How Bennett's decisions still haunt the club that sacked him
Wayne Bennett was hiding in the bathroom of a south Brisbane café when he told me, “I won’t let them win".
That was last November as he dodged a TV ‘bounce’ then called me to explain why.
I didn’t understand the explanation then or now. The entire situation was rather awkward.
I don’t doubt he has the ability to ensure ‘them’, who I assumed were Brisbane’s board, don’t win.
However, it’s a 2017 decision he pushed the Broncos board to make that’s helping his mission.
Bennett made a career from sticky-taping pink slips to player’s lockers when they least expected it.

He’s only trusted one man to improve into their 30’s – Darius Boyd.
Bennett wasn’t so faithful to Wally Lewis or Trevor Gillmeister.
His pre-game interviews with Lewis still reek with animosity, 28 years later.
It is only 18 months since Bennett extended a 30-year-old Boyd to a rich four-year deal, yet the well-paid fullback faces demotion to the left wing or right centre next week.

Boyd’s off contract at the end of 2021, when he will be 34 and still earning north of $600,000 a year.
It is a contract that could postpone the club’s premiership aspirations. A contract many at Brisbane didn’t want signed.
He is one of rugby league’s great talents and redemption stories. To his credit, he has repeatedly fronted the media this year to discuss his poor form.
He’s also the sort of character who will retire before his contract ends if he feels he’s hurting the team.
Boyd said this week his poor performances were due to trying too hard and he’s actually right.
He’s over-committing in defence, backing himself to take intercepts and running ahead of the play when trying to cover.
His body can’t match his effort. He needs to make smarter plays that his body can handle.
In last week’s loss against Canberra, Jack Bird sprinted down the left flank in the second half and Boyd was unable to mount a support run despite being level with Bird when he took off.
It was duly noted inside Red Hill HQ.
Boyd just doesn’t trust his body and rivals target him relentlessly.
Teams kick away from most fullbacks but straight to Boyd.
He’s received the ball more than any fullback this year which is why he ranks sixth among custodians in kick-return metres.
Yet he’s outside the top 50 in line-breaks and tackle breaks, with one try assist to his name in six games.
The Boyd deal was scrutinised and questioned by Brisbane heavies in 2017, but ultimately, blame for the decision rests with Brisbane’s board - alongside Bennett.
But that extension was among the reasons Bronco officials had for sacking the Supercoach.
Boyd backed that sacking too.
He signed his extension for one reason.
“We’ve got unfinished business. The Broncos set premierships as benchmarks,” he said in 2017 when the four-year deal was announced.
Today, the Broncos are one win from six games post-Bennett.
To achieve that premiership benchmark, Boyd needs a dramatic form improvement or a positional switch.
Otherwise, Wayne’s declaration “I won’t let them win” may come true.

Broncos look to lock in young guns

The Broncos begin contract negotiations with Corey Oates and Tevita Pangai next week, the Roosters remain the biggest threat for Pangai. Oates is all but certain to stay.
Pangai has cut off social media this season and is determined to become known as consistent.
His most hated word at the moment is ‘x-factor’, a term he’s often associated with.
He has Dally M Medal potential but is a middle forward worth 800k plus a season?
The Roosters told Pangai and his management to keep them informed of his contract status as they will have money to spend.
Brisbane won’t match anything north of 600-700k for Pangai.
They also won’t overspend on Oates.
Brisbane's roster is close to set for the next three years if those two re-sign.

The lesson every NRL player must learn

James Roberts deserves condemnation for drinking to the point of passing out in public which he did after their loss to the Dragons.
It was dumb but those at the scene of Blackbird Bar and Grill say he was well behaved and complied when told by security he had enough. He was among several Broncos and a Dragons player who helped him leave.
Then a friend of a friend jumped in Roberts’ Uber and as the Bronco centre passed out in the backseat he redirected the Uber to a party. The so-called friend carried Roberts into the venue and paraded him around like a trophy and had photos taken with him.
It’s a lesson for every NRL player.

This is why I was pissed with White and co at the time of the Bennett saga. Don't piss in the fans pockets and try and tell them it's raining. There was obviously more to the story than looking to the future or whatever story they peddled about moving him on.

I don't believe resigning Boyd was the sole reason Bennett was moved on but it contributed evidently.

Also, I'm happy for Bennett to pay a price for the decision but what was the rest of the board doing?
 
I wonder why he wrote "left wing or right centre"? If Boyd is moved there, what happens to Oates/Roberts?
 
I like the “teams intentionally kick to Boyd” comment. Most people would call that good positioning.

Yes, it implies that Boyd simply has to stand still and they'll lob the ball to him. I think what probably happens is Boyd gets to the ball quite well and possibly other teams simply choose to kick it away from Oates because he's a good kick returner. Naturally that means Boyd's receptions are up but if you've got an agenda, well...

Might not have been intended as a slur but it was all the same. You perhaps could have said he's had a well publicised battle with mental health issues. He may in fact be much stronger than most.

You'd think Bird or Isaako plays FB in that situation so maybe Boyd is only effective in those positions if moved? Didn't he play in those sides in Origin? Still, it's an absolute joke that the guy is so past it that we have to shuffle him onto the wing just to find a spot for him.
