"Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard"

He seems talented, may even be the best in his age group, but unless there is a dramatic change in his attitude, all the while in a new city in a new state mind you, I doubt we will regret this loss.
For a year maybe, perhaps even 2, but talent will only get you so far in elite sport. Heck, the last 10 years of our retention and recruitment is a testament to this. His attitude SCREAMS entitlement and poor drive.
What will he do when the newspapers say he is amazing? When he cops a season ending injury? When players target him? When he loses his team a game? When he faces hardship or form drops or criticism.

I watched a video of a game Walsh played in his debut year. Ennis said something along the lines of a once in a generation player who brisbane will rue losing for decades. A couple months ago it was debatable whether we wanted to swap him for a player who was 2 years out of the game after an aneurysm and was playing out of position (martin). Not saying I was on that side of the fence but that's certainly not once in a generation now is it? Talent comes, talent goes, attitude and effort persevere. I could give millions of examples in world sport yet fear of missing out continues to be a source of great delight for media and player managers alike...

Tyson Smoothy highlights:

I like a #9 who is a kicker .
I think Paix and Bill are gonna have some competition judging by the high lights .

I am also disappointed Smoothy isn't part of the 30. I know the Broncs have put all their eggs in the Mozer basket and hopefully that works out but he isn't ready yet, so would be nice to have another legit option at 9. I am also certainly not giving up on Paix, I really rate this kid and I think he is ready, I thought he was ready last year and was showing until injuries cruelled his season.

I was surprised at the time we let Tanah Boyd go to keep Paix, but Boyd hasn't really lived up to early expectations either. Still he's managed to get more games than Paix and Walters.

Boyd (22): 39 games, 5 tries, 23 goals, 1 field goal
Walters (28): 35 games, 4 tries
Paix (23): 29 games, 2 tries
Grant (24): 52 games, 15 tries
Mahoney (24): 101 games, 19 tries

Not comparing apples with apples .

Boyd played #6 as well as #9 last season .
Comparisons with Billy would be fairer .

IIRC Paix, Boyd and Dearden were all halves in the same intake. Boyd looked more like a utility out the three, I thought. He had a particularly impressive highlights reel, even moreso than Dearden's. Billy didn't arrive until last year.

Also on development:

You were comparing Boyd with Paix and William .

I said Boyd also played #6 . What I was trying to communicate is Boyd had opportunities in two positions . More like Billy than Corey Paix who couldn`t get in the starting 13 in his preferred position .

I was making an observation more than a point. At the time I thought Boyd might've had more mileage in him than Paix. I don't know if I was right in thinking that. He's been okay, but he hasn't really kicked on. Neither has Paix.

But maybe you're right: we need to talk about Billy. Over to you @Sproj

Too bad Walters wouldn’t even put him in the top 30.

Is that Kevin`s job ?
Or is that Simon Scanlan`s job ? He could still end up in the 30 yet if he impresses at training and in the trials I suspect .

You know that expression ? Play with the bull , you get the horns ?

New recruit Tristan Sailor, who already has a commerce degree and a BA (English literature and creative writing), has enrolled in a postgrad Juris Doctor of Law at Griffith University:

“I’d always had an interest in doing law. Then going through it … I saw how the process works and it piqued my interest. I was really invested in studying it, but after the verdict I had to think about whether I wanted to continue or do something else. It’s something that’s stayed with me from that. It’s something I could see myself doing afterwards. I like the way you can help people and advocate for them. I saw my barrister, the high-value morals and ethics he had, and how intelligent he was. I could see myself doing that.”
“I’ve loved the Broncos since I was a kid. Dad won a few grand finals here and there are photos of me as a little kid with him after they won a grand final. It’s always been in my blood. I’ve always been very fond of the Broncos. It’s been awesome to come in here. The strength record board is up in the gym and dad has still got one of the records. I think it’s the squat record because of his big bum. There’s a feeling of belonging here.”
“I’ve always loved reading. I ended up writing a novel for one of my classes. We had to write 20,000 words but I just kept writing. It was about a young guy that goes overseas and travels the world … a coming-of-age story. I was working as a barista in a bookstore cafe and doing construction labouring, which was really good. It gave me gratitude for football. It’s physical and taxing for 10 hours a day and showed you how lucky you are.”
“It was pretty crazy because the trial went three weeks longer than we anticipated. We didn’t know how long deliberations could take but we were confident. After an hour or so we got told they wanted us in, but we thought it was just a jury question. As we stepped in they said there was a verdict. I smiled at Mum and Dad because I knew they were struggling the most. When they said the decision was not guilty it was a big relief. I was all right, but Dad was bawling the loudest and Mum was obviously very upset too. It was just that relief. It didn’t really kick in until a couple of weeks after. You get into that mindset of powering through it. I couldn’t even process it at the time. It wasn’t until a couple of weeks later that I clicked into it and thought about what’s next. I could get on with life.”
“I didn’t know if I wanted to come back to footy straight away but the opportunity presented itself. I was a bit undecided at first because of the public scrutiny and media attention that comes with it. I saw mates of mine going really well in the NRL and debuting. I was super happy for them but it sparked that desire in me to try and get back in there. It’d be a massive achievement to play NRL for the Broncos, not even personally, but for my family and the people that supported me. To have dad’s name on the wall, winning grand finals here, the Broncos are such a prestigious club. To pull on the jersey at all is such a big achievement. It’s definitely something I’m aspiring to.”
“I don’t know how I dealt with it. Coming through footy, you have to be somewhat mentally strong to get through things. I felt like I dealt with it pretty well. I think about some of the young guys and how they might handle it. I deal with resilience quite well. Then there’s a public perception of you. That’s one of the harder things, it stays with you forever. You’ve got to be strong within yourself and ride the process out."
“I look at it in a way now that I’m here in Brisbane, have a new opportunity and have met so many nice friends. I’ve got two uni degrees under my belt and am doing a post-grad law degree. It was tough at times, but generally over the time I got to enjoy and experience a lot more things as well as regain my appreciation for the game as well. I believe everything happens for a reason. I look at where I am now and I’m happy.”
