AFL & NRL Asked to take mid season break during World Cup

And the papers "Bad Boy Nrl causes Australia to lose World Cup Bid"

Currently Australia fall so far short of FIFA's hosting requirements it's laughable. The amount of money needed to build/upgrade stadiums and possibly compensate other football codes will be farken enormous.

Maybe a "We will upgrade your stadiums for us to use during the world cup, if you halt your matches"

I think it's just the NRL saying "OK, we reject your first offer, come back to us with something different". The AFL are saying similar things. They're saying they can't go without the MCG for 16 weeks, so at the moment their only option would be to cancel the season - which would cost hundreds of millions of dollars...hinting that they'd want to be compensated for that.

As Scotty said, there's already going to be hundreds of millions, possibly over a billion dollars needed to upgrade venues in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth to meet the requirements FIFA have. Add to that compensation like this for the AFL and NRL...it's financially unviable.

There's no way the soccer world cup will bring in $2 billion+ in revenue to Australia to pay for the bid. It'd be a financial disaster.

There's going to have to be a bit of give and take from FIFA, even reducing the amount of time before the world cup they need to secure venues, or else it's just not going to happen.

Wow, didn't know so many people on here knew the ins and outs of our bid and its financial effects. icon_smile

I'm all for it - bring the Cup to OZ. I'll be there amongst it for sure.

Just to outline some requirements by FIFA:
9-12 stadiums. No more than 2 per city, all must be a minimum of 40,000-45,000 capacity, one must be a minimum capacity of 60,000 for the final (thats no problem obviously). There is also to be no advertising on on stadiums and there are requirements for press seating and camera platforms. I'm pretty sure only about 4 stadiums currently meet these needs.

Pretty big task if you ask me.

Actually. Advertising wise, I think QEII stadium is the only one in Aussie that doesn't have a sponsor. Cause it's shit.

So apart from the money to NRL and the AFL. How much goes to Telstra, Suncorp, ANZ etc. Plus all of the NRL and AFL individual club sponsors that lose out on advertising because of their team not playing, or getting on TV?

..Most of you will be dead anyway, so.. no use fighting about it. lawl.

By the time Australia hosts a soccer world cup? Very likely Bannermania :P Won't happen in my lifetime.

Is that negotiable? Didn't Germany have this one in 2006?

I am pretty sure it was still referred to as Allianz Arena back then but I could be wrong. Or are you referring to inside the ground?

I'm referring to what the Ground is to be called, I should have worded that better sorry. For example Suncorp stadium would have to be called Lang Park. The Allianz Arena was referred to as "FIFA World Cup Stadium Munich" in 2006.

Ah I get it now. I wonder if there is still a fine enforceable if someone calls it Lang Park - could be a chance for a profit [icon_lol1.

So what's the big fuss over stadia names Scotty. Wouldn't it just be a task of simply changing the name of all the stadiums which are under sponsorship in the country ala Germany 2006?

As Jeb alludes to, that is but one example. I'd say every stadium in 2006 is/was under name rights sponsorship.

The rest though, is extremely challenging.

It isn't a big deal, I was just outlining it as one of the many requirements set by fifa to host the WC. Some of them we meet comfortably, but for the most part, it's going to be an uphill battle if Australia are to host it.

I very much agree. It's very ambitious, somewhat unrealistic and a little cowboy like if you ask me.
