix bandwagon either...

I do not understand why this club thinks it is acceptable to have the bloke who touches the ball the most out of anyone in the squad, be one of the least useful people on the field with the ball in hand...

How is that of any use to us as a side? Other sides are well aware of how much of threat Reynolds is and how little of a threat the rest of our spine is. Guess where they apply pressure?

Add the fact that week in week out we don't know who will be number 6 because no-one is locking the position down and Nui has been placed on notice by Kevin through the press that he needs to improve and we have no other recognised fullbacks in the club if he gets injured / suspended / continues to play like ass...

It's a disgraceful squad.
I've been saying this like a broken record: Turpin dances to Walters' tune. Blame the coach if you don't like his style.

We were on fire, then it all went to shit when Jake Turpin got replaced. Draw your own conclusions, but I think it's pretty obvious who our MVP is.
His defence is important, I think it shows that our system defensively is still not working as a team. It shows when someone like him comes off and they can’t cover for it.

Reynolds really stood up tonight.
Thought Cobbo looked much improved.
Was very impressed with Jensen too.
Staggs continued to build on last week, which was promising, but he can’t keep dropping the ball over the line.

I’d love to be as optimistic as some on here, but to me it really felt like we were only in it for as long as we were because Penrith was in 3rd gear… they were way off their best and completely cruising and towelled us up handily. I think our performance was commendable and brave given the players out but I think the first half was more or less a training run for Penrith.

Next week will be very telling.. if we’re really close to the class of the Roosters and Panthers then we should towel up the lowly Bulldogs.

I only watched the first half and was impressed with our efforts but it was still painfully obvious how weak our middle is. In attack Jensen seemed like the only one that was able to consistently isolate defenders and find his front.
In defence we barely made an impact and it felt like we were constantly scrambling which we did do well, but that wasn’t going to last for the whole match.

9 is probably our biggest problem, obviously along with 1 however Tesi showed very good glimpse last night and was something that he could build on.
Turpin is a tackling machine. Whether KW has directed him to forget attack and just defend, I'm not sure. Now that we have a smart/genuine 7, those directions wouldn't make much sense as it is probably the number one priority to get our halves good, quick ball. Both of which seem to be lacking imo.

Whilst we were all calling for Paix to take the reigns at 9, I've been pretty disappointed with what he has brought. He hasn't brought much more attack then Turpin and certainly isn't as solid in D. He got ran over last night for a penrith try. One thing Turpin deserves credit for is his defence and tackling technique.

I think its time for KW to start moving things in the spine. I'd be putting Billy in at 9, with Turpin at 14. Gamble at 6 to partner Reyno and Herbie at 1, at least until Tesi comes back. Im not sure if Pereira could play 1? He might be a good option also.

In the offseason there is no doubt that this club HAS to go looking for a 9 externally. If there become none available, look at England.
For mine it is our biggest issue and I cannot believe that we have let it get this far. Surely the coaching staff on game day or reviews can see what every fan can see.
The 8 is slipping away and if we all cast our minds back about 8 weeks all the talk out of the Broncos from the heirachy was "anything but a top 8 is a failure." I recall Ikin, Walters and Reyno all stating this. Time to do something about it, before we lose grip of the 8 completely.

Paix isn't the answer. He has another year on his contract. We should let him talk to other clubs.

Adam was great last night. Near the same class as Nathan (IMO a future immortal), but a different type of player. The bigger mismatch was at 5/8th. We have a stopgap there. Luai vs Walters, not even close.

Cobbo's wing play is improving by the week. He should stay there. Herbie should go to fullback. Then let him face the same scrutiny as Tesi. My prediction is we'll let him go to the Dolphins.

Maybe Payne would've made a difference defending in the middle. But our attacking fluidity was vastly improved by his absence. I'm tired of his pointless runs, no matter how many metres he makes. Nothing ever comes from them.

the Panthers were in 3rd gear, because we wouldn't let them get out f it.

it took a few leg ups and a sin bin for them to brake the shackles and our hearts

I really enjoyed watching the renaissance of Cook and then watching Turpin.

chalk and cheese
are we calling Cook the chalk now? Because Chalk and cheese are probably the best dummy half’s in the game

Coaching is our biggest problem.

I wonder what Jason Ryles is up to.

At the end of the first half (when players are tiring), the bunker awarded five unexplained six-agains to the Panthers. They also awarded two penalties which were unexplained. After one penalty in the Broncos quarter, the TV coverage showed to passages of play completely unrelated to the penalty. One didn't even know what it was four.

These six-agains swung the momentum of the game to Penrith (Brisbane were right in the game before this). It also gave the Panthers the huge psychological edge of a half-time lead, and tired out the Broncos players because of extra defence.

When Edwards and Palasia were sent to the bin for 10 minutes for slapping (even the commentators made fun of such a ruling), this of course had a greater affect on the already tired Brisbane defence.

Overall, just another case of match fixing by the NRL, who had already nobbled the Broncos through their bogus suspension of Brisbane's best player, Haas.

I probably see Jensen more as a starting prop after tonight, both him and Palasia are similar they lay a platform but they don't bring the impact. Maybe starting the game with Jensen, Palasia and Hass (one at 13) and bringing Hetherington, Flegs and Carrigan off the bench so the level doesn't drop.
I do think we’d be better served with 1 of Haas or Carrigan starting on the bench. I think their game time should overlap less.

As I said before the game, I was keen to see us play without either of them. I think our forwards played much better as a team and for the team. Reynolds was getting the ball where he wanted it and under far less pressure. Obviously couldn’t match the physicality with our back ups though and they eventually cracked.

Hopefully Haas and Patty stop trying to do it all themselves when they come back.

Not really because he's always played like that. Dolphins 2018 ran 28 times in 14 games. Gant was 122 times in 18 games.

It's not just about 'running' but being a threat out of dummy half gives time and space to everyone else- markers can't go- A defenders are held up- if you won't run at all then everyone just piles on your half back and flogs him.

Do you think what we were missing last night was Payne or Patty?

I kept thinking if we had to inject a million dollars into the team that played last night, it wouldn't be in the front row.

I thought Jake's service looked pretty sharp last night. Better than Corey's, who also didn't run, okay once.

Service is only part of your job. Attacking from hooker creates another point of attack and is needed.

It's not 1987 you can't just pass and make 42 tackles.

So not Kevvie's fault now?

If Kevvie wanted him to run, he'd be running. Same with Paix. Regardless of what they did at other clubs.
