Broncos 2020 Squad

Haas at lock will hurt us, not help us.

We need Lodge and Haas taking the first hit ups, that one two punch is quite effective in gaining momentum for the rest of the set. Move Haas to lock and that changes as lock forwards take hit ups later in the set which for the most part is nothing more than a settler.

Can we just not change our front row and keep it the way it is? Don't fix what isn't broken.
That's probably more reason to move him IMO.. if the 3rd is usually always a settler then having HAAS take it would evolve it into more than just a settler. It should be used as a 2nd phase or power run if we're to play the power forwards game plan.

Imagine Lodge 1st, Offs 2nd, Haas 3rd, TPJ or Fifita 4th. Play would surely be busted open by that point for backs like Staggs, Milford, Bird, Issako to play some footy.

If it hasn't been... You've got Croft there to put in the appropriate kick depending on our position on the field.

I’m certainly no historian or statistician, but I seem to recall the Tigers of ‘05 were pretty inexperienced.

Regardless, there is no doubt experience can help at times. But conversely, not all experience is necessarily good experience.
Exactly. And I think we have enough experience in our younger players and maturity in others to counter the actual "experience" tag.

Most of our players have been in and around rep teams now.

Milford, TPJ, Haas, Fifita, Glenn, Issako, Oates, Croft to a point..

They've all played with some very experienced and influential players now.

Even Turpin and Lodge show a lot of leadership and maturity for who they are and their age etc.

I think we have a squad that's very close with the right game plan and defensive structure.

I was just referencing the old slogan 👍
Oh! I remember F&W well but I oddly don't remember a slogan. However I do remember people(maybe Paul Hogan,Ted Bullpit) saying 'stick that in ya Funk and Wagnalls' back in the day.

It seems from reading some of these comments that people are possibly starting to try and overthink our pack.

Offa is a solid bench forward who hopefully can squash the dumb penalties and occasional dropped ball from his game. To win a premiership we don't need a whole team of side stepping, late offloading, tackle busting monsters.
We have those guys in the side already who will help to produce that spark.
Guys like Offa, Flegler, Kennedy, Glenn, Carrigan are the guys who you rely on to make solid tackles and make consistent hit ups each game.

Personally I think our pack should lineup like this.

8. Haas
9. Turpin
10. Lodge
11. Fifita
12. Glenn
13. Carrigan/TPJ
14. Paix
15. Flegler
16. Offa
17. TPJ/Carrigan

That will give us some serious go forward and plenty of defensive ability.
I personally like Glenn starting to give that leadership on the field, can easily play 60min and someone like TPJ could move to the edge for the last 20 with the rest of his time in the front row rotation.
Haas and Lodge are proven starting front rowers as shown last year.
Offa and Fleg are solid, no nonsense forwards off the bench.
TPJ gives us that impact and flexibility with injuries. I also like him coming into the front row with 20 to go in the half, he won't need to think as much and all he has to do is run and tackle hard for 40min a game.

Thats my opinion anyway.

Yep. Spot on. Having a few forwards who just defend well and make decent hit up is important.

TPJ in my opinion needs to work on his aggression as he comes in late wanting to hurt people which is dangerous and careless.

I would play TPJ like we used to play Tallis start him then give him a long break before bringing him back on

Yeah I think that would work better for sure. My biggest concern is when he comes on, he just thinks he needs to kill! He comes in late a lot and it cost us penalties and sometimes him on he sideline.

I've probably said this before with regards to TPJ's discipline but I really think calling it a problem is being too outcome oriented. Yes, he received eight weeks of suspension across three charges this year. But he could have easily walked away from the same three infringements without even a penalty against him. His shot on Cronk was less late than his shot on McGuire that didn't attract a penalty. His tackle on Sami was cleaner than Crocker's shot on Brett Stewart in the GF that was ruled legal and the Maloney tackle was just an absolutely horseshit call that should never satisfy the criteria for a crusher tackle. He was crucified for tackling backs as hard as he tackles forwards. Do you think Billy Slater or Thurston would have been penalised for any of those tackles?

I was thinking about that tackle around the time it happened. At the time it was largely applauded as a great hit and there were only a few fans who felt it was unfair. Could you imagine what the reaction would be had the tackle happened now? Not only would Crocker have been sent, but I could easily see Slater joining him and both facing lengthy suspensions.

Times have definitely changed since then.

Not for the better, in my opinion. In the years following, it's been nothing but media panic and kneejerk rule changes that have only made the game worse in the time since.

Nah because Billy wouldn’t have used his arms and probably would’ve karate kicked Maloney
