Signing Seibold to a 5 year deal after 1 good season at Souths is like marrying the first chick you shag. It's time for the broncos to wet their end with another coach.
Thinking about it now, a part of the reason why they went hard after Seibs when it was clear Bellamy wasn’t leaving Melbourne, is they wanted a coach that had ties to the club which Seibold had in being a former player here. It makes sense as besides Wayne, the only coaches we have had were all assistant coach or under 20’s graduates in Henjak and Griffin. I think they are trying to follow the Manly mantra of having someone with their DNA to lead the club because they believe that’s what would connect with the playing group.
If that is the case, Madge was never going to get the job full stop. And I reckon with the failings of the previous 2 coaches that came up through the assistant roles, they probably wanted to go a different route and recruit a coach for outside the clubs walls which would have ruled Demetrious out as well. So it was probably always a 2 man race between Seibold and Walters.
So if they wanted a coach out there that would fit that club DNA criteria, Bellamy, Walters, Seibold or Demetrious were their options. And obviously Seibold was always going to be the front runner there once Bellamy was ruled out considering he was the only one with any NRL head coaching experience and had just won the Dally M coach of the year in his rookie season.
So realistically, without the benefit of hindsight, signing Seibold wasn’t a bad choice. Signing him to a 5 year deal with an option in his favour for a 6th whilst sacking a club legend a year early in the process who made the club what it is what was the wrong move. That would be like Manchester United sacking Fergie a year early so they could bring in David Moyes.
