FOOTBALL 2023 FIFA WWC Discussion

The one thing I do worry about is the lack of rotation with the squad and the fact that we hardly made any subs against France and it went all the way to penalties while England’s game was finished in the first 90.

There were some very tired legs by the end of extra time against France.

I hope fatigue is not going to be a factor.

Has to be the biggest concern for sure, and it's a pretty short turnaround. They really need to take their chances and win it in regulation because if it goes to extra time again it's going to be tough for them.

In a major tournament, teams cant really use fatigue as an excuse. They are all fatigued unless they have blitzed their way though every game. Every team in the semi finals has played extra time at some point.

In all seriousness, i just cant get excited womens football and i've never managed to watch even half a game. Think its a pretty poor standard and dont pay much attention to it. I didnt even realise until today England won the Euros.

I get what you mean to an extent - I don't really follow the A League because of similar reasons. National team is diff tho regardless of gender and skill level. I think that's just a lot of Australians in general - will jump on any sport and support the team.

I don't watch a lot of football (mostly due to it not being conveniently available, in truth), but the quality of this tournament has really surprised me. And I don't think I've ever seen as clinical of a penalty shootout as that one the other night - that was something else, given the pressure of the situation. I kept expecting someone to spray one wide, but they just kept on banging them on target.

And the fatigue is not an excuse - just an observation. As you say, all the teams have played the same number of games - but not all the players, and rotations do matter. That said, I'm not aware of England's stats in this regard.

I watch every world cup pretty religiously. Don't watch a league because it's poo and I really have no emotional attachment. Would watch EPL but the times are horrible.

This world cup has been fun ASF though. The Matilda's are awesome.

It's clearly a few rungs below the men's world cup but I have an emotional attachment to it so it's fun.

Have you seen this ad Wolfie?

Keep in mind the Froggie women were one of the favorites to win as they have some real class.

The public holiday is fucked on a number of levels.
Firstly its a political stunt where anyone who opposes it is a ****.
Secondly it's being paid with other people's money, not just businesses but anyone who contracts, agency workers etc.
Third, there is **** all chance it would happen if it were mens sport.
This woke bullshit is going too far in this instance.

Why didn't we get a holiday for the Diamonds world Cup victory?
Where was Albo when they won. Not enough spotlight ?

I've loved every minute if the Matildas run so far. That shoot-out goes in my top 5 sporting memories if not top 2.
Loved seeing the kids in the grandstand link arms behind their backs mimicking the players .
Cheering them on like the rest of us.

Some of that isn't true - if the mens somehow made the WCF it would be fucking huge news and received similarly. This isn't a gender thing, it's an Australia punching way above their weight thing. The Diamonds are consistently at the top of their sport - the Matildas and Socceroos not so much.

Also woke bullshit lol. Think you're throwing in buzzwords that have no relevance.

Idc if its a political stunt or not a day off is a day off

You are kidding yourself mate there is no way a men's world cup victory gets a public holiday.
This Labor government, **** me, it's absolutely a gender thing.

Mate you are kidding yourself if you somehow think this is a gender issue. The men would definitely get the same treatment because it's the biggest sporting event outside the Olympics, and one we're traditionally rubbish in. Like I said, it's a punching above the weight thing.

And of course it's labor - if it was liberal government, they would expect you to work on the day of the apocalypse.

I'm glad you're enjoying the run though, the girls are doing us all proud. Let's hope we can stick it to the poms and create something really special.

Unfortunately we will never find out.
Will be interesting if Albo pushes for the day off if the don't win.

Hmmm who could he be appealing to by doing that. 🤔

Personally I don't really care if we get one or not, it doesn't change much for me.

But I think we should only get one if they win. Making the final isnt cause for one, it's a bit participation award in my eyes.
