Meh, literally no surprises whatsoever.

I have a bad feeling Cummins is going to be an extremely conservative and safe captain. Hopefully Clarke can have something to do with him and show him the ways he did things.

Either that or he will just be the public face and Smith will be the real captain on field.

I think Smith will do a lot of "advising" .
He will need to be more subtle when doing it though . As it didn`t look good when he was making field changes when standing at slip next to Paine .

Unfortunately, Smith was an average captain.

He was captaining some really average teams to be fair.
And he was doing so in an average way, I think he often made poor bowling changes and never really had command of the game situation without a bat in his hand. I don't really judge a captain on his results exclusively, I still think Stephen Fleming is the best captain I've seen, and his results weren't great.

To be fair though, we aren't comparing him to Fleming, we're comparing him to Cummins and Paine. Cummins is an unknown and Paine was absolutely horrid with his on field captaincy.

I was comparing to any captain. We can't really compare him at all to Cummins, as he hasn't captained at Test level yet, and he was similar to Paine, which is average.

Jimmy Anderson out for the first test.

Surely just making sure he doesn't break before Adelaide, to get a win there they really need him to fire.

You are probably right but in this day and age their aren't too many captains who are anything above average.

It absolutely made him a better player though that in itself probably won us more games than we would have won if someone else was given the captaincy.

An average captain who won or drew 70% of his matches at test level. Not to mention carried the team on his bat whilst he was captain too. 53% win record in tests is pretty decent for an "average" captain
