AFL & NRL Asked to take mid season break during World Cup

That's actually the point I'm arguing against mal. Why block the AFL and NRL when they aren't going to be upstaging the World Cup at all?

I don't care so much if the MCG, ANZ, Suncorp etc are off limits for the duration of the tournament. But blocking rival football codes altogether will do more harm than good for soccer's popularity locally. It really is in their best interests to leave the AFL and NRL running throughout that period.

Off the top of my head I can only assume refitting sponsorship badges all over the stadium 2-3 times a week, repainting of fields, degredation of fields based to other sports playing on it etc.

FIFA is very strict on these rules, any of the World Cup qualifiers hosted in Australia are not actually allowed to be played at "Suncorp Stadium" but is to be called "Lang Park".

I don't see what all the hoorah is about, I understand that there will be their prospective losses for NRL and AFL but if the FFA compensate accordingly I don't understand what the big issue is. To me it's more just a "My dick is bigger than yours" campaign. Australia will benefit through tourism boosts (both pre, during and post World Cup), Rugby League and AFL will have better facilities and higher capacity stadiums at the expensive of the FFA & Government.

Honestly, I think with the majority of people on here complaining about it all is because your beloved sport taking a backset for a few months.. Like seriously, what's a few months without league when you will be enjoying it for years and years to come. Take it on the chin and embrace our sporting culture as a whole. You should be celebrating being involved in such a massive event, it's not just the stadiums that have the atmosphere, its the streets, the people, the pubs that have the vibe through such a sporting event.

Love it or hate it, if we had a World Cup I have a feeling yo ucouldnt resist being taken in by the hype and the atmosphere around Australia. Again, Embrace it.

It pisses me off that we must miss out on our Rugby League fix just so a game i have no interest in at all can be played here.

Not arguing against how big it would be for Aus. And I'd probably even go to a match just to say that I've done it. But if they lock out NRL and AFL altogether - and as far as I understand it, no rival codes are allowed to play in a host city during the tournament - I'm going to resent soccer for it. And I'm not the only person who's going to feel that way. Like seriously, what is the harm of allowing the NRL to play at suburban grounds and grounds not used by the World Cup?

Well said mal.

You mean the same hype when the Aussies made the last one? Because there were still plenty of people that didn't give a rats.

It's all very well saying shit like putting NRL and AFL off for a few months is no big deal. But this is coming from fans of soccer.

Why should we, people who put League before any other game, have to bend over backwards just because there are a few soccer fans in our country that want the world cup?

Did the fans who have no interest in league jump on for the League World Cup? i know plenty of soccer fans who didnt give a crap.

And I'm sure there are plenty of people who don't give a rats about League either but that's not what it's about. There was MASSIVE hype, so I dont know what bubble you were living in. People I know who HATE football were getting involved and loving every second of the journey the socceroos went through in Germany. Thousands of people rocked up to Fed. Square in Melbourne to take part of the festivities in the early morning hours, much the same turned up to Park Rd in Brisbane. Games much closer to home will return far more support from both lovers and haters alike. Pubs were packed surrounding the projectors when Australia were playing (even when other countries were). We are a patriotic nation when it comes to sport whether it be lawn bowls or football people will cheer for us regardless of their sporting tastes.

My opinion is coming from someone who supports both League and Football so I would go as far to say there is limited bias in my opinion.

Why should we, people who put League before any other game, have to bend over backwards just because there are a few soccer fans in our country that want the world cup?

Because one would like to assume that League fans arn't a bunch of selfish twats.

id be happy to halt league for soccer, If they do the same when Australia host a massive league event.

If it's required they do, I'd hope the FFA did.

Yes, well with their massive crowds, cancelling a few of their games his hardly going to hurt the bottom line.

Just because Australia has a few bandwagon jumpers, is no reason to stop the two biggest sports in the country, that have genuine, and dedicated fans.

League and AFL are arguably Australias biggest sports, and certainly ahead of soccer by a long way. I don't see this changing significantly by the time 2018/2022 rolls around so I feel these requirements will only alienate people more. I don't see how it's fair in any way that either code should stop their league for a whole season as some people suggest, that's frigging insane. 8 weeks is even ridiculous. At the end of the day, FIFA are just greedy and demanding more than what is fair and logical. There is no reason why AFL and league teams shouldn't be allowed to play at an alternative venue for the 8 weeks the World Cup is on.

Rofl - ratting on A-league crowds... funny.

Average Crowd for A league in 07/08 Season- 14,610 , 08/09- 12,180
Average Crowd for NRL in 07 Season - 15,750 , 08 Season - 16,051

Big difference there Nashy [icon_drun ... so going by your theory, cancelling a few NRL games isn't exactly going to hurt the 'bottom line'. But alas we need to take into account sponsorship, tv rights etc where yes, NRL would suffer more financially than A-League. But again, that's why they invented this nifty little thing called compensation. Which the FFA has said they will happily do.

Bandwagoners? Like the Origin crowds? You think alot of them actually watch the NRL? There are ALOT of genuine football fans out there Nashy if you are actually willing to look outside of your aforementioned bubble.

Maybe they could play all the NRL games in this period over in Kiwiland.

A-league crowds this season are poo. I think it could well be because the trend has worn off for a lot of people. I know it has for me (for the a-league anyway). I love football and consider it equal with league in terms of my favourite sport but the A-league is just crap.
