2017 Line-up

Elgey comes off contract at the same time as Taylor and has no previous affiliation with Broncos unlike Taylor. GC are also just as likely to not release him early next year... And to top it off hes's also had a major injury

Benji could come off the bench into the centres and Oates to second row maybe? I can't see him playing a whole game there. An article saying Oates was transitioning to 2RF this year. Maybe at the back end of the game as a finisher to do a lot of the kicking? Not sure that'd be worth the defensive liability...

I'd say Oates transition to the second row will start during the origin period. If QLD is fully fit he's no chance of cracking the side this year, Boyd, Slater, Inglis, Chambers, Gagai, Holmes.

i believe oates is only doing a 1yr extension then will re assess after that. he wants to move into the backrow but he will be limitied with su'a and gillett being the preferred long term options.

Why he so desperate to move into backrow? If he move to backrow, he will not play origin this year. What do you think? Is Oates had future in Broncos after next year.

Throw in Munster, O'Neil and Feldt as well. Depending on early season form, he could be behind several players. I don't think Slater is any chance of Origin though. By all reports he is going to be playing at 80% at best and He isn't a viable option really on the wing. Not when you have bigger bodies who are better defensively available.

its not so much about him being desperate to move in their, its morr about doubling or tripling his contract value.
being stuck on the wing wont pay the bills compared to a backrow option. he could easily demand $500k + a year in the backrow where as a continued winger he may even struggle to get half of that.
for a rival club he would be a big signing in the back row.. early to mid 20's with massive scope and upside

So you reckon there's a decent chance he walks in 2019? Because I completely agree with Su'A & Gillett being the top options for the back row moving forward.

He is a hugely talented wide running second rower. Losing him would be a massive blow.

The reason for the one year extension is because NRL keep fucking around with the salary cap and broncos had to lock him down for 2018 before someone comes in to try and poach him.

In 2018 the cap will be known and they will be able to work out a plan for his transition to the second row and a long term deal 3-4 yrs.

No way does anyone sign a long term deal without knowing how much they could earn. NRL are seriously risking the loss of players to other codes if they don't sort their shit out and finalise the cap... it's becoming beyond ridiculous

Didn't it just come out that his new contract will be around the 500k mark, is that because the Broncos are moving him there next year?

1 year deal at roughly $400k for 2018, he plans on being fully transitioned in to the back row by the end of 2018, so he can get a big pay day for 2019 onwards.

If oates moves into the back row he will have to go to the bench. Gillett,Sua and McGuire should be locked in surely.
