2024 pre-season discussion: Pre-season Premiers

Hetherington starting and snapping blokes with Willison coming on to step up the pace actually sounds like a smart plan. Let's not forget too that X-man is both inexperienced and injury prone, it is wise to not put all the eggs in that basket even though his potential is scary.

Mariner will be in the team round 1, I am sure of that BUT I also like that no one other than the big guys have positions sewn up. Competition for spots is important.
Doesn't Kobe normally come on to rest Patty?

He does and so obviously that would need to be considered as well. I am not sure what the best option would be in this case if Kobe is starting but maybe this could be what revitalises Taupau.

If Kobe's to start, it would be at lock with Patty at prop, but I'd be surprised to see that happen.

The more I try to move pieces around the board I keep coming back to Oates as the Joker. But I don't really believe he's the answer. Sure, we could carry him or Mariner on the bench, and then switch one of the backs (Cobbo/Staggs/Oates) into the back row but it's not smart footy to waste a fresh player on the wing. We need someone with a bit of pace on the bench, but they'll usually find themselves closer to the middle.

The prevailing propositions leave us completely exposed should a back go down, which is as good as guaranteed at some point. Smoothy will get swapped out for Mozer at some point, but that won't solve anything.

Kevvie must have a plan, otherwise he wouldn't have let Capewell leave. Whatever it is I can't see it yet.

My ideal prop rotation at this point is probably:

8. Haas
10. Jensen/Baker

15. Hetherington
16. Willison
17. Baker/Jensen
Yeah I would rather Mariner be on the wing it’s not end of the world stuff but when it comes to the forward pack if it ain’t this and Hunt and Taupau haven’t showed anything in pre-season games to suggest otherwise I will be pretty disappointed. That pack is perfectly balanced in my opinion. The only concern is second row but Willison, Baker and Carrigan can definitely cover second row and Hetho should be training there as well so he is capable. In saying that I think it should be expected that Piakura plays 80. Of you aren’t willing to work hard enough to get your fitness to 80 than you don’t deserve the spot.

What happens when Kotoni goes off with a broken toenail: who shifts where?

I actually hear that this would make him stay out and play better...he has a thing for toes.
Speaking of which, Billy is staying on his:

“Competition brings out the best footy in you. I know I can’t string one or two bad games together, or I’ll be finding myself out of the team. It’s keeping me on my toes."
“I feel like I’ve got a lot of good footy left in me. Hopefully I can continue on from last year and build on my game.”
“I’m not sure what Kevvie’s plans are. Whoever works the hardest and plays the best in trials will probably get first crack. It’s been good for Mozer to get a full year in Cup and playing against men. He’s only young. He’s still got a lot to go and to learn but he’s looking very promising. It’s the case with everyone in the squad."
"You can’t get too comfortable in your position. You’ve got to be playing good football or there’s someone young and talented ready to take your spot. We’ve seen in previous teams, and even in our team, sometimes when you give your spot up, it’s hard to get back. You don’t want to be in that position where you have to give your spot up to someone else.”

He's just toeing the company line.

Controversial TPJ: Sign him up on a cheap deal. Keep him playing reggies make him buy in. Hes 27/28. If hes going to mature at any point - it will be around this age. He wanted to be a superstar before playing like one. Bulldogs would have been a huge learning curve for him. If he doesn't, no big deal, no contract next year.
