Broncos have offered a two-year extension to Oates.

He needs to take a reported 200k pay cut to stay, but he will stay.

I'd love Oatesy to stay

just on the figures it sounds like the deal would be worth $350k a season based on the figures in the article (so take it with a grain of salt)

the article says that Oates is on an "estimated" $550k a season and would need to take a 200k per season pay cut

it is probably slightly over but he has been a great servant of the club and so no doubt part of his wage is also Going to be veteran allowance.

If you make 13 runs, and all of your ground is made with two that means 11 had no impact or for 79.40 seconds you didn't do much.

That's a quiet game. Coming back from injury and on the wing- where I think he's better at the moment than in the centres is all part of it but not an involved game.
That’s not what you said though, you said “Mead put him away”. If that’s putting someone away then put me in coach, I’m ready.

I think the club should limit the offer to 300k but 350k is in the range of his right value. Would've been happier with 12 months at a time, but 2 years isn't terrible when it's not big money.

He could easily go back to being an error prone idiot but it seems his turn around is genuine, he's been fantastic every game this year and was also very good at the back end of last year.

I have serious fears he can stay a first grade standard winger in 2024 give he's already slow, but as long as he doesn't get any slower it should work out to be a solid deal for the club.

It does allow us time to see what we've got coming through though. There aren't any gun wingers coming through that I'm aware of. We have forwards coming out of ears and a gun centre in Mariner but we are pretty light on for fullback and wing.

wouldnt be suprised if the oates offer of 2 years is also to keep arey happy. think he has stated a few times out of all the boys he gets along with oates the most outside of football.

as long as he stays in current form im happy for him to stay his runs out of our 20 have been huge for us this year.

Give Oates a 2y deal with a club option for a 3rd. That gets him to 30/31 where he'll definitely be cooked as a winger and off to SL/retirement. Hopefully gets the try record in that time as well (even tho Pearl was my childhood hero).

It's pointless. You can't force a player to stay against their will.
what are you on about?

a club option is simply, we can choose to re-sign you for another year for the same money. it forgoes the need to negotiate for a single year. who are we keeping against their will?

Think the whole process through.

I have and I'm still yet to work out what you're on about. A club option simply gives both club and player a chance to re-sign on the same terms for another year without the need to go through the sit down and everything else that goes with it.

If a player says, hey don't worry about the 3rd year, i'm leaving/retiring/off to become a beatnik, great. If they want to stay, great, no negotations to be had. I'm not sure I've seen a scenario in recent times where a club has forcefully exercised a club option to keep a player against their will. Not in this sport anyway - in others where there's trade or transfer value, yes it does.
