The Brisbane Heat have swooped to sign teenage Afghanistan spin prodigy Mujeeb Ur Rahman for this summer’s KFC Big Bash League.

The 17-year-old became the first male player born in the 21st century to play international cricket when he made his senior Afghanistan debut last year and has since represented his country at Test, ODI and T20 level.

A wrist spinner who also bowls conventional spin, Mujeeb is the second International signed by the Heat and joins New Zealand legend Brendon McCullum on the Brisbane books for BBL|08.

Mujeeb said, ”Once I played for my country I dreamed of playing in the IPL, county cricket and the Big Bash. I have been able to achieve the first two so this is very exciting for me. I am looking forward to meeting up with everyone at the Heat and playing in Australia.”

As was the case in BBL|07, clubs are entitled to have a maximum of two Overseas Players on their eighteen-man rosters and can also nominate an additional two Overseas Players as potential replacements throughout the course of the BBL|08 season.

Mujeeb, who is currently playing in the same team in the inaugural Afghanistan Premier League as his future Heat teammate Ben Cutting, is expected to be available for the entire BBL tournament.

Cutting, who took a hat-trick as captain in the opening game for the Nangarhar Leopards in Shajah last week, played against Mujeeb during this year’s Indian Premier League where the young spinner caught the eye for King’s XI Punjab with 14 wickets at an economy rate of 6.99.

Vettori said it was exciting for the Heat to introduce another precocious young talent to the BBL.
“We were very pleased to have Shadab Khan play for us last season and the impression he and Yasir Shah made on the competition was very encouraging,’’ he said.

“Mujeeb is a rare talent and we’re delighted he is going to play in the BBL for the first time. From what we have seen so far at International level and in competitions like the IPL and the Vitality t20 Blast in England, he has the skills and maturity to adapt and excel in a variety of conditions.”

“He has been successful in the power play and closing out an innings, so we will have options to explore depending on the state of the game. At this stage we anticipate having him for the entire BBL which is a bonus,’’ Vettori said.

We have one more spot to fill on their 18-player roster, with Vettori expecting to finalise the line-up shortly.

We have announced the following contracted players for BBL|08:

Max Bryant, Joe Burns, Ben Cutting, Brendan Doggett, Sam Heazlett, Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Lalor, Chris Lynn, Brendon McCullum (int), James Pattinson, Jimmy Peirson, Jack Prestwidge, Matthew Renshaw, Alex Ross, Mark Steketee, Mitch Swepson, Mujeeb Ur Rahman (int).

Hopefully the bowling is better than last year's, that was almost unwatchable.

Cutting getting a hatty in the Afghan League ... I hope he’s signed purely to bat this season

Death bowling specialist like last year.

Nah, I'm pretty confident Cutting won't be bowling a single over in the final 4 overs of any games. It should be Steketee & Mujeeb opening the bowling & finishing the game, they're our 2 most accomplished T20 bowlers.

Pattinson, Cutting & Swepson to bowl overs 5-16

He played for the Bulls this season, made his debut against SA, considering small grounds and rookie spinner I thought he had a real crack. Even in the Short massacre three wickets for 50.

Scrochers have a gun squad once again, they are head and shoulders above every other side. The next best are Thunder and Heat on paper.

1. McCullum
2. Bryant
3. Lynn (c)
4. Burns
5. Heazlett
6. Pierson (wk)
7. Cutting
8. Pattinson
9. Steketee
10. Ur Rahman
11. Swepson

That should probably be the team. I don't particularly want Cutting in there, but when you look at the 13 man squad, he essentially has to be the in there so we have 7 guys who can swing the willow.

Wouldn't mind Renshaw in there as well

Anybody playing SuperCoach BBL this year? I'm in my annual league, just curious what line-up everyone is starting the season with. Heat & Scorchers both play 2 games in Round 1, but the Heat play ZERO games in Round 2 & Round 3, so be careful not to stack too many Heat boys.

Here's my 16 at this point in time -

Shane Watson - $166,700
Brandon McCullum - $113,100
Joe Denly - $186,800
Glenn Maxwell - $175,000
Mitch Marsh - $198,000
Jos Buttler - $160,200
David Willey - $194,000
Jofra Archer - $174,400
Rashid Khan - $198,800
Majeeb Ur Rahman - $93,800
Usman Khan Shinwari - $75,000

Bench -

Max Bryant - $42,000
Jason Sangha - $42,000
Josh Philippe - $42,000
Jack Edwards - $42,000
Sandeep Lamichhane - $62,500

I'm running Marsh this week for the DGW, but expect him to get selected for Aus (he shouldn't be).

I just took Maxwell out last night for Carey. I'm worried he'll be batting too low in the order and you'll need Carey for the DGW next round.

Maxwell should be batting at 3 or 4 with the injury to Maddinson and Handscomb unavailable. I imagine the batting order will be Dunk, Stoinis, Dean, Maxwell, Bravo, Merlo, Gulbis.

But yeah I agree actually, the Stars also don't play a DGW until Round 10 (!), so I'll go with Carey.

I assume you're referring to the Test side? Because Australia has already confirmed we're going with the same 13 man squad for the final 2 games of the series. Mitch should be playing for the Scorchers right up until the ODI's in Rounds 7 & 8.

I'm leaning towards putting Lynn in for this week and just subbing him out straight away, I think the game plan should be having the 3 Heat players you think will score biggest in Round 1 and just subbing them all out. Might go with Lynn, Ur Rahman & Pattinson. I might cheat and put Bryant in as well, with the idea of swapping him for Wade next week and saving a trade.

I also subbed out Buttler, Shinwari & Lamichhane. Didn't realise they were only playing the early rounds.

Isn't Marsh in the 13 man test side?

Upload 2018 12 19 14 22 18

That's my side at the moment. I'll be getting Watto in in GW 2 or 3, probably 3. Plays a DGW in r4 I think, and I need to see if he's going to bowl.

Oh damn you're right, I thought he wasn't. Either way they said he has to go back and score more runs to get a shot, and he hasn't, so you've gotta assume he doesn't get picked. Bowlers are doing the job without him anyway.

Nice team, 5 Heat and 4 Scorchers is a lot though. Especially with the Heat having 0 games over the next 2 rounds. I'm also not sure that Qadir will get a run, they have a LOT of bowling depth.
