2020 Round 1 Line up

Two guys I’d like to see make their debut next year.

Jamil Hopoate and Tesi Niu.

Hopoate won't push his way into the pack we have put together, unless we have quite a few injuries.

Can't see Hopoate getting a run for us given how strong our Forward stocks are. Perhaps over Origin or if there was a major injury crisis but unfortunately for him the Broncos at the moment are ultra competitive for Forward positions.

I understand what you two are saying but you never know if we may need a different style of player in the middle during the year. Hopoate would bring something to our forward pack that we don't have in our 17 currently.

Paul Green is big on having different body shapes in his forward pack with different attributes.. So that the defence can't get used to tackling their forwards.

I think having someone like Hopoate on the bench at some stage and giving Carrigan or Flegler a rest for a couple of games would be smart.

Not saying he isn't a decent player, I just think the Broncos are not the club to be at if you're a Forward trying to crack the NRL. It's a huge log jam in our Forward Pack right now and we realistically probably need to shed one or two guys, not add to the mix.

He's also a fan of playing forwards with no lateral movement in the centres and paying overs for players clubs don't care if they lose and carrying on like it was a coup for the club.

We've lost Su'a, McGuire, Fensom, Tagataese etc. Gillett and Glenn won't be around forever too.

Hopoate is definitely physically ready for NRL, and I believe he has been preparing mentally for it too.. Otherwise he would have never earned a contract with us.

Haha I disagree with most things Green does to be honest.

His way of thinking about that particular subject I found interesting when I heard him explain it. It makes sense.

He was explaining his middle when they won the comp with Scott, Tamou and Taumalolo. Those three are very different styles of players to have to tackle continuously.

Hoppa and Niu are no chance barring a massive injury crisis.

Problem for Hoopa is his only real chance of getting in the team is back row, and he isnt very good there and we have heaps of talent. The Phins tried him there early in the year and he was bang average at best. They moved him back to lock and he was his usual excellent self. Problem is, he has Carrigan, TPJ or Joffa to contend with there as well. He has next to no chance.

1 Jamayne Isaako

5 Herbie Farnworth/Xavier Coates
6 Anthony Milford
7 Thomas Dearden/Brodie Croft
8 Matt Lodge
9 Jake Turpin
10 Payne Haas
11 David Fifita

15 Thomas Flegler
16 Joe Ofahengaue/Rhys Kennedy
17 Alex Glenn/Corey Oates

Honestly can't work out who will be our bench utility. Croft seems likely to sign and him and Dearden will be fighting for the 7. Paix is an option but I haven't seen enough of him. Te Maire Martin is off contract and could provide a spark. Issac Luke is past his prime but could definitely provide a Segeyaro-like impact for two games a year. If Isaako doesn't work out at fullback we should try Bird, with Coates on the wing and Farnworth at centre. I don't think we will keep Oates, but if Glenn leaves he can have the bench second row spot. We should have been giving a few of these players more of a go throughout 2019. Can't pick a captain either.. We need a signing or two, because our depth is going to be tested in 2020.

He probably isn't going to play Rugby League again and even if he does he's one bad head knock away from early retirement. Signing him is a big risk.

Yeah, it was a brain bleed wasn't it? I forgot.

Yeah it was. He's received good news as the bleed appears to be healing but he's still waiting on another scan to see if he can continue playing Rugby League.

Scary stuff, wouldn't blame him if he went and did something else.
