If Civo doesn't leave (and I don't blame him at all for that), he'd be top 5 for sure IMO. His best seasons were at Penrith, unfortunately.

Players who leave because they want a specific position are more common than they were in Hoffman's days, but Hoffman was superb on the wing for the Broncos...and in his early days, when he was just playing his natural game thanks to Lockyer making up for it, actually did a good job at fullback. Unfortunately after Lockyer retired, and the Broncos really needed more ball playing out of their fullback, it forced him go away from his basic skillset and try to be something he was not and it just didn't work out.

2011 BHQ Greatest Rank: 6
Highest Vote: 2 (Tommy, GCBRONCO, Porouian)

Steve Renouf has cemented his legacy as one of the all-time greats of rugby league with a storied career that saw him dominate on the field for over a decade. Known as the ‘Pearl’ due to his speed and agility, Renouf proved to be a dynamic force on the field that inspired a generation of fans and aspiring players alike.

Making his way to Brisbane via his hometown of Murgon, Renouf made his Broncos debut in 1989 and immediately becoming a focal point of the attack. Renouf would see early success with the club, being part of the 1992 and 1993 premierships that the Broncos won by beating St George Dragons on both occasions with Renouf scoring a length of the field try in the '92 decider.

Renouf’s partnership with Kevin Walters became the stuff of legend as the two players developed a connection that was seemingly telepathic. Renouf’s lightning speed meant he was able to make swift breaks and score crucial tries, which he did on many occasions. Renouf holds the record for most tries scored for the Broncos with 142.

In 1997, Renouf helped the Broncos to secure their third premiership, scoring three tries in the Grand Final against Cronulla Sharks. He then won his fourth premiership in 1998 with the Broncos defeating Canterbury on the big day. Renouf only being denied his 5th grand final try by a poor refereeing decision.

Renouf’s success with the Broncos was mirrored on the international stage when he made his Australia debut in 1992. He would go onto score the winning try in the 1992 World Cup final against England and then back those efforts up in the 1994 Kangaroo Tour where he played in all three tests, defeating Great Britain 2-1 in the three match series.

After an illustrious career with the Broncos, Renouf moved to the Wigan Warriors in the UK Super League. He would then return to Australia finishing his career with Easts Tigers.

In 2012, Renouf was inducted into the Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to a man who inspired generations of rugby league fans and players. His legacy in the sport will continue to be felt for many years to come, and he will always be remembered as the ‘Pearl’ of rugby league.

Hard to argue either of these. The Pearl was amazing. I’m ashamed I took him for granted. It’s a disgrace that any indigenous kid with above average speed gets compared to him because he was so much more than being fast. The lines he ran were elite.

Milford is a thief.

Here we go - top 5!

Renouf - Basically the prototype NRL era centre. Fast, agile and x factor coming out of every part of him. Extremely likeable both on and off the field and a rightful member of the top five. So glad he has hung around with the club to this day and is a great mentor for both the indigenous squad members and the backs. Absolute bonified legend.

Milford - Unsurprising top five pick. Hard to believe he was with us so long and got progressively worse every year despite being in what should have been the prime of his career. The Broncos highest paid player and first millionaire and repaid it with laziness, a lack of drive and a pathetic work ethic. It is sad because he was likeable enough, just overhyped and left at a point where his best was well and truly behind him despite being mid-late 20's. His 2015-early 2016 seems like it was a totally different player to what he ended as. Bennett will also never admit he got Milford's development wrong but he did, badly. Another terrible contract from a terrible era.

I thought I rated Pearl as my #1, must have muffed it. My childhood hero tho, what can't you say about him? I don't remember exactly when I found out he was a Type 1 Diabetic but (as one as well) that was such a huge inspiration for me at a time when it was a bloody difficult thing to get my head around. I've struggled with it as a normal bloke so I can only imagine how hard it must have been for him as a professional sportsman. My favourite ever player and I think he always will be.

pearl was my OG childhood idol. champion player and champion bloke.

got the chance to meet him and notify him of this years later, stopped what he was doing and gave a genuine handshake and a quick chat. wife has had dealings with him before with QR and has mentioned the same - just a really good dude with no ego.

My mistake, you did.

It was over three years. SL won and his Broncos offer was 500k over four.

My ex-wife and I met him and he told me why he wanted me to come to the Roosters. He wanted me on a three-year contract and then said I could write down on a piece of paper what I wanted. Nick went out of the room and left us on our own, so we thought we'd go for broke. We wrote down $1 million a year.17 May 2018

Renouf - like many have already said, was also my childhood hero. Absolutely loved watching him play and may have even been the reason I supported the Broncos from an early age.

Milford - what a disappointment he turned out to be. In the 2016 game against the Cowboys when he kicked that field goal I was in bemusement that he was so good and only 21 at the time. I truly thought he was going to be an all time great. I then blindly supported him over the next number of years, convincing myself he would come good eventually. Damn shame.
