Hayden had a great career and will most likely go to South Africa if he can score some runs for the bulls in the shield matches before the Squad for the South African tour is selected.

Problem I think I heard is there is only a shield game starting tomorrow between now and the team selection for him to make any impression, and you'd think while he should play it is unlikely he will. I may be wrong.

I think it is all 20/20's and one dayers in domestic for most of January.

Personally I think he should announce his retirement (should have done on Day 5 of last Test) and gone out on his terms as can't see him coming back. Class Act, class career but not the way to go out IMHO.

The selectors would've informed Hayden of his standing in the respective squads a fair while ago I reckon. And if they had any intention of leaving him out of future Test tours, you can bet that they would've given one of our all time great openers the "tap on the shoulder" in advance to give him the opportunity for a smooth farewell in Sydney.

IMO they have him in their plans for the Ashes, and I think that's where we're likely see Haydos put the bat back in the bag for the last time (surely he can't go one more Aussie summer? Stranger things have happened).

They'll also take a promising young opener for once as a reserve, probably Phil Hughes. A great experience for him to be on tour and learn about the big time from the big man.

I don't think its that big of a shock that Hayden's been left out of the ODI's, even if he was enjoying decent Test form. There's too many fresher faces in the domestic scene to ignore and we can't keep delaying the team's transition in that form of the game. But in the Test arena, where experience counts for a bit more, I think the selectors are probably going to be a bit more cautious in leaving out older heads in the team's current situation, especially for the Ashes.

Is it just me, or did everyone having a wank over G Smith's actions never see the 2000 grand final featuring Shane Webcke?

Full credit to the Seth Effrikan captain, but FMD surely Webcke's efforts eclipsed those at the SCG yesterday?

Just because they gave him the heads up doesn't mean he took it. People can bet pretty stubborn especially when it comes to the end of their career. They could very well have said something like "Matty given your form we really don't see that we can continue to select you, you've been a great ambassador for our game so given our feelings on your continued selection, we'd really like to give you the opportunity to retire and go out with some dignity". To which he may have gone "F*** you! I'm just in a bit of a slump, I'll turn it around. I'm not done yet." You get the idea. Not saying that's what has happened in Hayden's case but I know of a number of players in a number of sports where this has been the situation and in the end the selectors have had no option but to drop them cold.

Yeah, fair call. Hayden seems like the "screw the critics, I'm going to do it my own way" type of person.

And it's a solid ODI squad, Hauritz deserves his spot in this form of the game. The middle order looks very strong but the openers are a tad weak, Marsh isn't in the best form and Hopes will probably struggle to get past 20 or 30.

Touche.

As has been mentioned, if anyone in the current team is that type, it'd be Hayden. We'll see soon enough anyway.

Why do you think hayden would be like that?

That's just his character. And its not necessarily a bad thing mind you, depends on your opinion.

Looking forward to the 20/20 tonight against RSA. Hope the new boys go well.

Wasn't too keen on 20/20 when it started but it's really growing on me now.

God, the Aussie 20/20 uniform gives me a headache. Yellow and grey? Whoever designed it should be exiled to the salt mines.

I love 20/20, the fielding has so much more ......

WHAT A SIX.... GOOORNNNNEEE..

Like I was saying, they seem to be right on every ball, it like the fielders are on speed.

ANOTHER ONE........ THATS OUTTA HERE....

Don't know why they bother with bowlers. Make it Tee cricket ... and no I don't mean Aeetee...I mean put a tee in front of the batsman and let them flog it. It's no different.

Whattacatch... Aussies one down with pointless ponting coming to the crease... what are the odds of him making 10 or less or a duck.... hmmmm

Ponting should never play 20/20. 20/20 Batsmen need to come to the crease firing from the get-go, Punting needs to feel his way into his innings. (to summarise the commentators - but I have always thought that too)

Nah, Ponting either fires or gets out first ball, so he's fine.

That was one hell of a catch by snorkel.
