Keep in mind the Froggie women were one of the favorites to win as they have some real class.

Yep, i've seen women players who are extremely talented. Individually i think they are as talented as a lot of the men, i just dont find the womens game particularly entertaining.

If we end up making the final, it will likely be the most watched team sporting event in Australian history (not sure if it will get Cathy Freeman numbers, but it will eclipse State of Origin, AFL/NRL rand finals, etc.). With the entire nation behind them (see the awesome game reactions around the country), a public holiday to celebrate a once in a lifetime event makes sense. Sure winning the Netball was nice, but it obviously doesn't have the same impact that football does.

People trying to make this about wokeness need to get off Fox/Sky news. We 100% would have had a public holiday if the men had won the world cup. If we can have a public holiday for the kings b-day, AFL grand final, etc. we can have one for this. Anyway its really up to the states, all Albo can do is ask them.

The QF surpassed all but Cathy Freeman according to figures. If we reached the final it could very well nudge that. That would be some statement.

and I was reading that those numbers don't even include all the people watching it in stadium's, bars, public viewing, etc.

7.2 million people tuned in for the penalty shootout against France and those numbers don't include Optus Sport viewers or people watching in public places.

An average of 4.17 million people tuned in for the match.

The number being thrown around for Freeman's run is 8.8 million.

I think if Matildas make the final, given how popular football is, that number is being beaten.

I'm not terribly fussed by the prospect of the public holiday, and honestly I don't think there should be one in Victoria for the AFL GF and especially the Melbourne Cup, given it's purely a celebration of animal cruelty for the sake of betting companies.

Public holiday makes zero difference to me but if the Socceroos somehow won the world cup it would be a crazy achievement that would warrant a public holiday. That would be a once in a century type win but they suck and they won't.

The Matilda's are actually good and have every chance of taking out the whole thing IMO.

In all seriousness, i just cant get excited womens football and i've never managed to watch even half a game. Think its a pretty poor standard and dont pay much attention to it. I didnt even realise until today England won the Euros.

It's still developing though, isn't it? It hasn't had the obscene amounts of money poured into it over countless decades that we've seen in the men's game.

Some of these countries playing in the World Cup would have had absolutely no funding or coverage, etc as little as five or so years ago.

From what I've seen, the quality has been steadily improving over the last few years. The only way it'll continue to increase is if people support it.

I love it when the country comes together to support a team like this. Come on you Tillies!

Holy shit, Spain take the lead late. This looked like it was going to be another game that went to extra time. Sweden scored just a couple of minutes prior to level the scores late and then Spain get the winner 94 seconds later.

Just 7 minutes of added time left in the game.

I think it's less about "woke bullshit" and more about capturing the mood of a nation.
If every time we celebrate the achievements of a woman or a group of women it's classed as "WoKe!1!!", that just seems to be inserting an agenda where it isn't needed imo. Stay angry though, if that helps your pearl clutching.

P.S Can't wait for the game, regardless of the outcome, I think they've done an awesome job! Go Matildas!

Love to see a breakdown of the numbers for that viewership figure, I would be confident that the number wouldn't have reached those levels if it didn't get to a penalty shootout.

Not saying Soccer is boring (well not to me it isn't) but I know of a lot of people who just can't get behind two teams going back and forth for an hour and a half without a goal being scored. However I will say that this game may have been watchable for that kind of fan because we did look like being the team that would score, for most of the game.

Not saying Soccer is boring (well not to me it isn't) but I know of a lot of people who just can't get behind two teams going back and forth for an hour and a half without a goal being scored. However I will say that this game may have been watchable for that kind of fan because we did look like being the team that would score, for most of the game.

Our house had the game on with only partial attention being paid for the majority of the game, with no one being big soccer fans. When it got close to the end and it was still 0-0 and the tension was rising, more eyes seemed to get glued to what was happening.
The Aussies definitely seemed the more likely during general play from what I saw. A couple of really big opportunities missed.

I love it because this team has united a nation.
I love it because some of these players are running on fumes having played every minute of every game but still keep going because that's what elite athletes do.
I hate the comments referring to isn't it good because they're women, what this will do for the women's movement. etc. Which have been about in the media.
There are plenty of reasons to love this team for me none of them are because they're women.

On a side note the Qld Gov has missed the chance to open the gabba and let the crowd watch on the big screen.
That would be a great way to celebrate the game but it's too hard apparently.
