NEWS Broncos flyer Corey Oates says he wants to stay in Brisbane

I hope Bird doesn't prevent us from keeping him if it's only about the money.
Fair dinkum, it won't be Bird preventing anything and why one player is being constantly singled out is beyond me. Sims is off next year and the money saved, 200-300 k can be put into an Oates upgrade. Why not say it's the money we are allegedly giving Sean O'Sullivan to sign on that's going to cost us Oates ? We are also saving Thaiday's money and possibly a few others. If you want to blame someone blame the bloke from England who gave us even less than Bird, nevermind that both blokes had no influence on the circumstances.

I think people are more frustrated then anything.
Doesn't excuse stupidity and thoughtless diatribes against a guy who couldn't control things that were crippling him. If frustrated, work the heavy bag until the brain can function clearly.

Because you allocate a budget for the backs and a budget for forwards. Of course there's some give or take, but a high salary back like Bird is a bigger influence of re-signing Oates than a cheap forward like Sims.

I’m probably very ignorant, and never watch Sharks games if I can help it, but Bird never really stood out to me as anything special. Good player, sure, but great player? Eh ‍
Yet there were clubs who were prepared to pay even more than we did which you'd have to say is unusual behaviour for a player who is simply good. It's possible that they are all bad judges I suppose.

But but isn't Corey already drawing a salary and aren't we talking about the cheap dollars that Sims was earning ? After all it's only adding a couple extra hundred thousand to keep him and I'd doubt if there was separated budgets for forwards and backs, I'd think there was a budget and **** all else.

Not necessarily. How many players are on massive overs or get big money offered when they’re only average at best. Besides, my point was that I didn’t see why went after him at all, although his cost is definitely part of the question more than not

So how long has he been injured?

He started at five eighth in 2015, didn't light the house on fire and got moved to center.

Played reasonably but not fantastically (statistically vs other centres for 2016, didnt even come close the performances of Croker, Leilua or Fergs that year) - repped in Origin for a forgettable 5 games off the bench for no real impact and no points in 16/17. Scored 6 tries for the whole of 2016 up to and including the grand final with not overly great try assist stats and avg 15 tackles a game.

Played very averagely in 2017, scored 3 tries for the whole season with 7 try assists for the season. Got moved around to fullback and five-eighth trying to find somewhere to get him to fire, those moves did not go well.

Now I might be missing something here - but at least on paper, he is average at best. Watching him play a handful of times in 2016/2017 I saw nothing that was amazing, especially at Origin he was mr invisible.

Why does this guy's shit not stink to you guys? Seriously? What has he achieved that makes him so special to be on big dollars?

“Didnt light the house on fire” and played “reasonably” in 2015/16... agree or disagree about signing bird, dont make stuff up to suit your agenda... and his first 2 games at origin were great despite his limited game time. A hell of a lot more impact then peachey did for them in the exact same role. His last 3 he could only do so much in the circumstances and with tiny amounts of game time...

I've even heard Bird mentioned on NRL talk shows as the worst signing of 2018

It's an absolute disgrace

The bloke has been injured basically all year

Sure the Broncos have not got value for money this year, but it doesn't mean they won't next year

It's a damn shame, but 2018 is a write off with respect to Bird

Blokes get season ending injuries, it happens

Fully fit, full pre-season, and extended time in his position (whatever that is) in 2019 and then judge him

I suppose you could argue he was the worst in a value sense but what, that's not true is it ? I mean we got seven very average games from him but didn't we get zero from Savellio ?

I think every derogatory comment about Bird this year has been ill-founded and disgraceful given what we know and knew before we saw him play a game for us. True, we didn't know the severity of his sternum injury and perhaps a few of the early season comments could be excused but after learning the new information people should have been a hell of a lot more empathetic.

Sammy and Sims money has probably gone on keeping Haas.

Who's making things up? His 2015 year was a grand total of 8 tries, 7 try assists, 3 forced line dropouts and 6 line breaks, with 878 kick meters as five eighth... they are NOT GOOD stats for a player who played five eighth all year. 7 try assists is the most telling there....

In Origin, he has an awesome 0 tries, 0 try assists, 1 line break, 0 line break assists, 2 errors, 7 missed tackles from five games with limited play time (about 1.5x full game time across the 5 games). Again, nothing here that says "great" according to you.

In 2016 for the sharks has 6 tries and 6 try assists for the season - rest of the stats are average or below for a centre - again nothing to write home about.

In 2017 for the sharks he has 3 tries and a whopping 7 try assists.

Please show me the evidence for why this guy is so good - stats don't paint the whole picture, sure, but they are a crap load better than utter conjecture and the "leave brittany alone" type responses I have seen thus far.

Surely Savellio has been worse than anyone.
Difference is that he isn't taking up a large part of our cap, he definitely hasn't been the worst buy of the year as he is on a small pay packet...
Someone like Foran or Bird would be different
