Bennett not to return - Signs with Knights

at least youll have your $8mil to comfort you after this failure.

It's already been mentioned about how the $2mil a season actually works, but I will ask you this question. If you have 2 children that required 24/7 caring, and you wanted to provide them with the best life they can possibly have, would you turn down the best opportunity to do that for them?

Ima guess the response.....

My guess: "Bennett was the one who said it wasn't for the money"

Wow you are soooooo ANTI-WB AP that it affects your argument. The fact you think WB played an insignificant part in ST G's title is stretched as well.

OBVIOUSLY WB isn't going to aim for a title with their CURRENT roster... that is ridiculous... You still need a team consisting of certain talent to take out the title. I don't agree with a lot WB's coaching either but there are some things he's good at... and that's -

- Constructing a team that actually believes they can win
- More emphasis on D than ATK esp online D
- Sticking to game plan A and only A

and its the sort of shit newcastle needs... cause their discipline and D is just shocking and inconsistent as hell.

His plans do have downfalls ... but he is simplism at its best. He will MOST likely get the Knights in a position to do something in the 2nd year... whether they actually have the talent to do so against the powerhouses remains to be seen.

I reckon a few will appreciate this. The statements that are in the same colour are the ones that completely contradict eachother. Here are some of the things that AP has rattled off today.
.....
So what's happened in 6 months AP? Howcome City/Country and NZ representation was no achievement back then, but it is now???

[icon_wink
missed the point.

someone asked to list the newcastle players rep players, so i did.

i didnt comment on the validity of the representative teams. i still think city/country is a load of cr@p (although i love it for the injuries), and yes, i still think that playing for NZ/Fiji/etc isnt that big a deal when you have guys who have played <10 NRL matches getting chosen.

but thats besides the point. the point was listing people who had previous rep matches under their belt. i did that.

youll also note that on the JWH quote, thats completely different. i was arguing that playing a handful of games for NZ isnt the same as playing a handful for Australia - which it isnt. i dont know why you even brought that quote into this topic? NZ jerseys being handed out like lollies doesnt change the fact that theyre a rep player, which is why i listed them because thats what i was asked to do [eusa_doh

better luck next time jeb. you never know, one day you might actually comprehend whats going on in one of these threads and make an on-topic relevant post.

i doubt it though.

The reason it was asked to list rep players was to avoid argument in 12-24 months time when Newcastle win the premiership that they "were already stacked with rep stars".

So if you don't believe NZ rep or city-country or club player of the year or all stars are legit rep games, then please advise so you don't try and count Zeb Taia as a "star player", for example.

Honestly is there any side devoid of talent in the NRL these days?

Nope. The whole point of the salary cap is that it has evened things out. A lot. So to say "oh that team had good players already" is a moot point, but it hasn't stopped it being trotted out.

No AP. No.

6 months ago you argued that playing city-country or for NZ wasn't worth mentioning because it suited your agenda.

Now your using it to back up your agenda. Plain and simple.

far out i love how people here seem to think that bennett ALWAYS delivers premierships. where was this wayne bennett between 2000 and 2006? then after 2006, why didnt we win in 2007 or 2008? where was he between 93 and 97?

the fact that youre all basically agreeing that Newcastle are going to win a premiership in the next 2 years is beyond a joke lol.

hahahahahahaha

6 months ago i said they mean nothing. im still saying that now. i simply listed rep honours for the players in newcastle, and added a few others that have had achievements that show theyre good up and comers.

are City/Country/NZ/Fiji selections rep honours Jeb? im not asking if you think theyre representative of a great player, im asking if they are rep honours. answer the question.

and again, trotting out the old "agenda" line lol. i swear, i mustve missed the dictionary change where they copy pasta'd the meaning of "opinion" and put it under "agenda" as well.

Hehe. For the record, I don't know if Bennett is going to win Newcastle a premiership. Who knows?! But it's funny as hell seeing your reaction whenever anyone praises Bennett [icon_razz1

Has anyone actually guaranteed Bennett's premiership at Newcastle?

And while Bennett may not of won us a premiership during that period in 2001-05 I thought he did a sensational job for us in 2004. We had every right to drop our bundle given the changes to our squad yet we finished third.

2 years might be a bit optimistic, but I'm sure he'll win a title with them before his contract is up.
WB is a bit like a better version of Brian Smith, in that he can turn a struggling team around and bring them to the top. In fact, I think that's where modern Bennett is best. Look back at his history:

1988: Broncos join the comp, go from missing the finals to being back-to-back champs within 5 years.
2000: After struggling in 1999, the team comes back to win the title convincingly.
2006: A cleanout of the coaching staff and a revamp of the structure of the team leads to a premiership.
2009: WB takes the Dragons from 'a team with potential' to the most consistent and dominant in the NRL.

It's in between these crises that he's achieved his more mediocre results - although an unbroken string of finals appearances is hardly mediocre by most people's standards.

Yes

I hope they win in the next 4 years, just to see what AP's excuse will be then.

What do you mean by proven?

As in played more than one game, or actually played a good rep. game? Because a lot of Dragons players who made the step up, didn't.

Yeah but when the Knights players start grabbing NSW and AUS jerseys left, right and centre we will all be saying "wow, look what Wayne has done" but YOU will be saying "oh bullshit, they were rep players before Wayne came!"

Sure they may technically have been rep players of some kind but there were never PROVEN rep players.

Bennett did that to St George. Turned then into proven Rep players.

And turned them into a proven team. ie, a group of men working together for a common goal, producing results greater than the sum of the parts. Whereas beforehand they were not producing results that were even the best efforts of the individuals.

That's what he brings to a club.

As in, not just an 18th man for QLD or a shitty City/Country match. Players that stepped it up into the REAL rep scene.[/quote:2yyecbl6]

Yep. Players who have been selected fairly consistently and performed well. One off call ups etc, don't count.

Fair enough, although wouldn't say many of them actually played that well.

True, but then they were playing for NSW...
