Hi
Thinking ahead to the future wondering about ideas for new rules or tweaks of current rules to make the game better to watch and safer for the players.
Maybe not all are gems but hopefully at least some are worth a go in end of season dead rubbers.
What annoys you most?
For me:
1) Sick of penalties inside the 20m with no consequence or an easy goal. How about a 2 minute penalty box for most guilty player to encourage going for a try.
2) Lack or inconsistent use of sin bin. If a player commits a professional foul in a try scoring situation either a penalty try if felt most likely (not absolutely certain) or a 5 minute sin bin. Everyone is too afraid to use a 10 minute. Instead of on report - if a dangerous enough tackle but not a send off then 5 min sin bin - why should the opposition next week get the benefit.
3) No reward for getting over the try line for the attacking team anymore. Used to be a new set. How about at least a free tackle a 5m restart.
4) Sickens me to see blood everywhere, then the player gets a quick towel free to bleed on anyone else. Did anyone ever hear of blood borne diseases? No known cases but why take the risk. Mandatory blood bins - no different to HIA for more than a speck. If player or trainer tries to hide it then judiciary for both.
5) Team losing a player or players due to HIA. If a player is lost due to HIA - 18th man can come on as a free interchange. To stop a young player being overworked or stuck as a HIA permanent replacement - limit 18th man to 90 mins a week of football (i.e. if they just played U21/lower grade) and can only do it once in every 3 or 4 games except origin or finals. To avoid abuse and protect players mandatory independent neurologist review after HIA fail and big fines and suspensions for players, club doctors and coaches if they abuse system one way or another.
6) Give players a chance to work off half their suspension points by community service + fines and clear the slate for minor stuff at the end of the season. I.e. 50 points = 50 hours of community service - players are paid a lot to play so let them do some restorative justice instead. Higher thresholds i.e. 200 points for rep games.
7) Salary cap concessions for clubs where a player is hurt in a rep game to cover reasonable costs of match payments for second tier replacement.
8) Rarely do I agree with Gould (IIRC) but stop displaying shot clock - if players can't work it out or get on with it then their fault.
9) Golden TRY, any penalty is a 2 minute exclusion.
10) Like the idea of the captain's challenge instead of the ref asking the bunker. 2 failed reviews to start, get another 2 on top second half and 1 for extra time. Takes the pressure off the refs.
