**** yeah Petero. I don't even think any opposition fans hate him, he's that good of a dude. A dream that we had a guy like him play for us for so long.

Darius was incredible for us until that season where he kept not wanting to tackle anyone and it just got worse from there. Not exactly captaincy material, but he was Wayne's homie so captain Darius lead us to our only wooden spoon.

Petero - Not top 5? I suppose it’s surprising but absolute gentleman and a true legend of the club. The fact he wasn’t a one club player is a travesty that will always hang over the club. Him and Webcke are quite possibly the best prop duo in the history of league.

Boyd - A lesson in how important it is not to go one season too long…except he went about three too long. His final contract was awful at the time and awful in hindsight. At his best he was excellent but he really was a fitting captain for the dark times, he led from the front with selfishness but hanging around WAY too long.

Petero, my word, what a man. Like tackling a giant piece of granite on the field, and an incredible bloke off it.

I remember when I started my journalism course at uni back in 2009 and we had to do a 'character profile' type article on someone. I set my sights high (a bit too high) and tried to get in touch with Petero to do an interview, so I could write a profile on him.

The media manager at the Panthers at the time wasn't much help at all, understandably - why would you want to help some loser uni student. I never heard back, so I went with my backup plan and did it on a mate of mine that was handy at golf haha. Think I ended up with a distinction.

Anyway, a month or two later, I get a phone call from this private number, and it's bloody Petero! 😯😯😯 He said he was sorry, he was just going through his diary and saw he had a note to call me for an interview. I was gobsmacked. I just said nah Petero, it's all good mate, deadline was some time ago haha, don't worry about it mate! He was super friendly and apologised again for not getting back to me in time. Anyway, I was on a high for a while after that - just stoked I got a chance to speak to the big man himself.

Thanks for reading my lame story. I love you, Petero.

EDIT: I slightly misremembered my story, here is a more accurate version (which is basically the same haha) - https://broncoshq.com/threads/petero-is-retiring.20335/#post-2427121

That's an awesome story. What a guy. My Mum and Dad went to his book signing to get me a signed book for my birthday and they said he was a really nice guy. They took a picture with him and it's such a nice photo.

Before the game on Saturday, he was there just shaking hands with people that signed up for that pre-game tour experience thing whatever it's called. He just genuinely seemed to be happy to talk to these people.

Work with a bloke that played some lower grades for Sharks in the front row around the Super League era (same era as Tiaan Strauss). He told me that he tackled Petero once (trial game?) and it was like tackling solid iron, went into it with everything he had and then wished he hadn't.

Yeah, Petero's wiki page actually explains why he's so difficult to tackle - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granite

Was it Petero who worked at the rockLea markets while he was playing first grade? Used to get up before dawn to pack fruit for a few hours before he went to training. One of our guys did it think it was him.

Ben Hannant? I seem to remember reading that recently after his podcast with Kemp

Doesn't Suprise me he was nice and doesn't Suprise me he was hopeless on his phone.

You could ring him and say ring me or I will die and he would take a week to get back to you and still say sorry in a way that your family love him.
