Ashes Discussion

In India, Lyon averages 30.58. In Asia that average drops to 31.24. In Sri Lanka he averages 33.58.

Yasir Shah, by comparison, averaged 19.33 in Sri Lanka and 25.39 in Asia. Didn't play in India but in the UAE he averaged 24.56. In those same conditions Lyon averaged 53.80.

I could pull up any of the guys records above and they would tell a similar story. His numbers should be better in Asia (on said dust bowls) and they're just not.

Again, there is important context here. These Indian / sub-continent bowlers are playing against a number of nations who suck at playing spin, Lyon is up against guys who grow up on these same wickets.

Herath played 7 tests fewer and had 34 more wickets.
Aswin has played 20 tests fewer and has 19 more wickets.
Harbajan played 4 more tests and has 18 more wickets.

If he's our best ever that says more about us than him. None of those guys are in the conversation with Warne/Murali and nor is Lyon.

It should also tell us that finger spin is a waste of time because we've been bloody successful without it.

Those guys aren’t Australian; I don’t understand why you’d bring them up.

I’ve just come to the conclusion that you don’t watch much cricket.

I know it isn't Ashes-related but if you are on Kayo / Fox, have a look at the air quality in the India / NZ test, absolutely disgusting. I've lived in a country with air like that, not fun, not fun at all.
Is that smog ?
I was watching the other day at the start of play I thought it was fog !

Yep me too but I hope now he is selected he does well.
Oh of course, I hope he keeps well and gets a hundred. But it's still a weak selection. I don't see him being a long term option, he is just lucky he is following Paine who didn't do much with the bat so it's not a tough act to follow.

Given Peirson is not an option unfortunately and which is wrong, I’d prefer to take a punt on Inglis. Inglis would also allow so many media stories to be made of being a Pom playing for Aus too, especially with his noticeable British accent.

It would make England dirty. I mean, we already took Marnus from their normal talent nursery.

Carey deserves a go, it wasn't that long ago he was setting records in Shield that may never be broken. He's been great in a very ordinary sides.

He's a better keeper of spin than Inglis which will play a part.

His age and batting don't concern me, he's proven he can bat for long periods of time and do a job. He's been consistent for SA since 2013.

Carey has very good basic keeping skills, Harts says it all the time it's the first thing he watches for, will your game stand up under fatigue and Carey's will.

This was interesting on the age debate and runs- at Test debut.

GIlchrist- 45 Shield games, 236 dismissals, 2401 runs, 6-100's at 39.
Carey-37 Shield games, 149 dismissals, 2176 runs, 5-100's at 36.

Carey is two years older than Gilchrist.

Inglis and just added in.

39 games, 132 dismissals, 1928 runs, 3-100's at 34.

Pierson- 46 games, 165 dismissals, 2073 runs, 3-100's at 33.

Really not much between any of them.

I think the risk with going Inglis right now is it becomes hard to go back to Carey if he fails.

Aust cricket team has generally been a "harder to get dropped than get picked" and is usually about rewarding long term success rather than horses for courses and picking on form.

Carey has been set up as the heir apparent so to go with Inglis now would be like saying "you were ok, but you're no longer good enough for the job and we're going with the young buck".

If Inglis fails after being picked, then you have a situation where you have to go back to the heir apparent like "we made a mistake you can come in now" and you're also having to drop the young guy that you took a punt on, which could dent him and set his development back.

By picking Carey now they're giving him first chance at securing the spot because of his long term form. Inglis now knows he's the new heir apparent, which brings confidence and he can focus his development on that.

Yep all fair points and going with Carey is not a travesty by any means.

A bit of trivia ; Alex Carey was club captain at the GWS AFL franchise .
Kevin Sheedy rated his leadership very highly .
