Brisbane halfback Ben Hunt says he is ready to take his kicking game to another level ahead of his last season with the Broncos.

Hunt will leave Red Hill at the end of the 2017 NRL season after signing a five-year deal with the St. George Illawarra Dragons.

A huge deal like that brings with it added pressure and huge expectations, and Hunt has made it his mission to prove his worth by working on arguably the worst aspect of his game – his kicking.

It's been the main focus of the 26-year-old's pre season, and although there are still improvements to be made, he said he feels like it is heading in the right direction.

"I've been working on my kicking game. I think it's an area that all of the halves at the club have been trying to improve on," Hunt said.

"Overall I've definitely made a big improvement on last year, but I still don't think it's where it needs to be just yet.

"I'll keep at it and hopefully there will be visible improvements come Round 1 against the Sharks."

That match will signal the start of Brisbane's 2017 premiership campaign and the Broncos are hungry for success.

Brisbane are desperate for a premiership after a 10-season drought, but for that to happen Wayne Bennett's men will have to make some improvements on their failed 2016 season.

"There are a few things our side needs to do this year that we didn't manage to do last year," Hunt said.

"We pride ourselves on our defence and that dropped off a bit last year.

"Our attack also has certain aspects that could be done better.

"I think we need to improve our forward movement coming out of our own half. Hopefully this will create more options."

One area where Brisbane have improved is in their backline, with the Broncos acquiring former Gold Coast Titan David Mead in the off-season.

Mead was one of Brisbane's best in their 30-12 trial win over the Sharks on Saturday night, with the 28-year-old looking lively in attack and solid in defence.

He will be another attacking weapon for Hunt to utilise, and the Brisbane half already likes what he's seen.

"I think he's what will make our backline go one better this year. I've never seen anyone that loves footy as much as David," he said.

"Everything he does is at 100 per cent and he never stops trying. I'm very happy to have him in the side.

"He's one of those lads from PNG that can bring out the huge hits. In our trial against the Sharks he was cutting blokes in half."

His kicking game sure didn't look any better in the trial... It's one of those cliches players always say but hardly ever seem to follow through with.

I'll believe it when I see it, Ben.

Disagree.. I think he got more repeat sets and he would of had a couple more.
While they went dead in goal by just one or two bounces, were better timed, neater executution and looked smarter.

While that may be true, the result is still the same. Until that changes, his kicking game will still be inadequate

Exactly, the whole issue with his kicking, besides decision making, is execution and accuracy.
Like Nashy said, I'll wait until I see it. But I'll do that sitting down and won't hold my breath...

Who cares now. He's gone at the end of this season. It's Merge's problem. As long as he cuts this kicking on the third BS out for 2017, I couldn't care less.

ok thanks for the consideration ben.

Why couldn't he work on it earlier? It was obvious he's had problems with it ever since his debut even. I remember the odd games he's used to have alongside Lockyer or Norman and it was pretty shit even then. I doubt he'll improve it anyway, but thanks for waiting so long Ben.

He'll perfect his kicking game just in time for his debut for the dragons. Great.

Everyone knows that I'm the biggest Ben Hunt fan going, but I have to admit this shits me. I know this is probably just one of those rubbish articles etc. but why come out now and say this? It's been the one thing holding his game back and he is essentially saying he has finally
started to give a shit about it.

It's disappointing.

Spot on b4l, as usual. I suspect you're right about it's just a rubbish article. But on the other hand, is Ben Hunt really that detached from reality he's now conceded "yeah, maybe I could do a bit better with my kicks." I don't think you can rule it out.

More to your point, I suspect any day now we'll have an article about Macca saying "yeah - I really need to go the whole 80 minutes."

I think Ben can shut the **** up and just get it done. He either puts his last year all on the line or doesn't. I hope he plays well for us and goes out with a trophy. It will likely be his last shot. Last year showed he has trouble with pressure and being in the spotlight. just wait until the dragons fans treat him like they did soward.

Thats just dandy Ben...why didnt you improve it last year...looking at first trial...my god .. not much improvement yet.

Bring on nikorima quickly....

His short kicking was better in the trial.

We'll have to wait to get an accurate picture on whether he has actually made improvements like he said or if it was just a fluke.
