AFL & NRL Asked to take mid season break during World Cup

Ah I get it now. I wonder if there is still a fine enforceable if someone calls it Lang Park - could be a chance for a profit [icon_lol1.

Pretty sure any fines only applied to Broncos (or Queensland players during Origin time) who called it Lang Park

I find it funny, because if there was a league world cup that required the A-league and Union to shift for a few weeks everyone would be like all for it.. haha

2008?

Noone was forced to shift i dont think.

I love football but I think bringing the world cup here is just ridiculous at this stage. It almost seems like nobody thought ahead before making the bid for it.

It'd be fine if there was cooperation from all parties involved, but there's not (at this stage). If the NRL and AFL were willing to have ridiculously short seasons or postpone altogether and the compensation wouldn't cost too much then there'd be no drama.

But if Australia have put their bid to FIFA on the assumption that they will reach this kind of agreement, then yes, they've put the cart before the horse and will look like dickheads.

I am a bit the same mate, I do want one here eventually but at this point we don't have the stadia and building it right now just for the World Cup seems a little drastic to me. Having said that I will celebrate like a crazy man if we won rights to either.

+1

Isn't there a FIFA requirement to play WC games in minimum 70,000 seat stadiums?

Anyways, I wouldn't mind taking the Bronco's back to QEII for a season, throw some money at it to bring in the north south and east stands, nothing flash, no roof etc. We'd have HEAPS of rectangular stadiums in AU by then that will not meet the 70k standard, AFL on the other hand may have to take their games to local school ovals. Hell, there's rumours of a +80k PAX multi purpose stadium for over the Mayne rail yards, maybe not for 2018, but 2022 a real goer.

Yep, good points from all the bogans on Insular HQ...If they were true.

in 2006 The Revenue from Sponsorship & Marketing alone totalled 2.6 Billion dollars.

Financial disaster indeed.

2.6 Billion dollars - Upgrades - Sponsorship Repayments - Compensation = ???

That isn't including revenue from Merchandise, Attendance of matches or tourism created as a result of people travelling to the country either.

Yes, but the AFL are already floating the notion of $500 million compensation. The NRL haven't named a figure yet. But conceivably that'd be a $1 billion chunk right there.

There'd be at LEAST $1 billion in stadium and infrastructure upgrades.

And then the ongoing cost of maintaining and running those big MOFO stadiums FIFA would make us build that rarely get filled.

Yes. Disaster.

I honestly would love for the World Cup comes to Australia. But not at the expense of local sports. Let the NRL and AFL continue to run during the WC. The soccer will still get huge crowds of people from overseas and curious locals who want to have a look, while the fans of the AFL and NRL still get to see what they want. The alternative of shutting down the local codes is really just breeding discontent and resentment amongst footy fans.

Look at it this way - if I have to go eight weeks without footy as a direct result of Soccer, I'm going to hate soccer as a result. But if the footy is still running, I'm happy, and when my team has a bye I may just saunter on down to the closest WC match for a look. Everybody wins.

Don't forget AU wide the +20 billion in transport infrastructure, +5 billion in extra hotels/accom, +5 billion in airport upgrades, who knows how much the power, water and communications will be required to spend by then also...

Attendance figure for 2006 = 3,353,655, so assume only a 3rd of that are tourists, thats still 1.1 million people to get around the place, feed, sleep.
