OPINION Broncos ‘Set to’ Win Cobbo's Signature. Badel warning.

What is frustrating is clubs are lining up for Cobbo, but Paps signs an extension with the storm for something like 700k without any fanfare in the media or a whisper of interest from other clubs etc.

Premiership winner, proven top 3 fullback, goal kicker, elite at field goals, but of course he extended with no competition and well below market rate.

The 900k is also followed up with "as part of plans to move him to fullback."
Thing is the only club at that isn't a basket case at the moment that doesn't have a topline fullback is the Cowboys. Panthers sure, but they haven't entered the race at all.

It'll be clubs like the Dragons, Tigers, Dolphins, Raiders, Bulldogs and Titans who would be offering stupid money for sure. Even though I can't see how the Titans could.

Money wise in terms of TPA's he could be earning a fortune in Qld alone.

It's come straight from Tas- his manager.

"I haven't had to pick up the phone, to create interest. All the calls are in bound and I've had 14 clubs contact me to express interest in wanting to sign Selwyn. The interest has come over the last three to six months.

"Some clubs have gone harder than others but the interest has really stepped up in the last two weeks."
What a source haha. Sure he's telling the truth and in no way, shaoe or form has an agenda or motive to drive up the feeling of demand for him....

I did however see a piece from Badel about clubs lining up for Campbell from the Titans, since they have Foran coming next year.

It was buried inside another article though hmmmm now that I think about it, I think it was buried inside one of the Cobbo's value articles

Exactly and this is what makes Journos such scumbags because they know that. It’s not like his manager is going to be like “Yeah we have had a few clubs interested and offering a bit more than the Broncos, but Pete don’t tell the Broncos that because I have been really trying to hype this up”.

That's not the issue though- you said it was made up without any quotes- it wasn't at all.

If it's not accurate it's on Taz not anyone else.

You always do this. PLEASE show me where I said it was made up without quotes???????? Bullshit can still come from a bullshit source

Badel's latest:
  • Cobbo " is poised to reject" rivals 900k offers
  • he will sacrifice more than 200k to stay loyal (no we know the reason for the increased figures in the reporting, lol)
  • A proposed four-year upgrade to be reduced by 12 months as his management seeks clarity on the contractual future of Brisbane coach Kevin Walters.
  • contract will be extended to the end of 2024 (which really only makes it a 12 month extension, not a 3 year extension as implied in the point above)

Cobbo’s manager Tas Bartlett says:

“We’re well advanced in negotiations with the Broncos, we are getting to the pointy end,” said Bartlett of PSM.

“Selwyn wants to stay a Bronco.

“He grew up following the Broncos, he is living his dream playing for the Broncos and they have done a lot of welfare work to help get Selwyn to this point.

“The Broncos are in pole position, Selwyn is enjoying playing under Kevvie.

“He wants to show a sense of loyalty to the club.”

Ben Ikin says:

“The challenge for us is to build a footy program that convinces guys like Selwyn Cobbo or Herbie Farnworth to stay,” Ikin said.

“If we do that, our best kids will find it very difficult to leave.

“We won’t be able to keep all our players all of the time, but I’m confident we have a work environment that people love being a part of.

“We would love to keep Selwyn. The good clubs in the marketplace have the ability to keep players and attract other quality players and that’s the benefit they get from the strength of the system they have got.”

The man himself says:

“I love the Broncos,” Cobbo said. “I grew up watching them and from a young age, I came through their system and through to the top grade.

“The Broncos have done so much for me and I want to perform for them.

“Hopefully we will be back up the top soon.”

Still thinking it will be between 5 n 6 and include 23 and 24 with a view to talking again middle of next year.

Perhaps even a PO for '25 to announce a 2 year extension.

I dont think realistically there is a club out there who will pay $900k for Cobbo currently despite his current form. ITs way too early in his career. I think the extension on our part is a smart move.

I reckon there are. I have no doubt whatsoever the Dogs would and if Munster re-signs with the Storm, I reckon the Dolphins will out of pure desperation.

Dolphins wont, not the way they work. People dont seem to get they wont panic.'They arent going to throw away the years of preperation to become an NRL club by panic buying in their first year.

It is extremely easy to market him as not a panic buy though. The kid looks potentially the best player of his generation, is extremely marketable, likeable and with obvious parallels to the likes of Inglis, has all the hallmarks of a franchise player.

I just dont see them blowing $900k on any player who isnt proven.

Obviously, I hope you are right because I want him at the Broncs forever but Bennett has shown a tendency to overspend on big name players and Cobbo has very wuickly become a big name player.

This lazy piece of shit journalism is what pisses fans off. So amateur. 14 clubs! Hahaha honestly. Even if every single club that has a bad fullback or centre (unlikely to pay a centre that much, especially when he's played less than 10 games there and his better games were on the wing, but let's EVEN leave that possibility open) were that desperate to get him it still only accounts for 8 clubs lol. That's being generous too! In this worst/best case scenario are 6 other clubs ALSO taking a punt and completely revolutionising their roster/spine?

Ffs, its so lazy and amateur. Sorry mchunt but journalism in this country is shockingly poor. It's like a gossip section of a high school newsletter in a poorly educated country

You always do this. PLEASE show me where I said it was made up without quotes???????? Bullshit can still come from a bullshit source

You were clearly talking about the way the article was written and questioning the figure of 14.

They got a quote from the player's manager and quoted him. That's not lazy or amateur- that's sports writing regarding contracts.

You didn't look any further than bagging the journalist for making things up but in this case you're wrong- they didn't make it up.
