I believe someone has previously stated that Boyd's 4 year deal was a 2 year deal with a 2 year option in the club's favour. I wouldn't be shocked, especially based on last years performance if this is Boyd's final year. This would free up a lot of money, allowing an increase to Oates contract. I also think Oates would attract a similar type of third party to Boyd as they are both athletic backline players.

For me, seibold leaving Boyd as captain, something he clearly hasn't excelled at is another indicator that he has limited game time left in him.

I suspect you will feel differently this time next year. I understand why people are critical of his performance this year but next year will be different. This year was destroyed by injury and Wayne kept picking him when it was obvious his body and confidence were shot.

Right now he’s healthy and getting a proper preseason. Seibold’s gameplan will suit Boyd. In the backline it’s everything done at speed with lots of bodies in motion. The key to this tactic is having someone who can deliver the ball to the right person to get them into a gap or one on one at least. That’s Boyd’s strong suit.

If we’re lucky Jimmy might even start scoring tries because of what his teammates are doing rather than just individual brilliance.

Whilst he has shown poor form on the field, which equates to poor leadership on the field, he has been an amazing captain off the field throughout all this. His post match interviews are honest and accountable. He is always available to talk to the media. Talks like a real leader and appears calm and measured in what he says.

PLEASE NOTE: this does not mean i think he is an amazing captain. Just pointing out that off the field (50% of the captaincy role) he has actually excelled a lot more then probably anticipated. His on field form and leadership improved a little towards the end of the year, often leading the kick chase or defensive line om the first tackle but he needs to regain his form a lot more and really lead from the front attitude-wise to prove himself as a leader. Hope the hamstring improving makes for a continued inprovement in these areas

It’s definitely an interesting side mate but a bit week on the bench with only 1 prop.

Anthony Seibold assures Andrew McCullough of Broncos future
Andrew McCullough has been assured he is the Broncos’ long-term No. 9 under new coach Anthony Seibold, following reports Souths hooker Damien Cook was Brisbane-bound.
One of the first things Seibold did when he was officially named Brisbane’s coach for 2019 was to ring McCullough to put to bed claims he would bring Australian rake Cook with him from South Sydney.
Reports first emerged late last month that the Broncos had their sights on Cook, despite McCullough having three years left on his contract.
The Queensland hooker dismissed concerns around his future at the time, but did privately question whether there was any truth to the reports.
However, McCullough said he was finally given clarity on Sunday night when Seibold rang him to deliver the news that he viewed the 28-year-old as Brisbane’s No. 9 and would not chase Cook’s signature.
“Seibs has told me straight he wants me here,” McCullough said on Monday after his second training session under his new coach.

“I don’t know where all the other stuff comes from … it could be anything.
“You hear about it but I had another three years. You always want to know, that’s human nature for anyone.
“But it’s all hearsay. I’m happy in Brisbane, Seibs wants me here and I’m just trying to improve from last year.
“Everything’s out in the open, we move forward and we get on with it.”
McCullough also said he was not only happy to have clarity on his own future, but that of the whole club following the end of the coaching saga between Seibold and former Broncos mentor Wayne Bennett.
Seibold has wasted no time in putting the Broncos playing group to work since arriving in Brisbane on Monday morning, holding two training sessions within the space of 24 hours.

The Broncos first trained under the Rockhampton product on Monday at 1pm before hitting their old Red Hill field on Tuesday at 9.30am.
McCullough was the first player at training on Monday, arriving early alongside Seibold and his assistant coach Peter Gentle to talk tactics.
Seibold said upon his arrival that “the senior players are a big part of what I do as a coach and they’ll be allowed to have some responsibility within the program” and that was evident on Tuesday.
“The players are the ones out there playing so I think Seibs puts the ball in your court and makes you think about your role and how you can improve,” McCullough said.
“He was just picking my brain and vice versa about the way we should do things.”

The difference in Brisbane’s training under Seibold has also been immediately noticeable, given his philosophy around training harder than you would play in a game.
They have been mixing their conditioning drills with ball skills and defensive work, which has come earlier than it usually would in pre-season.
The Broncos have also been training at a higher intensity, which McCullough said has made an instant impact.
“I’ve certainly lost a bit of weight over the last couple of days,” he said.
“But it’s good. Variety is key. It needs to be (high intensity).
“There’s probably a nervous, sort of unknown vibe (at training) not having worked with Seibs and the rest of the coaching staff before.
“It’s finding out what they believe is the right thing to do and everyone getting on board with that and moving in the right direction.”

Totally agree, boyd was a scapegoat last year.

It’s understandable given senior players are so much a part of his plan. He said they are given responsibilities. Although we have a young side with huge potential, we are a tad down on senior player numbers with the loss of McGuire and Thaiday. We badly need Gillett to be fully fit and perhaps Glenn gets a reprieve after talk of him being forced out. Looking forward to better days ahead, even getting excited. We can talk about players and football again.

I actually think our team pretty much picks itself mostly if they are all fit. The only debatable positions imo are left center, lock and one back row position. The wild card for me is going to be Myles Taueli. Think he can really make an impact if he stays fit. Ideally, i still think we need TPJ on the bench for impact.

He has been very well utilized coming off the bench to play lock in the past.

With middles experience being a bit lacking next year he may get used in that role again with Sua and Gillett the starting second row.

All these variations look very strong. A few concerns.

Macca seems to be the only option at No.9. We all know his running game is non existent which could be a concern but now McGuire is gone and maybe Glenn as well, maybe a guy in middle making 40~50 tackles a game will be precisely what is needed.

That that end, it didn't really concern me until THAT last game. These young forwards all seem to have a very good attacking game but who will take McGuires place as the guy who perhaps doesn't offer much in attack but who doesn't stop working? The highly touted forwards went missing in the THAT last game.

Maybe Boyd can bounce back after being very poor last year. I read that apparently he was injured last year. I don't recall it. I recall a problem with his hammy from the year before but if an entire off season isn't enough time to repair his hamstring, he should retire. And he is still under contract for 3 more years! That was a nice piece of charity from Bennett to Boyd.

I only looked at the messages above this so I'm sure the problem with the lack of a playmaker has been brought up. Nikorima and Milford both seem to be excellent running 5/8s but more often than not, semi-useless when in the same team.

Bird. The lowest estimate of his salary is around 850k a season. What is he good for? An interchange utility on 850k + a season? A lock? Is he big enough? Center? Since extensively using his free Maccas card + getting older, I very much doubt he is fast enough or agile enough or has good enough footwork.

I was one of the most vocal is calling for Bennett not to be re-signed or even sacked. I still feel I was right but I think given salary cap constraints and the big money contracts of Boyd and Bird among others, next year will be the best chance before the squad goes downhill for 2 or 3 seasons from 2020.
