Ponga has proved he's the Queensland fullback until proven otherwise.
I have loved Queensland's way of blooding young (earmarked long term) spine players. 14th man, forced to play in the middle for enough time to see if they can hack it. I'm not sure if they will be able to do that now that Smith is not in the team (and we need a 2-hooker rotation) but it applies the blowtorch in the perfect way.
Cronk handled it quietly and efficiently, however he was apparently a hooker in his younger days, so time in the middle wasn't exactly foreign to him. I had no idea how Ponga would go, as far as I know he'd never played anywhere in the middle. and his skills, which are speed, elusiveness, and ball-playing, are mostly irrelevant when filling in as a "run hard and tackle hard" middle (with no need for ball-playing). But he blew me away with his no-nonsense grit work. He never looked out of place for even a moment, he made his tackles and he ran like a fucking demon in to the meat of the defence and didn't bat an eyelid. He earned my respect then and there, I don't care how he goes for the Knights but he's a life Maroon for that, and he personified the concept that talent means nothing in Origin, it's your mental fortitude.
Reece Walsh, if even considered for Origin, needs that same test. After the Canberra game I'm not sold that he is ready, as when the blowtorch was applied, he fell short. Could be handle an initiation in the middle?
