2019 Broncos Line-up

If Glenn goes then pray to jebus that gillets neck is fully healed. We are in desperate need for experienced leaders

Seriously, how did it take so long?!?
I’ve seen curdling milk put up more resistance than him.

Yep. The Titans were obviously looking for a flashy, skilful player to draw in their fickle crowds, but paying big dollars for nothing but froth was a dumb move. Very Gold Coast though.

1 Jamayne Isaako - The future.
2 Corey Oates
3 Darius Boyd - Best option at left centre defensively and reads the play well. Natural centre.
4 Jack Bird - Long term he’s a 13 or 6, right edge player, don’t think he will reach his best on the left.
5 James Roberts - Suits his game more imo, allows him to be more dominant
6 Kodi Nikorima
7 Anthony Milford
8 Matt Lodge
9 Andrew McCullough
10 Joe Ofahengaue
11 Tevita Pangai Junior
12 Matt Gillett
13 Josh McGuire

14 David Fifita
15 Payne Haas
16 Jaydn Su’A - Has mainly played right edge so TPJ starts who deserves it more anyway
17 Kotoni Staggs - Can cover any position

18 Sean O’Sullivan - Gun, just needs to improve his defence like Niko
19 George Fai
20 Patrick Carrigan
21 Jake Turpin

Assuming Glenn and Kahu are released to Titans.

We would definitely be better off with Jack Bird at 5/8 defensively on the right with Staggs at centre and the Jet on the wing.

I’d like to see Kodi and Milf get a chance to play behind that pack before moving Bird to 6 or bringing O’Sullivan.

Lodge and Ofahengaue are our best props and both should start. TPJ can play edge too which I think he should to allow Lodge and Joe O to start up front. Su’A will be coming back from injury to start the year anyways.

How would we be better off with Roberts on the wing?

He isn't a winger, he doesn't belong there. He's a player that needs to be getting involved and getting his hands on the ball as much as he can and linking up with players in the middle third. He can't do that on the wing. He's limited on the wing.

We would also need someone on the wing that's very reliable under the high ball.

Jake Clifford is a gun, SOS isn't close to him yet.

Roberts is pretty limited in the centres too. Can't hit holes or anything. Not a centre who particularly plays for his winger either. He's got the one thing he's good at, and that's getting around the outside of a player. It could work on the wing too.

Who’s creating the holes for Roberts?

Who’s creating the holes for Roberts?

No one. The holes in that area used by the second-rower to run lines, be it decoy or legit.

Having said that, Jimmy needs at least 10-15m of space to be effective I feel. I cannot remember the last time he’s hit the ball at pace. He almost seems to start on the back foot, get the ball and then try and put the foot down.

I don’t know if it’s just coz he’s getting swarmed in defence, but I haven’t seen him properly beat his opposite number without needing to just run around that whole edge. He’s rarely passing too because while he believes in his ability, he’s still getting caught by that defence and the play is breaking down

So in that sense, I can see why some people want him doing kick returns. I don’t think he has the finishing ability of Oates or Isaako though

I would love to see him in a deeper back line play. He is truely an awesome sight at full pelt. I sometimes wish he would drift a little more in field in attack. That speed or more importantly the accelleration would be nice against some tiring forwards.
I've noticed he is very effective around the 30 minute mark with his hit ups but I still feel it could be more effective if he was used on a pass hitting a hole than the dummy half scoots, but they are better than nothing.
With that pace and accelleration, even a small gap in defence becomes a major weakness to exploit.
I guess the problem is he struggles to find them and then goes missing. I would love to see him used in a second man play at the end of halves, running with his 2nd row.

I think it would be nice if we released the shackles a little more, which I think is what you're getting at. Gillette, Sua, Fifita and TPJ are all great offloaders could you imagine Roberts running off them out wide.

The TPJ offload to Staggs for his try on debut comes to mind. Imagine setting up similar plays for Roberts

This team is awful. Boyd played a handful of games at centre and then was moved because there was a huge weakness there with him often being found far too infield. The broncos claimed they moved him back to fullback because Isaako wasn't up to it. I disagree. A lot of tries were scored down Boyds side while he was centre. He just has no talent / strength.

I think you'll find that he got moved back to fullback because Isaako doesn't have any playmaking in his game (at least right now)

Wouldn’t mind seeing him on the end of some short balls. Niko has the sneaky sleight of hand that could exploit it but it would be hard to hide Roberts behind the play as the defence would always be looking for him.

Not sure how you've done it but you've completely forgotten how that situation went. And you sounded so confident.

Been thinking about the calls that we may have a mass exodus on our hands if Bennett leaves with the main players being Lodge, TPJ, Oates and Roberts.

I'm not so sure Oates will follow him, but that is based on nothing other than his comments about being a brissie boy now and wanting to be a one club player... he could chase the money now but appears to be set to take a new contract on. Not so sure about Roberts either he's lock down till what 2021 or 2022?? Bennett will potentially be retired by then so he'd only be leaving out of spite to the Broncos, potentially Bird would slot into his right center spot though.

I thought it'd be interesting to consider the forward pack without Lodge and TPJ who are serious chances of leaving within the next 12-24 months and it becomes pretty apparent that re-signing Offa becomes pretty vital as a contingency plan.

Second row depth is higher with Fifita, Sua and Gillett.

We've got Haas locked down long term and Carrigan and Fleger as middle backups, but they're super young so in the short term we'll need Offa to become a leader of the pack.

Given he effectively becomes a free agent as of November 1 we should be looking to lock him down as a priority before someone sneaks in under our noses.

Re-signing Carrigan becomes a huge priority as well... even if it is a 12 month extension to get him through to end of 2020. He could be lined up as our long term prop/lock by then

The Rabbitohs wouldn't take Roberts back. Even with Wayne there. They sacked him. Also If Lodge was to leave Brisbane it would be to go to Penrtih. Oates may leave if they offer him a second row spot but I wouldn't hold a grudge there at all. TPJ, I don't think he would go. He's at the Broncos because of Bennett, but he seems to have settled in well and has a good relationship with Broncos players.

It's hard to see the Rabbitohs / Wayne being able to take too many players when they have a lot of money tied up in their forwards as it is.

With all the talk of who follows Wayne....don't forget the salary cap

Souths need room to sign players so maybe 1 or 2 go but he's not taking half the team

And whoever goes, we will find a suitable replacement

I think Souths would have some room to take a forward or two given Crichton Clark and Farah are completely of the books. More concerned they get a Flegler or Carrigan than TPJ or Lodge. Looking at our whole foward pack, I prefer keeping Offa over TPJ or Lodge if push comes to shove. Offa is a big priority signing for next year.
