2023 State of Origin Discussion

Because our forward pack dominated in game 3 last year and none of those guys deserve to be dropped based on a month of club stats

So you're leaving Christian Welch, David Fifita & Felise Kaufusi out of the side?

Big call mate.

Running meters arent the be all and end all, especially in Origin. Cronk summed it up, when you pick a Queenslander, the first things you look for is a player who revels in adversity and a player who can perform under the pump for the entire game. Thats why you will pick Welch if he is fit. You need the players who consistently do the 1 percenters.

I wouldn't be dropping three players from a winning side, no. Doubt Billy will either.

Leaving Capewell out would be a big call. His ability to shift to the centres last year pretty much won the series and with Ponga at fullback it is likely he will be needed again.

Kaufusi is prone to huge brain explosions. Last time he played we were pumped and he left us with 12 players on the field. And he only just got back from 4 weeks suspension (and in that game he made something like 4 errors and got suspended).

Welch is the most likely of the three. but I don't think he is any better than the other middle players we have

Spot on. Which is why, in my view, you pick Welch but you don't pick Fifita. Of course at his best you want him, but how often is he at his best?

Tbf to Fifita he's been really good so far this year. He's a lot more involved but he would have to keep that up for him to get close to playing for QLD.

Every single game, if you've been watching the footy. Fifita is in career best form, despite the media chatter around him not having a try this season. His work rate, defensive efforts, decision making and 1%ers have gone to a completely new level.

Apparently not LOL

No, I certainly am not masochistic enough to watch 80 minutes of Titans each week, I just watch Kayo's 20 min recaps. I haven't seen what you have, but it makes sense as those important things you mentioned would not be in the recaps too much.

Both pretty shit sides.

2 things you absolutely must have on your bench is cover for your 9 and edge back rowers, ideally you want a bloke that can cover both.

McInnes is actually a perfect utility for NSW if his form was a bit better.

I feel there is always a spot for an experimental spice up as a 17 when it comes to origin because of the fact you tend to have much higher quality forwards who can play bigger minutes than the odd club level team.

But with the HIA rules as they are that would be risky these days, that is why a Player like Capewell is soo valuable in Origin, he covers centre well on both sides of the field and delivers at this level.

I think Hammer has to be in the side as a Winger instead of Coates on the left as well with that view, if we get a fullback injury we can easily cover it with another fullback in very good form.

Adaptability is important, weather we go with Ponga or Walsh at 1 I think we would then have cover for basically every single position on the park, with both of them able to cover 6 or move Hunt there, with Cotter in the team you would also have another Hooker rotation option if you did that.

I don't think you need to pick a winger based on fullback cover when we have Munster at 6. He could easily slot to 1, with Hunt going to 6. Or you could go with Holmes/Cobbo to fullback.

You could but Hammer is a much better outside back on the left(rather then the right which he was used mostly last year)and with his form it seems a fair choice, and he is a much better option to cover fullback over weakening 6 to move Munster or using Holmes who hasn't played there for awhile now and Cobbo which would be very risky in Origin.

With that you can just move Holmes and Capewell over 1 and put in a bench 2nd rower, it covers soo much while keeping players in strong positions.

I think we would be weakening wing to bring Hammer in for a back up option. I'd take a few people ahead of Hammer at wing.

From those that are fit and the form this year I could name maybe 1, outside of moving Holmes there.

I'd take Oates, Coates, Cobbo and Tuilagi ahead of him. Specialist wingers who are better at making the hard carries needed in Origin.

Oates is injured thus not fit(If he was he would be my first choice), Cobbo will almost certainly be on the otherside, and Coates and Tuilagi are hardly players good at making hard meters despite the bodies they have, Tuilagi hasn't exactly been in good form either.
