Broncoman's State of Origin thread of hope and despair

I want to share a funny Origin story and I think this is the best place to put it.

I was home-alone for the 3rd game of 2007 and to be funny I ran around the house naked everytime NSW scored a try. The Blues ended up winning that game 18-4 scoring 3 tries :takdir:

2007 was an interesting series. NSW had a commanding lead in game one before being run down. The second game was special as it marked the first time QLD won at the Olympic Stadium. Before that, the best we came away with was a draw and a few heart breaking 1 point defeats. Game 3 proved that there is no such thing as a dead rubber and the Blues deserved their win. The fact that there have only been 2 clean sweeps in 15 or so hears also proves it.

Any objections to moving this thread to the 2014 forum?

Oh god, on the last day of the year, that's the visual I'm going to get x_x, cheers Bman.

Now to return the favour...

07 is sort of underrated in my books, I think it's because there weren't too many highlight reels moments, but each match was like a sampler of what Origin was about.

Game 1: The typical Origin comeback.
Game 2: The tense grind-a-thon
Game 3: The dramatic injury riddled game

It's a shame Queensland didn't win Game 3 because it would have been apart of Origin folklore for years to come, much like Origin II 89. Still, I think the result was good in that it showed just how close the Blues were from winning it all.

Gaaaaaah the first image still pains me to the day. I turn of the TV or skip through it every-time I see it replayed.

It's strange what time has done to the 06 decider.

At the time, it seemed like even the majority of Blues fans could live with that given the standard of refeering. In hindsight, it's all just forgotten about and all that's remembered is 'that one pass'.

Still the sweetest Origin game of all time.

I agree, Big Pete. It's easy to focus on that one pass but it doesn't do the game justice. QLD had to overcome a 10 point deficit with a few minutes remaining. They showed a level of commitment, desire and intensity I'd never seen before to get the win and bring the shield home. It's what NSW don't understand. They keep telling themselves that falling short by a point or two over the last two years means that they're getting close, aren't far away, any day now etc.

It's all BS and it overlooks a few crucial things in the last few deciders. The main one being that after seven straight series wins QLD still showed more desperation than the Blues to get the win. It was a player with a Maroons jersey turning up making the tackle, diving on a lose ball, etc. It's a credit to Mal and the players that they have avoided complacency and still have the desire to win.

When the Blues have the ability to win a series by coming from two tries down with 10 to go then they might be a chance. . . but here's hoping they keep banging on about referees and whining about having two games in Sydney.

The Blues aren't far behind the Maroons and the series over the last few years have showed that, every since 2011 the Blues have been a lot more competitive and passionate. The difference is the halves imo the pairing of Cronk/Thurston is wonderful and can win you a game against anybody when NSW have halves that are very good at club level but can't take it to the next step.

The Blues have got out of jail a fair few times in Origin. The biggest comeback in Origin was that first game in 2005 where the Maroons lead 19-0 just after the break but NSW came back and snatched the lead with 10 to go but lost in extra-time. O'Connor's miracle kick in 91, in 2000 QLD lead at halftime in games 1 and 2 but NSW got out of jail thanks to luck in the first game and supreme skill in the 2nd, game 2 2011, Brett Kenny in 85, McGaw's hand of god in 87 game 1, hanging on in all 3 games in 86, game 2 1993 along with Mal's 2 stuff ups, Timmins field-goal etc.

Wow so funny I haven't heard something like that before

I have heard so many jokes like that over Queensland's run and they are getting extremely old by now.

It's Origin so the Blues are always going to be competitive. However, given the Blues have far more talent and far more resources to develop said talent, this run of eight from the Maroons is incredible.

There's a lot of reasons why the Blues haven't won in the past eight years, the halves are only one aspect of it.
