But a lot of that is sort of backing up what I was trying to say, he's employed for short term success and winning ships, not to set the teams up for the future.

He got the job done at saints and got offered the money to go to Newcastle, Tinkler wanted to win at any cost so Bennett tried to do that in the most efficient way possible and got them to a prelim with if I remember correctly probably the worst team to ever play a prelim. He came back here and nearly got us there and despite us consistently being there or thereabouts got knifed while he wanted to stay here. He had a succession plan which was declined and we've since gone to kaka.

If souths go to shit, I think he'd be deserving of some ridicule because they have been planning for his departure. I expect they will decline due to a rookie coach and losing their captain and halfback, but I wouldn't think they'll miss the 8 or anything as drastic as we've seen previously when somebody else has taken over Waynes teams.

As I said that's their side of the story and the ongoing narrative they've been peddling since Bennett joined Newcastle.

If you ask the majority of Dragons fans what they think of Bennett the vast majority would be happy with him. There is a sentiment that he could have managed junior development better and annoited a better assistant coach than Steve Price but otherwise they were sick of constantly building and just wanted a premiership, they had been waiting since '76.

Then just about everything that could go wrong did at Newcastle. Going in the perception was that Wayne would sprinkle the magic dust and deliver another premiership. However Newcastle was a different animal and I don't think Wayne got a clear picture until 2013, at which point things went belly-up for Tinkler and the whole situation became a farce. I can understand the bitterness from Newcastle supporters because if Wayne cared about the club, he would have stuck around and honoured the final year of his deal and helped them get through that difficult period. However he had a clause, he took it and as he said 'sacked himself.'

Personally I think there's some valid criticism but when you're coaching you're never going to get it right 100% of the time. Especially when he cops the blame for things he didn't do (Pangai signed that deal when Seibs was the coach).

Apparently there was a slump and you poison the well with 'right as the Broncos were dealing with their slump' WB left. Inference? WB was abandoning us right when we needed him the most.

Apparently WB had agreed in principle to coach the Roosters in 2007 but decided to stay where he was after Politis couldn't keep his mouth shut.

Just like the whole baseball park figures discussion you appear to be missing the point. I'm not providing my opinion I'm relaying the opinion of those who criticise him for the way he leaves clubs. Of course it's skewed it's the critics connecting dots.

Really need to look at the various clubs perspective when Wayne arrives as opposed to when he leaves to get to get the true picture - I believe anyway.
Wayne came to the Broncos in 1988 and was handed virtually the Queensland side and although winning the first six in a row took four years to win our first flag.
Was intending to leave unannounced to go to the Roosters after Rick was dispatched, they having a team premiership ready but unable to achieve getting past the last hurdle. He reneged of course.
Went to St George likewise with a team ready and capable but also unable to get to the last level - Wayne got them there.
Newcastle totally different kettle of fish and he was there to snap up Tinklers offerings. Not one of his greatest achievements basically failed to achieve a premiership and left with his tail between his legs.
Griffin had the Broncs at the right end when he arrived back but after Anthony got the arse his added touch got us into the final.
Souths are now much the same - at the right end of the ledger with a great team but age is catching up with their coach and doubt they’ll finish the year with the big one.
Safe to say the cards have largely fallen his way throughout his career. Good on him but I have the view he should have been able to do much better with his earlier Bronco teams than he did - given the players he had and what the records will show.
Six premierships could have and should have been more.

I probably should read this, but I am typically not a fan of Autobiographies. Too self-indulgent, and while they can be introspective, naturally suffer from bias. Seem to be the influencers of the past were the ones writing autobiographies.

Looking at the reviews, the criticisms are basically what I have tried to express (an aloof man and unwilling to accept blame).

Is it any good?

Yes I quite enjoyed his books and still have them. Nobody cheered louder then myself when he returned to take over from Anthony and I made the trip to Sydney for that game in 2015.
Was so dismayed at the thrashings at home by Warriors and shortly after by St George - was at those games as well. Guess we all knew it was time for a new head coach afterwards. He also had a book Don’t let the music die in you or some such - he obviously isn't but sadly could be running out of new tunes.

It absolutely was a slump and it followed on from concerning slumps around and post origin the previous few seasons, which lead to Wayne sending them away for a break from football.

When they came back from the break he said they would be 3 or so weeks from their best and lo and behold they came back and 3-4 rounds later smacked a couple of teams to nil.

This, IMO, is the exact opposite of Wayne Bennett. To be clear at the start, I don't think he is infallible and I definitely think his ego has taken a hit by not being courted to come back and fix the Broncos, and the result is some immaturity in his recent comments.
But to say WB only cares about himself is flat out nonsense. Of course at times he will make a selfish decision, we all do, but a man who cares only about himself does this every decision, not just occasionally.
If there's one thing we know about Wayne, he cares very deeply about his players. Everyone knows he is an outstanding man manager and motivator. You look at a guy like Boyd who followed Wayne to the ends of the earth. A man who cares only for himself simply does not engender that kind of loyalty.

It was definitely fake news, but only adding to the deliberate misleading by the English is the historical confusion about his height being typically quoted in inches even though French inches were larger than current Imperial inches we have today.
