The Dolphins discussion

Alrighty, so Redcliffe now looking something like:

1. (Herbie - hope not)
2. Lee
3. Lee
4. Jennings
5. Isaako
6. Katoa
7.
8. Bromwich (c)
9. Graham
10. Nicholls
11. Kaufusi
12. Bromwich
13.

14. Stone
15. Lemuelu
16. GIlbert

If they can someone to steer them around from somewhere, they are looking ok.

To be honest that team looks terrible. Hopefully for them some of those names are purely depth. There’s a good foundation but without a few high level or elite players it falls pretty flat.

By my count thats 15 players (not including Brenko). Half way there

Surely dolphins will also be looking to promote and flesh out the squad with some actual Redcliffe juniors won't they??

I mean every team has half a dozen 20yr olds on bargain basement deals to fill out the top 30... are they planning to promote some of the dolphins reserve grade guys or are they just going to be discarded now that their team is in the big time?

Are there any good ones in their immediate reserve grade teams that they might also be looking to bump up to the top 30?

The team the dolphins are building so far to me looks serviceable.

If there was a B grade less experienced coach running the show I'd be concerned for them but given its Wayne in charge i think what they have so far could make a decent showing. I would have thought they'd target some of those excess titans forwards who aren't getting much of a run in first grade.

They still need that big marquee signing though. If they can't get one until 2024 then next year might be a bit lean for them.

The PNG Hunters have announced a strategic pathways partnership with the Dolphins NRL franchise that will include participation in a full NRL pre-season for four young Papua New Guinean players.

This agreement will provide a genuine pathway for Papua New Guinean rugby league players beginning in the Digicel Cup, through to the Hunters and right into an NRL system.

The partnership is in alignment with the Hunters’ strategic plan to develop more Papua New Guinean players into the NRL competition by 2025.

Under the agreement, four Hunters’ players will attend a full pre-season with the Dolphins NRL squad, starting in 2023.

Of those four players, two will be selected by the Dolphins to stay on and train with their NRL squad for the remainder of the season.

If not selected to play for the Dolphins NRL side, those players will come back and play for the Hunters in the 2023 QRL’s Hostplus Cup.

PNG Hunters’ CEO Scott Barker said the partnership was a huge opportunity to develop the talents of Papua New Guinean players to NRL levels.

“I am extremely thankful that the Dolphins have recognised the pathway the Hunters can provide,” Barker said.

“We know there is a wealth of rugby league talent and potential within Papua New Guinea, and this is the next step in our mission to introduce that talent into the NRL.

“I am very excited with this partnership and the opportunities it will bring for Papua New Guinean players.”

Hunters’ Chairman Stan Joyce CSM said the partnership was another boost towards the goal of seeing more Papua New Guinean players in the NRL.

“On behalf of the SP PNG Hunters Board and Management, I’m really pleased to see this partnership come together,” Joyce said.

“This is a big step towards creating a genuine pathway for Papua New Guinean rugby league players into the NRL, something the Hunters will continue working tirelessly towards.”

Dolphins’ chief executive Terry Reader said the Dolphins recognised the talents of Papua New Guinean players and wanted the club to play a major role in developing them.

“Through previous visits to the country, we understand how passionate the entire nation of Papua New Guinea is about the game of rugby league,” Reader said.

“Our head coach Wayne Bennett has long admired the unique talent players from Papua New Guinea possess and the way they approach the game.

“We are very pleased to offer a pathway for player development that will open up opportunities for players from that country to succeed at the highest level of the game.”

Great move, it's minimal effort for hopefully a return- if you jag a player every couple of years you're laughing.

I tell you what, I've been watching most Super League games this year and the last game Hurrell played kind of continued to confirm my fears that he might really struggle in the faster paced NRL these days. He took an intercept and looked like he was running in wet cement. He got chased down in like 20-30m. That has to be concerning if you are a Redcliffe fan, he might well be a liability.

Lucky he isnt there yet. I've been saying it about him every time his name gets bought up, he's unfit. Tbf, Ashton is very quick and would chase down plenty of players quicker than Hurrell.

Did you watch that play? Hurrell was not moving man, I reckon Jarrod Wallace would have tracked him down in about 20 metres. I was shocked.

Yep, not saying he looked quick, just saying Ashton is capable of chasing down quicker players than Hurrell. He's not that much slower than the Foxx and thats after all his injuries. I reckon he would have been about the fastest player in the game without those.

Berrigan any relation to THE Berrigan?

The Dolpin's roster looks like an interesting one. They look to have recruited well, not knowing what numbers they have paid.. but a good mix of promising youth and veterans.

There is the issue of the spine.. but we know as Bronco's fans just how difficult it is to buy these quality players unless you are entrenched in the top 4

I can see emotion getting them over the line in a few games next year, and with the old goat in charge may even surprise with a run for the top 8!?

I remember watching the Warriors first game when they came into the league (was it ARL back then?).. feeling older....

Will be fun watching their first game! Might even look to be there in person at Dolphin stadium which is a great boutique stadium imo.

Marshall-King sucks. If he wasn't related to Benji I doubt he'd get a game.

If they signed Verrills however, that would be a great signing. I'd jettison Walters for Verrills if we had the chance.

edit: thought he was off contract, but appeared he extended last December.

Matterson pretty much had both feet out the door and was heading to the Dolphins. Now he's staying at the Eels after they came back with a 4 year deal.

Munster is going to turn down Dolphins and stay with Melbourne.

Very very few quality options within the next couple of years and frankly, if they aren't successful off the bat than they are going to struggle even more to attract quality players.

Probably Bennett's best bet is on November 1 get straight on the phone with Sam Walker and try to sell him his vision.
