Broncos Player Movement and Rumours 2020

I don't have an issue with blue chip signings. Earl was signed in his late 20s after serving his four year suspension. Before then he had scored 17 tries from 29 games at the Raiders and was the type of player Bellamy would back himself to get the best out of. With the squad in the shape, it was in, it was worth the invesment although it didn't work out because he required a knee reconstruction early on in the piece.

I have an issue with handing players a two-year deal after contributing to two of the worst seasons in club history.

So where do we find 36 new players? Make a hodge-podge team of everyone off contract for 2021?

You cannot say Kennar was on the wrong side of middle when it comes to positive and negative contribution, at least not this season

The Storm opted to re-sign Earl after the ACL injury.

A year after it occurred because he barely got to show what he was capable of and actually proved himself through the pre-season not before it. Kennar has had six years to show what he's capable of in good systems, it isn't much.

If the Broncos went ahead and signed Sandor Earl I probably would have a similar reaction. The only difference is that he didn't play a part in this and show how ordinary he was both for the Broncos feeder club and on the field.

However it's not the same scenario. Sandor Earl was something of a cheap mystery box, we know what they're getting out of Kennar.

under that theory, you'd have an issue with us handing Staggs or Dearden a 2 year deal

Sure if you ignore context and everything else I wrote about in this thread about upside.

The Broncos already have 24 players under contract (not including Kennar), they also likely already have 4 on development deals (Cobbo, Williamson, Piakura, Walsh) that gives them an entire pre-season to work out 5 spots.

It could be even less now with rumours that the salary cap has been cut, so we could see squads of 25.

I agree with what your saying, Pete regarding not burning contract spots but surely we are releasing a few players this off season. Surely.

Maybe Kevvie really is going to purge and is re-signing a few cheapies so we don’t have a shortage? I dunno.

Never thought there'd be so much uproar over a minimum wage contract, especially when we have no official word from anyone regarding contract length / team options.

I guess this is the state that the Broncos are in, even things like this are triggering fans.

Big Pete just fucked up on this one. Hard for his fan boys to accept and BP is now a bit stuck. His argument is pure drivel and most of us can see Kennar as very reasonable money spent. BP has painted himself into a corner with his ridiculous initial assertion and now there's no way out without losing some credibility. He could save a little face by simply saying ' I've had a bit of time to think about it and listened to some good arguments and I've reconsidered my view '.

Yeah nah tugger, this ain't it. You may well wish to reconsider this one yourself.

With another injury toll like last year, if they cut the squads to 25 we'll be lucky to send out a Nines team most weeks.

Rumour is Kyle Flanagan could be shopped around at Roosters for next year. Maybe so they can make a play for Dearden?
They already tried that and failed. I don’t think Dearden will leave.
Walker will come in and wouldn’t be surprised if they sign Benji on min contract. They also have Lam sitting there.

For all we know, the 2nd year could be a team option..
It would certainly be the first time the club ha managed to get one of those sort of agreements in recent years, so that does seem incredibly unlikely

People jumping up and down about @Big Pete but seem to be mostly missing the point. Kennar getting a one year extension isn't a huge issue. In fact, you could without too much trouble actually argue that it was pretty justified, especially with what else was available for 2021.

The issue is when we're offering these sort of guys two year deals with no real justification for it. He's been decent, but a long way short of great, but most importantly, he simply isn't in demand out in the marketplace, so forgetting everything else, there is just no good business reason to make it a two year deal in this case.

We just MIGHT do well out of having him locked in for a second year, but frankly, the only person who is absolutely assured of doing well out of this is Kennar himself and his Manager. The most likely scenario though is he ends up getting paid for the next two years to mostly turn out in the Queensland Cup.

Walker was going to replace him, there was a week he was named in the squad and then he was going to play the next week but while he hasn't played in 12 months he's lost too much weight and Robinson scrapped the idea.

Well that's kind of the role of all depth players. If you can avoid using them you can say you've probably had a good season. If you have to use them, you jusy want someone fairly reliable to come in. In a perfect world you obviously want star players as depth but the salary cap and the lack of talent league-wide won't allow it.

Flanagan was signed for $30,000 (special allowance by nrl) but it goes upto $2 million next year (only if released, NRL allowed it) so they are signing dearden as back up for dce who is back up for walker.

If they're honestly just an emergency option to be only used for depth then it really only reiterates the pointlessness of making that a two year deal when it could comfortably have just been one.

Our cap isn't as bad as some may have us believe. Now we have DBs 600k, Kahu's 350/400 and 1.8 million in 12 months with Milford and Bird gone not forgetting we don't have to find 800k for Fifita! I'd say our cap is very healthy.
Milfords not going anywhere.
