Australian Cricket Team admit to ball tampering

Agree, life ban is OTT. I think 6 months or close to it is a must ( increasing to 12 months for similar offences ) but my thinking could be partly reactive to the lead up to this with Warners behavior among other things. It has been a gradual, unchecked deterioration and not just Aus.

Six months wouldn't achieve too much. We come home after this until June then go to England to play a ODI series. Then play a few more ODI before our summer. They could serve the six months and really miss not much.

12 month ban. They brought the baggy green into disrepute. If it was playing club or grade cricket that's a different story. But they are representing the 11, arguably the highest honour in Aussie sport.

Definitely agree with @Dexter that this is the final straw for the Aussie public. No doubt if it this was the Steve Waugh team the public would be more gracious, but this team have been petulant brats on and off the field at times the last couple of years.

Agreed. A lengthy suspension and a heavy fine are sufficient. As bad as it is and looks, this isn't match fixing or performance enhancing drugs - which should be rubbed out altogether.

The media also need to tone down their rhetoric. This is hardly the 'darkest day' in cricket. It's not even in the top 10.
Remember Phillip Hughes?

The NRL and Cricket Australia could learn the value of a few days of dignified silence while they get to the bottom of what happened.

The jackals in the media can then go back to an exclusive story of how Matt Lodge stole a kid's lunch money back in the third grade.

How does khawaja keep making this team?

Surely the top four get swapped out next test.

Considering they are about to sack 3 players from the team, he will be a walk up start for the next while.

Sorry @Accept but this is completely unacceptable. Couldn’t care less what other sides have or haven’t done, what punishments they have and haven’t got.

This is the Australian cricket team, they are extremely well paid, very well supported and absolutely looked up to. They also just seem so dismissive of it, like it’s not a big deal. It absolutely is and they are an utter disgrace.

If involved, Lehmann should be sacked, Smith and whoever else involved suspended for 12 months and Smith should definitely lose his captaincy.

This is really big and an example needs to be made of everyone involved, couldn’t care less if that means a less talented group needs to is forced to turn out. They need to work their butts off to show this is not a symptom of an overall cultural problem.

When does the fourth test start? These guys involved should be forced to pay the airfares and associated costs of everyone who replaces them after being suspended.

I will say that I do feel sorry for Bancroft, he was caught between a rock and a hard place being put in such a vulnerable position. Suspend him for 6 months.

What an absolute bunch of jerks to spit on the legacy that great side has. Won’t be sad if none of them involved ever play for the team again.

Bancroft is 25 not 12
He should cop the same punishment as Smith & Warner.

After re-watching the interview with Smith & Bancroft, I'm almost 100% sure the idea was Warner's. And they were too scared to say no to him.

You can tell by the way that Smith says "I won't name names, but it was the leaderships idea."

If the idea came from the leadership and everyone agreed with it and participated then I think Smith would've taken the fall, I think he was against it but Warner pushed for it because of what the South Africans have said to him over the last couple of weeks.

Hopefully the truth comes out with this integrity review, they'll probably all cop bans regardless, but I highly doubt this was Smith's idea.

Doesn’t matter who’s idea it was. Grow a backbone ffs.

We’ve tried to claim the moral high ground for a few years whilst acting like moody fucking teenagers.

Fucking over them and their pissweak excuses

Who had the original idea is irrelevant. It’s Smith’s team and everyone in the that meeting said great idea love it. Smith could have stopped it right there but he didn’t. He showed no leadership.

To say wasn’t my idea would be ridiculous. To use that excuse would just provoke the response- how weak a leader are you? What else could your team suggest and you say yes to?

I actually think this is quite likely. Regardless Smith's position is untenable. If as Australian captain he can't stand up to one of his players then he has no place being there.

I Spose the next thing will be for family member having a severe illness & as such player X has decided to retire, effective immediately, to spend more time at home.
I can smell a cover up coming

Yeah wonder if a mental illness excuse will be used or something that the players are advised that people will not attack, etc.

Whatever happens, please cricketing gods, don’t let Michael Clarke back anywhere near the team!
I’d take Chappel back as captain before that entitled sook.

This may be too early for this comment, but in this world where we are used to denial after denial I think the admission of guilt has shocked everyone. Don't get me wrong, it an awful blight on our reputation as a test playing nation, but at least when the shit hit the fan, they fessed up and took the full brunt, and didn't concoct some bullshit excuse.

That’s the saving grace. Still has to go but if didn’t tell the truth would have wanted a year or two off for him and his compatriots.

And now footage has emerged of Bancroft placing a spoonful of sugar in to his pocket as well during one of the matches in the Ashes, indicating this wasn't a one off incident.. We may have been cheating for a while and just never got caught.

Wow! This is blowing my mind. I wonder if we are the only team that has been doing this

Are you serious? Atherton got done for dirt in his pocket at Lords 24 years ago, Tendulkar, Afridi, Faf they've all been done. It's been going on for a long time. Bottle tops, long finger nails, zippers, spikes on shoes and lollies it's all been used.
