CRICKET Australia v India Summer

I reckon McSweeney has a score in him this series, I hope they stick with him.
I think he literally just needs to find his way through Bumrah's first spell and he could cash in.

Easier said than done though.

I'm glad he's not throwing his wicket away though... he's getting out to some seriously good balls so far and isn't really being given any loose ones to put away.

If Australia can’t make the WTC final after this series or are locked in, I’d love to see them go a bit experimental for SL. I know they won’t but just for interest sake, I’d love to see them roll with:

1. Konstas
2. Labushagne
3. McSweeney
4. Green
5. Head
6. Connolly
7. Inglis
8. Cummins (c)
9. Starc
10. Green
11. Lyon

I would really like to see Inglis in the team... not necessarily for Carey, because he might be good enough to make it as a batter at that 6 position on his own and Carey has been in reasonable form.

When Green comes back that number 6 position becomes very interesting for the batting order and not having to shoehorn an all rounder into it.

On Carey it's always hard for a guy coming in at 7 to be making runs, but I never really feel all that confident when he comes in to bat... Gilly spoiled us, but even after him we had Haddin whose technique looked like a legit batter.

I've not really focussed enough on Inglis to get a good gauge on his technique, but he has played important controlled innings in short form and is a vital wicket whenever the scorchers play.

Big Bash doesn't really mean anything, but to me you want a guy that makes that shit look like easy mode before they should even be considered for international duty... and in recent years Inglis has looked composed and damaging at that level.

Why are people so keen on dropping a bloke who just scored 100 and averages 55+?

All about a new plaything so they can say "I said years ago he'd be great and should've been in the side".

Same players get mentioned ad nauseam

If you are referring to my side, as I said, it will never happen, I’m just throwing out a hypothetical. At some point Australia needs to plan for the future, the side is old, really old and as Ashwin’s retirement showed yesterday, the end can come quickly for guys at that age. Khawaja is Ashwin’s age, Lyon one year younger, Smith about two years younger. Start is 35, Hazlewood 34, Carey 33. Marsh 33/34. Even Cummins is 32.

This would just give a series to the next blokes to get some experience. You’d bring Smith back in for the WTC final and the Ashes. The reality is, some of these blokes will play through to the Ashes but have been in terrible form for about 2 years. Whoever performed from my side at best keeps their spot moving forward, at worst at least makes competition for spots.

He has a major flaw in his technique .
Keeps getting squared up and opening the blade . Other teams will have bowlers who can bowl that same ball .
Konstas has the opposite problem balls coming in he doesn`t know where his stumps are . Though he does look a talent .
Both can be remedied but probably not next week .

Will Green be back for the Sri Lankan tour ?
When will he be able to bowl ?

But if talk Cummins might miss the Sri Lanka tour or at least some of it. I’d be so keen to see some youth go on this tour. England often blood players in the non major series which is something we have never really done.

Not sure why Ashwin retired ?
Seems like a dummy spit ? One of the all time greats and he pulls the pin half way through a series . Strange .

Apparently he was told he wouldn't be picked anymore overseas and the next home Indian series is a while away.

He’s in his late 30’s and had a fantastic career. Nothing left to prove.

I would assume so but if he can only bat, he is good enough to bat only.

At #4 ?
I`m not convinced he`s a top order bat . All rounder who adds with bat and ball yes . #4 batsman alone ? I have seen some magnificent batting from him and some that looked like he didn`t know how to get a run .

He's a FAR better pure bat option than Marsh and a lot younger. He has averaged 50 the last 12 months compared to the next best Aussie bat - Carey - at 33. He's plenty good enough compared to every other bat in the side.

Absolutely he should... throwing a rookie into his debut series against a guy that is averaging 12 for the series.

Like you say he's looked good against anyone not named Bumrah... pretty much everyone has looked pretty good against all the other bowlers... the issue has been Bumrah taking 2-3 wickets in his first spell of the innings and decimating the top order.

Comment was more about media commenting that Marsh would be moved to open... who the **** would come up with that as a viable option... and it would seemingly be for McSweeney.

McSweeney not getting much help having to head to SL after this though... notoriously hard place for Aussie batsmen ... I hope he can play spin.

At the risk of saying it again- you're getting what you paid for. He averages 36 in FC cricket and his highest Test score is 39.

The fact is he's a good Shield player in two years of form, but Bumrah is a great Test bowler- he's just much much better bowler than McSweeney is a batsman. No shame in that.

McSweeney's average against seam in Shield is 40 but Bumrah isn't allowing him to do is play him off the back foot which McSweeney is desperate to do. He pushes him forward and with his angled bat he knicks off.

Another interesting fact McSweeney's average against Test bowlers in Shield 32.

Now do Marnus .
He had similar figures in Shield but was in the top few in ICC test rankings at one time .
Shame to see him back to his Shield tactics of waving the bat outside off and nicking . He shelved that early on in his test career .

Travis Head averaged under 40 for the longest time in FC as well before being picked in the Test side. It then took him time to find his feet and a style that worked for him.

McSweeney has come in on the back of two good Shield seasons, something similar to Head (probably did it a couple of seasons longer). McSweeney was a good choice but opening is not the same as batting in the middle order, this needs to be taken in to consideration. Not every batsman can do a Khawaja AND Khawaja was much more experienced when he took on test opening full time.
