NEWS Boyd Urged to Consider Early Retirement

Because waving your arms at the ref isn't doing your best, it's waving your arms at the ref. There are so many instances of him not putting his body on the line. A player doing their best would be putting his body on the line.

In your opinion its not him doing his best. I dont see it that way tbh, his team mates dont see it that way ( and they would be the ones who jumped on it quicker than anyone else if he let them down ) and the coach doesnt see it that way. Plenty of players wave their arms about. The putting his body on the line part, i do think a couple of times it hasnt looked great for him, but how do you prove he is doing it intentionally? You just cant, there is no definitive way to do it, its just subjective.

I know it's subjective, I'm just surprised anyone could possibly see all the examples and still think it's not intentional.

Darius Boyd urged to consider early retirement as Broncos face retention headaches

PETER BADEL,
The Courier-Mail

Queensland Origin legend Billy Moore has urged Darius Boyd to consider an early retirement to help the Broncos free-up funds to stave-off poaching raids on hulking Brisbane young gun David Fifita. Cashed-up NRL rivals are poised to pick the eyes out of Brisbane’s star-studded roster with Parramatta and the Warriors preparing big-money raids for Fifita, who made his Queensland Origin debut in June. The Broncos did well to upgrade Matt Lodge and Tevita Pangai Jr last month, but the $4 million retention drive has left the club with limited funds under the salary-cap to prevail in a bidding war for Fifita.

Brisbane will face fresh retention headaches next season with a number of big-name stars coming off-contract. They include veteran hooker Andrew McCullough, centre sensation Kotoni Staggs and backline aces Anthony Milford and Jack Bird, who have options in their favour.

Moore believes one solution lies in skipper Boyd walking away 12 months early to give the Broncos a salary-cap war chest. The 32-year-old captain’s future has come under the microscope following his patchy form this season. “If Darius stood down, then financially it would give the Broncos a lot of money under the cap to keep a kid like David Fifita,” Moore said. “If Darius can see that his form and his ability to influence matches has declined, he needs to consider retirement. “When you are earning $700,000 or $800,000 a season, that’s the type of elite money where you dictate whether your team wins a match each week. “I don’t think Darius is playing well enough to do that, so if at the end of 2020, if he has another repeat season of 2019, then he has to consider walking away.”

Boyd has copped savage criticism in recent weeks since his move from fullback to five-eighth, but he hit back at his detractors with an improved display in Brisbane’s gutsy 24-12 defeat of Penrith on Friday night. Former Maroons lock Moore has great respect for Boyd’s 313 games of service in the NRL, but says the skipper’s current contract, worth around $700,000 a season, could be crucial funds to retain the next generation headlined by Fifita. The back-row wrecking ball is off-contract next season, meaning he can field formal offers from November 1 this year.
“It would be a noble move by Darius (to retire early),” Moore said.

“Should he do it? Maybe he won’t, but if Darius does walk away, I hope he stays on for the Broncos in an off-field capacity because he has been a wonderful servant for the club. “You hate having these sorts of conversations around great players. You want to see a guy like Johnathan Thurston for example going out on top. “Darius has had a wonderful career, no question, but for Boyd to be able to play on in 2021, there has to be a radical improvement.”
Why would Boyd give up $1,600 000. Although I agree his last contract given to him by uncle Wayne was outrageous. I would be shopping out Jack Bird, his return on investment has been diabolical. We can ill afford to lose Katoni Staggs, or David Fifita two of the bright lights for Brisbane this season. Maybe Darius can be given a long term job at the Broncos on good money, the between his money and Birds this would free up some much needed funds to be wisely invested. The question still looms for the future, who is going to show some organisation and steer this potentially winning team around.

I really dont think it is. He just wouldnt get away with it. Thats not to say he doesnt have something going either subconsciously or if he just has some kind of mental block that makes him worry about getting hurt which makes things look bad for him ( and it does ) I think a lot of the time, as i keep saying, its more his capability to do things. He has lost a lot of agility and lateral movement imo. He only seems to move freely if he runs in straight lines, so if he gets targeted he is badly exposed.

I felt early on he may get back to himself, but as the year has gone on its clear he is done. He just isnt capable of playing at NRL level apart from maybe on the wing now. Somebody needs to make the call and just drop him and take it from there.

Well it seems Boyd himself has gone into full on PR mode today. Maybe he caught wind of what the club is planning.

or it may just be that he is the captain or the most prestigious rugby league club in the world and part of his job is PR ... it is not like he can just tell the media to **** off

We aren't prestigious anymore. He's on telly tonight, in a newspaper article today, and the missus is releasing crap of her own. For what reason I don't know, but he's in full-on PR mode right now.

Whilst there’s all these false ‘media reports’ and fabricated allegations about hubby being pushed into retirement by the Brisbane Broncos at season’s end, COMPLETE LIES yet again, (just to confirm for those who are questioning the matter). Love him or loathe him, he’s got two more years and he will be playing on next season no matter what your ‘unwarranted opinion’ is. It’s time for the media to find some new ‘clickbait’ and the trolls to back off. I will not condone nor understand, how unethical media practices can continue to surface and misrepresent individuals without consequence, it’s defamation. Meanwhile, we’re just over here, bursting with gratitude, focusing on what’s most important in life, our family unit. On Sunday, we celebrated the impending arrival of our second baby girl, we can’t wait for her to be earth-side, it’s such an exciting time in our household and we are so very blessed to have these moments override the nonsense. The biggest thank you to everybody who made Sunday so very special, and full of love!

....So if the rumors about Boyd getting pushed into retirement aren't true, why does the wife need to come out and say that and not the club or coach?

Have both parties not already said that? How many times do they need to say it?

Not sure what you are trying to get at really. Its not crime to put your family first, you pretty much acknowledged that, so now the stick you are trying to beat him with is the one about not fulfilling his contractual obligations. The recourse for the Broncos to deal with an underperforming employee is to drop him and maybe to tell him he wont be playing first grade. Thats about it really.

I can think of many things to have a pop at Darius about, this isnt one.

I cant see that being in a contract because its too subjective. He could have targets he had to achieve, but they could only be individual targets and again, they could also be too subjective if the Broncos tried to cancel his contract because of it. I'd say he may have some kind of wording that he has to do his job to the best of his ability, but if his ability is low what can you do?

How can you definitively prove he isn't doing his best? Maybe the level he is performing at now is the best he can do? Its not like he can be compared to the Darius Boyd of 3 or 4 years agon because he isnt the same player.

This to me is the whole crux of the Boyd situation. Seibold thinks we have nobody better. We have a coach who could drop him if he felt the team would be a better team.
I’m just annoyed he’s not retiring lol. Which is secondary to my annoyance that we are no chance of winning the Premiership, which I genuinely believe the Broncos should win each and every year....but let’s start with 1....is that asking too much??? 😩😩😩 I’m frustrated ok.

How can Boyd not read the online criticism....? like, I get you had mental health issues... but do you own a phone? Or a computer? Do you know what google is my brah? How do you watch Darren Lockyer (goat) highlights? Or porn?

not really ... many professional althletes don't read the media or what fans are saying about them ... if they did, they would be in an insane asylum before the end of their debut season

Disagree. Did you watch Souths vs Broncos last week? They all have active instagrams, they all know what’s being said.

Seriously would you read the stuff that gets posted on here? I'd say that BHQ is mild compared to some other sites but the arrogance of some of the vitriol towards Boyd is mind blowing. Fair enough if we want him gone but it can be voiced far better than it has been.
