2024 pre-season discussion: Pre-season Premiers

Does it really matter?

Kev might be a larrikin but he's not an idiot, he would have seen his shit attitude first hand. I don't know Kev but he comes across as the kind of guy who would have been prepared to give him every opportunity to prove he wasn't a bad influence around the group.
Not only that but sifting out the weevils was his first priority.

It's not that surprising that Patty is backing his mate Tevita. The fans' and new coaches' opinions on a player are going to be very different to that of a teammate. They have spent a tonne of time with each other and I believe Patty is genuine in what he is saying here.

Doesn't mean he is right though. I'm sure plenty of us have vouched for mates that maybe didn't deserve it. It's pretty easy to look past your mates' flaws and Patty knows a bit about that considering how close he is with Haas.

It wouldn't be surprising regardless of their friendship.

Players don't come out and trash talk in the media, occasionally the odd inexperienced player may speak his mind but that usually results in a bit of media training and they don't do that again.

They could hate each other and Patty would still be saying something like that. What coaches and players say in the media and what they genuinely believe to be truth are worlds apart, in my opinion.

A source close to the club:
"Tevita's a good person, like a good bloke but I don’t think he’s a good footballer. He’s not the best footballer but he’s alright. I feel like he’s just a good person but I don’t reckon he’s a footballer. Even though he experienced footy, been through a grand final and all that, but I feel like he’s not a footballer. But he’s a good person, a good bloke and does a lot for the club. But the way he plays is a bit weird, I guess. He’s a good person though. He’s an alright footballer."

If Badel gets his hands on that it will be on the back page tomorrow.

My brain hurt from reading that lol. Was it from Cobbo?

There is no right price for a corrosive influence.
Getting rid of him at the time was absolutely the right thing to do. Taking him now if he’s crawling back, on a low salary and everyone who knows him at the club, far better than we do, are confident he’ll be a positive addition then I’m not against it.

I have faith in Kev, Dave, Reyno, and Patty to make the judgement call and to keep him in line if they do feel they can.

I’m not as emotional a fan as some, I’m more pragmatic. You are in a luxurious position if you have our pack and can afford to play a fresh TPJ off the bench.

The only way I'd consider him is if he was willing to play 10+ qld cup games before being considered for selection, and he was on a minimum wage....
I wouldn't let him train with the main team until he proved himself a consistent performer, particularly defensively and his attitude in games for at least 5 or 6 weeks in a row as well.

This minimum wage ?
Don`t the NRL have rule about how much a rep player must be paid ?
Or does his retirement void that ?

Not sure.

But I think everyone is on the same page that the conversation is only worth having if he is on minimum wage or just above.

The whole thing is just unlikely in general. I would honestly be very surprised if he managed to sign with us

I think 400k and under would be a pretty good deal. 2 year contract

The NRL won't allow him to sign for minimum wage. The retirement wouldn't void anything because he hasn't been out of the game long enough.

They go by what his current market value would be if he was still an NRL player. And given he played rep footy last year and was on 750k at the Dogs, it's wishful thinking to think we could get him for minimum wage.

Let's put aside his bad attitude, why would he come to us on minimum wage? He already won a comp at Penrith. That can't be the reason.

There is surely a club out there prepared to offer more than the minimum wage.
